Yes—Red Dead Redemption 2 can run on a Windows PC that meets Rockstar’s published minimum requirements, but those requirements do not promise a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate. Rockstar’s support page, last updated April 30, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit, 8GB of memory, a GTX 770/Radeon R9 280-class graphics card, and 150GB of storage as the minimum. Its recommended tier raises the target to 12GB of memory, a GTX 1060/Radeon RX 480-class card, and an i7-4770K/Ryzen 5 1500X-class processor. Treat these as compatibility baselines rather than a guarantee of 60 frames per second.
This guide shows how to compare your own PC with those specifications, what 8GB of RAM really means, which information the official list does not provide, and how to troubleshoot Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT graphics-initialization error.

What are the official Red Dead Redemption 2 PC requirements?
Rockstar Games Customer Support lists two hardware tiers for the Windows PC version. The article was last updated April 30, 2024, and applies to the global English support listing. The table below reproduces the stated requirements.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8GB RAM | 12GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 with 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4GB |
| Storage | 150GB HDD | 150GB HDD |
These are Rockstar’s published examples, not a current graphics-card buying guide. The list does not attach a resolution, quality preset, or FPS target to either tier. In particular, “recommended” does not mean that every system with a GTX 1060 or RX 480 will deliver 60 FPS at 1080p.

Rockstar warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements over time. It also notes that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics processors, and AGP cards may be incompatible, and that unlisted configurations may not be supported. A laptop with a similar-sounding model number therefore needs to be checked more carefully than the name alone suggests.
Can my PC run Red Dead Redemption 2?
Start with the four objective checks below. They tell you whether your configuration reaches Rockstar’s listed baseline, but they cannot predict a specific frame rate without a reproducible test for your exact hardware, game version, resolution, and settings.
1. Check the graphics card and VRAM
Compare your discrete GPU with the minimum examples: GTX 770 with 2GB or Radeon R9 280 with 3GB. For the recommended tier, compare with a GTX 1060 6GB or Radeon RX 480 4GB. The model and video-memory capacity both matter. An integrated GPU or a mobile chipset is not automatically equivalent to the desktop card bearing a similar name, and Rockstar specifically cautions that some such hardware may be incompatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On Windows, open Settings > System > About to identify the computer, then use Task Manager > Performance > GPU or the graphics driver’s control panel to verify the exact GPU and dedicated memory. If more than one GPU is shown, note which one the game is configured to use; a laptop can otherwise launch on an integrated adapter instead of its discrete card.
2. Check the processor
The minimum processor examples are an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300. The recommended examples are an Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. These names identify the performance class Rockstar used when writing the requirements; they do not establish that every newer or older chip will behave identically.
Find the exact processor under Settings > System > About or in Task Manager > Performance > CPU. Avoid judging by clock speed alone. The game’s CPU load can vary with the scene, simulation activity, and background tasks, so a processor that clears the model comparison may still need a lower frame-rate target or reduced settings.

- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
3. Check system memory
Eight gigabytes is Rockstar’s minimum and 12GB is its recommended figure. Installed capacity is not the same as free capacity: Windows, launchers, browsers, recording software, and other applications consume memory before the game starts. Close unnecessary programs and check Task Manager > Performance > Memory to see how much is available.
4. Check free storage
Reserve at least 150GB of free space for the installation. Rockstar lists a 150GB HDD for both tiers; it does not require an SSD and does not claim that an SSD increases FPS. An SSD is an optional storage choice that may improve general loading responsiveness, but the official requirement is capacity, not drive type. Leave additional free space for Windows updates, shader or settings files, and other applications rather than filling a drive to its last gigabyte.
Does the recommended specification mean 60 FPS?
No. Rockstar’s requirements page gives no frame-rate, resolution, or preset commitment. A system at the recommended tier may be suitable for a different experience from another system at the same named tier because cooling, driver versions, laptop power limits, memory configuration, background software, and in-game settings all affect performance.
Use the requirements as a pass/fail starting point:
- Below minimum: compatibility is uncertain, and Rockstar does not promise support for the unlisted configuration.
- At minimum: the hardware matches the publisher’s baseline, but the requirements do not say what resolution, preset, or FPS to expect.
- At recommended: the hardware matches Rockstar’s higher baseline; this still is not a 60-FPS or 1080p guarantee.
- Above recommended: extra capability gives you more room to adjust image quality or resolution, but a particular result still requires testing on your system.
Before deciding whether a PC is adequate, define the goal you actually care about. “Can it launch?” is a compatibility question. “Can it hold a smooth 60 FPS at a chosen resolution?” is a performance question that the official table alone cannot answer.
How to compare two PCs for RDR2
When choosing between two computers, compare the same five axes rather than focusing on a single GPU label.

| Comparison axis | What to record | What Rockstar’s list establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU | Exact model and dedicated VRAM | Minimum and recommended example cards | A current ranking or guaranteed FPS |
| CPU | Exact desktop or laptop processor | Minimum and recommended example processors | Performance in every scene or frame-time consistency |
| Memory | Installed RAM and available RAM | 8GB minimum; 12GB recommended | Whether background programs will leave enough free memory |
| Storage | Free capacity and drive type | 150GB capacity listed for both tiers | An SSD requirement or an FPS benefit |
| Target | Resolution, quality preset, and desired FPS | Nothing beyond the hardware baselines | A performance prediction |
If two systems both clear the official requirements, the better choice depends on the fifth row: your target resolution, visual quality, and frame rate. Without an independent benchmark that specifies the GPU, CPU, game build, settings, resolution, and test scene, a precise FPS number would be guesswork.
Can I run RDR2 with 8GB RAM?
Eight gigabytes meets Rockstar’s stated minimum, so a PC with 8GB is not automatically disqualified. It does, however, leave less headroom than the 12GB recommended figure. Windows and other running applications can consume part of the installed memory, increasing the chance of stutter, slow transitions, or instability when the system is under pressure.
Make an 8GB system as predictable as possible
- Restart the PC before launching the game to clear accumulated background usage.
- Close browsers, game overlays, recording tools, launchers, and other applications you do not need.
- Open Task Manager > Performance > Memory and confirm that a reasonable amount remains available before starting.
- Use the game’s graphics settings conservatively if the system becomes unstable; change one option at a time and note the original value.
- If problems persist, compare the system with the 12GB recommended memory tier rather than assuming the graphics card alone is responsible.
Adding memory can reduce pressure on an 8GB system, but the official page does not quantify an FPS gain from a particular upgrade. Capacity also cannot compensate for a GPU or processor that falls below the minimum.
Installation, account, and software requirements
Hardware is only one part of starting the game. Rockstar says installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account login and an internet connection. The connection is also used for activation and periodic entitlement verification, so a first launch should not be planned as an entirely offline process.
The support article lists several software components that may be installed or required:
- Rockstar Games platform
- DirectX
- Chromium
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package
Allow these components to install when prompted and keep the launcher updated. If a managed, work, school, or unusually restricted Windows installation blocks one of them, resolve that restriction before diagnosing graphics performance.

How do I fix ERR_GFX_INIT?
ERR_GFX_INIT, commonly shown with “Failed to initialize graphics device,” means the game could not initialize its graphics device. Rockstar’s support guidance, last updated June 12, 2024, gives three relevant remedies: update graphics drivers, reset the Red Dead Redemption 2 settings files, or change the graphics API in system.xml. Perform the steps in order and change one thing at a time so you know which action helped.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 1: Update the graphics driver
- Close Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Close the Rockstar Games launcher as well; do not leave it running in the notification area.
- Install the latest graphics driver available for your exact NVIDIA or AMD adapter from its official driver channel.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again and check whether the error is gone.
Use the driver for the actual GPU in the computer, particularly on a laptop with both integrated and discrete adapters. Rockstar’s guidance calls for current drivers; it does not recommend a third-party driver utility.
Step 2: Reset the game’s settings files
Rockstar instructs you to close both the game and launcher before resetting settings. The default settings directory is:
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings
- Exit the game and the launcher completely.
- Open the folder above in File Explorer.
- Back up the folder or copy it elsewhere so you can restore files if necessary.
- Reset the settings files as directed by Rockstar’s support procedure.
- Start the game and allow it to recreate clean settings.
Do not delete system.xml as part of this step when following Rockstar’s cited reset procedure. Keeping a backup preserves your original configuration and makes the change reversible.
Step 3: Switch between Vulkan and DirectX 12
If updating the driver and resetting settings does not resolve the error, change the graphics API in the Advanced Graphics section of system.xml. The file is in the same settings directory:
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settingssystem.xml
- Close the game and Rockstar Games launcher.
- Make a backup copy of
system.xml. - Open the original file with a text editor.
- Find the graphics API value in the Advanced Graphics settings.
- Change Vulkan to DirectX 12, or DirectX 12 to Vulkan.
- Save the file and launch the game.
- If the error remains, restore the backup or try the other API once, rather than changing several settings at the same time.
Rockstar presents API switching as a possible remedy, not as a universal performance winner. Vulkan is not guaranteed to be faster than DirectX 12, and DirectX 12 is not guaranteed to be more stable on every GPU and Windows configuration.

Step 4: Remove only the shader-cache files Rockstar identifies
After changing the API, Rockstar instructs users to delete files beginning with sga_ if they are present in the settings directory. Leave unrelated files alone, then launch the game so it can rebuild what it needs.
If the error returns after a driver update or API change, revert the last change using your backup and repeat the process methodically. A record of the original API and settings prevents an unsuccessful experiment from becoming a permanent configuration problem.

Rockstar’s original 2019 PC announcement advertised HDR, high-end displays at 4K and beyond, multi-monitor and widescreen configurations, and faster frame rates. Those statements describe features promoted for the PC release; they are not a contemporary performance guarantee for a particular graphics card.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To use one of those display modes, the monitor, cable, Windows display configuration, and GPU output must all support it. Higher resolution and multi-monitor rendering also increase the workload, so the existence of a feature does not mean that a system at the minimum or recommended tier will drive it at a chosen frame rate.
Storage choices: HDD versus SSD
Rockstar lists a 150GB HDD for both minimum and recommended configurations. An HDD therefore satisfies the published requirement. An SSD is optional: it can make general file access and loading feel more responsive, but Rockstar does not state that installing the game on an SSD raises FPS or changes the official hardware tier.
Whichever drive you choose, check the available capacity rather than the drive’s advertised size. Windows reports usable free space after formatting, and the game’s installation, updates, temporary files, and other applications all compete for that space. A nearly full system drive can create separate Windows problems even when the game itself technically fits.
Requirements can change after installation
Rockstar’s requirements page includes this warning: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” That is why a PC that matched the list at launch should still be kept updated and checked if a later update introduces startup or graphics problems.

A practical decision checklist
- Confirm Windows 10 64-bit or a supported newer Windows configuration before purchase or installation.
- Record the exact CPU model, GPU model, and dedicated VRAM.
- Compare the GPU and CPU with Rockstar’s minimum and recommended examples.
- Verify at least 8GB of installed RAM, with 12GB as the recommended tier.
- Free at least 150GB of storage; an SSD is optional rather than required.
- Plan for a Rockstar Games account, internet activation, online play, and periodic entitlement checks.
- Allow the Rockstar platform, DirectX, Chromium, and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package to install when required.
- Define your resolution, graphics-quality, and FPS goal separately from the compatibility check.
- If
ERR_GFX_INITappears, update the driver, reset settings carefully, then try the Vulkan/DirectX 12 switch. - Back up
system.xml, change one setting at a time, and delete onlysga_-prefixed files after an API change if they are present.
The bottom line for your PC
Meeting Rockstar’s minimum specification means your PC reaches the publisher’s stated entry baseline; meeting the recommended specification means it reaches the higher baseline. Neither tier specifies a guaranteed FPS, resolution, or preset. The most reliable answer for your particular computer therefore combines the five hardware checks with your target display settings and a controlled test on that system. For startup failures, Rockstar’s documented path is current graphics drivers, a careful settings reset, and an optional switch between Vulkan and DirectX 12.
