Both PS5 and Xbox Series X run Red Dead Redemption 2 at a reported 30 frames per second through backward compatibility. The cited comparison reports a higher resolution mode on Series X, while finding PS5 frame pacing steadier. Neither console has a native current-generation version of RDR2 in the sources cited here.
How RDR2 runs on each console
These are the PS4 and Xbox One releases running on newer hardware, not separate PS5 and Xbox Series X editions. Rockstar said the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 would be playable on the new consoles through backward compatibility. The PlayStation Store listing identifies the game as a PS4 version, marks it PS4 Pro Enhanced, and says it is playable on PS5.

Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement covers the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Its RDR2 Title Update 1.25 notes list PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia rather than PS5 or Xbox Series editions; the notes page was last updated January 9, 2025. This describes the release lineage, not a guarantee that a future update cannot arrive.

| Comparison point | PS5 (PS4 Pro version) | Xbox Series X (Xbox One X version) |
|---|---|---|
| Reported frame rate | 30 fps | 30 fps |
| Reported resolution mode | Up to 1920×2160 pixels with checkerboard rendering | 3840×2160 pixels |
| Frame pacing observation | The comparison described performance as holding a steady 30 fps | The comparison noted slight frame-pacing irregularities |
In practical terms, the comparison’s reported resolution favors Series X, while its frame-pacing observation favors PS5. Frame pacing describes how consistently frames are delivered; it is distinct from the 30 fps cap. A 30 fps cap does not by itself mean that every frame arrives at an even interval.
Which version should you choose?
If resolution is your priority, the cited comparison reports the higher output mode on Series X. If you value the comparison’s observed frame consistency, it found PS5 steadier. Both versions remain capped at a reported 30 fps, so neither is the choice for playing RDR2 at 60 fps.

When buying, check the edition name: the PlayStation listing is for the PS4 version, and the compatible Xbox release is the Xbox One version. Those editions run on PS5 and Series X through backward compatibility, respectively.
Do not confuse RDR2 with Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar’s 2025 announcement of a PS5 and Xbox Series release with 60 fps, HDR, enhanced image quality, and resolutions up to 4K refers to the original Red Dead Redemption, not Red Dead Redemption 2. That announcement is not evidence of a comparable current-generation upgrade for RDR2.
