Use a PDF editor’s dedicated redaction tool, apply the redactions, and review hidden information before signing an invoice you plan to send. A black rectangle drawn over text can hide it visually without removing the underlying content.
Why a black box may not protect invoice text
A drawn shape or annotation can cover text on the page while leaving the original text in the PDF. Depending on how the file was edited and saved, a recipient may still be able to select or copy the covered text, or inspect other content in the document. A visible cover is not proof of secure removal.

Adobe distinguishes a redaction from a visual cover: its redaction feature removes selected visible text or graphics and then displays a mark over the removed area. See Adobe’s explanation of redacting and sanitizing PDFs.

Redaction and sanitization remove different things
Redaction targets content visible on the page, such as an account identifier or personal contact detail. Sanitization targets hidden information, which may include metadata, comments, embedded content, scripts, or hidden layers. One does not automatically mean the other has been addressed; review the editor’s options and decide whether hidden information also needs removal.

Sanitizing can affect document features beyond the visible invoice. Adobe notes that redaction or hidden-information removal may remove digital signatures and review, fill, or signing features. The exact effects depend on the document and workflow; do not assume every PDF will behave identically. See Adobe’s redaction guidance.
How to prepare an invoice PDF for signing
- Keep an untouched original. Work on a separate copy stored appropriately for the sensitivity of the invoice. This gives you a reference if you need to correct the edited copy.
- Open the copy in a PDF editor with a dedicated redact function. Mark only the fields you genuinely need to withhold, such as an account identifier or personal contact information. Adobe’s documented workflow supports selecting text or images and describes search-based redaction in its related guidance.
- Apply the marked redactions. Pending marks are not the same as completed removal. Use the editor’s apply command; Adobe describes applying the marks before saving the resulting document.
- Review hidden-information removal. Choose whether to sanitize metadata and other hidden content, considering that this can affect signatures and document features.
- Save a separate final copy, reopen it, and inspect it. Check that the redacted areas look right and use the available reader tools to check whether the removed text remains searchable or extractable. This is a practical check, not a certification that every possible hidden-data issue has been eliminated.
- Sign the finalized copy. Redact and clean up the version intended for release before signing it. Do not redact an already signed copy and assume the original signature remains valid.

What signing changes
Signing should come after the content is finalized. Adobe warns that redaction-related removal can remove digital signatures and certain review, fill, and signing features. The cited guidance does not establish signature rules for every certificate, platform, or jurisdiction, so check the requirements that apply to your signing process rather than relying on a signed file surviving later edits.
What a successful redaction check can—and cannot—show
Reopening the file and trying to select, search for, or extract the removed text can catch an obvious failure, but those checks are not a guarantee against every implementation flaw. A paper titled “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction” raises a caution about possible leakage through glyph positions in tools it examined. The search listing alone does not establish whether any current version remains affected, so it is not evidence that all current redaction tools leak data. Treat the final-file review as an important safeguard, not a substitute for using actual redaction and hidden-data controls.
