Red Dot vs. Holographic Sight: Which Is Better for an AR-15?

Neither optic type is best for every AR-15. Compare the exact models by reticle, battery conditions, mount, height and weight.

Neither a red dot nor a holographic sight is automatically better for an AR-15. A reflex red dot is a strong choice if you want a simple aiming dot and value the long battery-life specifications offered by some models. A holographic sight may suit you better if you prefer a ring-and-dot reticle. Compare specific models—not category labels—on reticle, battery conditions, weight, controls, rail fit, sight height and cost.

What is the difference?

“Red dot” is a broad retail term. The cited Aimpoint examples are LED reflex or collimator sights; EOTECH describes its HWS (Holographic Weapon Sight) technology as transmission holography. The operating principles differ, but that distinction alone does not establish which sight is faster, more accurate or more durable in use.

For an AR-15 buyer, the practical difference to start with is often the reticle: a single dot on the cited Aimpoint Duty RDS, versus a ring surrounding a center dot on the cited EOTECH EXPS models. Other reticles and specifications depend on the model.

How the cited models compare

Factor Aimpoint reflex examples EOTECH holographic examples What to check
Operating principle Aimpoint identifies the Duty RDS as an LED reflex collimator sight. EOTECH identifies its HWS optics as transmission holography. Treat this as a technical distinction, not proof of practical superiority.
Reticle Duty RDS: 2 MOA dot. EXPS2 and EXPS3 manuals describe a 68 MOA ring around a 1 MOA center dot; other patterns are model dependent. Choose between a single dot and a ring with additional aiming references, then confirm the exact model’s reticle.
Published battery life Duty RDS: 30,000 hours at daylight setting 6, 15,000 lux and room temperature. 518 manual: 2,500 continuous hours with lithium batteries or 2,200 with alkaline batteries at nominal setting 12 and room temperature. These are specifications for different products under different settings and, for the 518, battery chemistries. They are not a controlled category-level comparison.
Mounting and height The cited Duty RDS configuration has a Picatinny mount and a 39 mm optical axis. Aimpoint PRO includes a QRP2 mount and a standard AR-15 spacer. The cited HWS manual specifies a Weaver or MIL-STD-1913 rail interface. Confirm the selected SKU’s rail interface, included mount, clearance and optical-axis height.
Weight Duty RDS: 110 g sight only; 160 g with its included mount. The cited manuals list 13.8 oz for the 518 and 11.5 oz for the 552. Compare like with like: sight-only figures against sight-only, and mounted configurations against mounted configurations.
Water rating Duty RDS: Aimpoint lists submersion to 25 m. The cited 518 manual lists water resistance to 10 ft; the cited 552 manual lists 33 ft. These are model-specific ratings, not guarantees for every sight in either category.

Which reticle should you choose?

Choose a single dot if you prefer a simpler aiming reference

The cited Duty RDS uses a 2 MOA dot. If that is the style you want, use it as a starting point for comparing other reflex models, but check each model’s own reticle specification rather than assuming all red dots use the same dot size.

Vortex Strikefire II Red Dot Sight - 4 MOA Red/Green Dot
  • The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
  • Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
  • The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
  • An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
  • With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery

Choose a ring-and-dot if you want additional visual references

The cited EXPS2 and EXPS3 manuals describe a 68 MOA ring around a 1 MOA center dot. That gives the reticle a different layout from a lone dot; whether you prefer it is a matter of fit and preference, not evidence that it is universally more effective. EOTECH’s EXPS3 manual calls its holographic technology advantageous over typical red dots, but that is a manufacturer claim, not independent comparative proof.

How to interpret battery-life claims

Battery-life figures are meaningful only with their conditions attached. Aimpoint’s current Duty RDS specification gives 30,000 hours at daylight setting 6, 15,000 lux and room temperature. The EOTECH 518 manual gives 2,500 continuous hours with lithium batteries or 2,200 with alkaline batteries at nominal setting 12 and room temperature. Because these are different models, brightness settings and, for the EOTECH, battery types, the figures do not establish a general battery-life winner between reflex and holographic sights.

Check fit, height and total weight

Do not assume that every optic described as suitable for an AR-15 includes the mount or height you need. The cited Duty RDS configuration has a Picatinny mount and a 39 mm optical axis, while Aimpoint PRO includes a QRP2 mount and standard AR-15 spacer. The cited EOTECH HWS manual lists a Weaver or MIL-STD-1913 interface. Verify the selected configuration’s rail compatibility and whether its mount or spacer is included.

Weight also depends on model and what is counted. Aimpoint lists the Duty RDS at 110 g without its mount and 160 g with the included mount. EOTECH’s cited manuals list 13.8 oz for the 518 and 11.5 oz for the 552. Those figures are not a clean category comparison: they refer to different models, and the available figures do not establish identical weighing configurations.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you

The cited manufacturer pages and manuals establish specifications for particular models. They do not provide an independent, controlled head-to-head test establishing that one category is universally faster, more accurate or more durable. Water-resistance figures likewise apply to named models, not all reflex or holographic sights.

  • What is the sight’s weight with the mount you will use?
  • Does the rail interface match, and is the mount included?
  • Is the optical-axis height appropriate for your setup?
  • Does the model’s price fit your budget?

How to make the choice

  1. Pick your reticle preference. Start with whether you want a single dot or a ring-and-dot; compare the reticle specifications of the exact models under consideration.
  2. Compare battery claims on equal terms. Record battery chemistry, brightness setting, test conditions and whether runtime is continuous. Do not compare headline hours without those qualifications.
  3. Verify the complete mounting setup. Check the rail standard, included mount or spacer, optical-axis height and clearance for the particular SKU.
  4. Compare mounted weight and controls. Use figures that count the same components, and make sure the brightness controls suit how you intend to operate the sight.
  5. Choose by the trade-offs you value. Favor a reflex model if its reticle and model-specific specifications suit you; favor a holographic model if you prefer its reticle and configuration. Neither label alone is a reliable verdict.
