Mount an AR-15 red dot only after making the rifle safe, checking that the optic and mount fit the rail, and following the manuals for the exact models you own. To zero it, choose a distance suited to your rifle, ammunition and intended use, fire a group from a stable rest, adjust the sight according to its markings, then fire a confirming group.
Make the rifle safe before mounting or adjusting the sight
Follow the rifle manual and range rules. Point the rifle in a safe direction, remove or empty the magazine, open the action and verify that the chamber is empty before handling the mount or optic. Leupold gives those steps in its Freedom Red Dot Sight manual. Aimpoint’s official zeroing guide states: “Remember to always treat your firearm as if it were loaded.” Do live-fire zeroing only at an appropriate range or safe shooting area.

Check compatibility and choose a useful rail position
Identify the exact optic, its mount, the rail interface and the required fasteners before installation. AR platforms commonly use Picatinny rail, and many red dots include a compatible mount or offer one separately, as Leupold explains in its red-dot sighting guide. Do not assume that different sights share the same footprint, mount or screws.

Position the sight where you can comfortably see the dot and operate the controls, while leaving room for any iron sights, lights or other equipment. Eye relief and the arrangement of accessories affect practical placement; use the optic and mount instructions to determine what positions are permitted.
#1 Best Overall
- The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
- Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
- The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
- An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
- With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery
Install using the instructions for your specific mount
- Confirm that the optic is seated correctly and that the fasteners are the ones specified for that optic and mount.
- Follow the mount maker’s installation sequence and torque specification, using an appropriate inch-pound torque tool if the instructions call for one.
- Check that the mount is secure and that the optic has not shifted as you tighten it.
Torque values are model-specific. For example, the Leupold Freedom RDS manual says to push its included mount forward against the rail and torque the keeper screws to 65 in-lb. That value applies to the specified Leupold configuration, not to other optics, mounts or fasteners. The manual directs users with other mounting options to follow the instructions supplied with those mounts.
Choose a zero distance for your setup and intended use
There is no single distance that suits every AR-15 red-dot setup. Meprolight lists 25, 36, 50 and 100 yards as common choices and notes that barrel length, ammunition, optic height and intended use matter. Leupold describes 50 yards as a choice that may bring the trajectory near the point of aim again around 200 yards, while a 25-yard zero can make close-range mechanical offset easier to manage. These are conditional examples, not guaranteed trajectory results for every rifle and load.

| Zero choice | What the cited guidance says | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 25 yards | Meprolight lists it as a common distance; Leupold notes a closer zero can reduce mechanical-offset concerns. | Useful when you can confirm at that distance and want to account for close-range offset. Confirm impacts at the distances relevant to your use. |
| 36 yards | Meprolight lists it as a common AR-15 red-dot zero distance. | Its suitability depends on ammunition, barrel configuration, optic height and intended use; the cited guidance does not establish a universal trajectory outcome. |
| 50 yards | Meprolight lists it as common; Leupold says it may intersect the trajectory near 200 yards. | Treat the farther-distance relationship as approximate and setup-dependent, not as a guarantee for every load. |
| 100 yards | Meprolight lists it as a common choice. | Choose it if it fits the distances and conditions you intend to confirm; the cited guidance does not prescribe it as best for all users. |
Before firing, decide where you will zero and record the ammunition and distance. A different load or configuration can change where the group lands. Use the sight’s manual for its adjustment scale and click value rather than assuming another optic’s settings apply.

Fire a group, adjust point of impact and confirm
- At a safe range, set a target at your chosen zero distance and rest the rifle securely.
- Center the dot on the intended point of aim and fire the group size specified by your sight maker. Aimpoint’s method begins at 25 meters with its target and instructs users to compare point of impact with the desired impact.
- Estimate the center of the group rather than reacting to a single shot. Adjust windage and elevation using the sight’s own markings, adjustment directions and click value.
- Fire another group from the same distance and rest. Repeat the measured adjustment process as needed, then fire a final group to confirm the zero.
Leupold’s Freedom RDS manual specifies a three-shot group and 1/4 MOA per click for that model. Those details are not universal. Aimpoint’s guide uses its own target and sight-specific adjustment guidance, so follow the instructions for the optic you have rather than transferring click values between models. Aimpoint provides its zeroing guidance and the step-by-step method.

- [ 2 Height Mount Options ] Offers two height options (Low and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness), lending its functionality on any platform.
Why a red dot may not hold zero
If groups shift unexpectedly after a zero is established, inspect the setup before making more adjustments. Meprolight’s FAQ identifies loose mounting screws, mount movement, incorrect screws, poor optic seating and changes to the firearm-and-ammunition combination as possible causes.
