The Bundeswehr adopted the rifle in 1959 and began replacing it in the 1990s, but a military’s move to a newer rifle does not establish when a manufacturer stopped making the older one. In fact, a 2002 Small Arms Survey report still listed Germany among the countries producing G3 rifles.
Why there is no definitive end date
Three different events are often blurred together: a military adopting a rifle, replacing it in service, and a manufacturer ending production. The dates available for the G3 document the first two more clearly than the third. Neither the Bundeswehr’s adoption nor its later replacement activity proves when H&K’s German factory stopped producing the rifle.

Heckler & Koch’s company-history page provides context for the G36’s military use but does not state when G3 production ended. The best-detailed production snapshot in the sources here is the Small Arms Survey’s 2002 report, which lists Germany among countries then producing the G3. That establishes production was reported at that time; it does not give a later German factory closure date.
G3 production and service timeline
| Date | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 1959 | The Bundeswehr adopted the G3, according to the Small Arms Survey 2002 and the G3 overview. | It is not a production start or end date. |
| 1969 | Rheinmetall gave up its German production rights, according to American Rifleman’s historical account. | It does not show when H&K later ceased manufacturing the G3. |
| 1990s | The Bundeswehr began replacing the G3, as summarized in the G3 overview. | Military replacement is not proof that German factory production stopped then. |
| 1999 | H&K’s company history places German army units using the G36 in Kosovo. | G36 use in Kosovo does not establish that all G3 production ended in 1999. |
| 2002 | The Small Arms Survey reported Germany among ten countries producing the G3 in its period snapshot. | The snapshot does not identify when German production subsequently stopped. |
What the 2002 production figures mean
The Small Arms Survey reported at least seven million G3 rifles produced worldwide and licensed production in at least 15 countries. Those are figures published in 2002, not updated totals. Its country snapshot named Iran, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Myanmar, Pakistan, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UK as producing the weapon at that time.

The report’s use of “currently” refers to its own 2002 publication period, not to present-day production. It is evidence that production, including German production, continued well beyond the Bundeswehr’s 1959 adoption; it is not evidence of a current 2026 production status or a final production year for H&K.
German manufacture is not the same as licensed production
H&K’s German production history should be kept separate from G3s made under license elsewhere. Rheinmetall’s 1969 withdrawal of its production rights left H&K as the sole holder among the original German production-rights partners, according to American Rifleman’s account. Separately, the Small Arms Survey documented licensed production in multiple countries and listed ten countries in its 2002 snapshot.

A foreign licensee’s production date would not by itself tell us when H&K stopped manufacturing in Germany. Nor does the historical survey establish which licensees, if any, continue production today; current production status across those manufacturers is not verified by these sources.
