Yes—Nintendo 3DS and 2DS family systems play most Nintendo DS and DSi game cards. The main exception is software that needs the DS’s Game Boy Advance (GBA, also called AGB) slot or an accessory inserted into it. DS and DSi games run in 2D on these systems; they do not gain stereoscopic 3D. Nintendo’s support pages describe compatibility as “most” or “almost all,” not universal.
Which DS games work on a 3DS or 2DS?
Nintendo says most DS and DSi games can be played on 3DS-family systems, including 2DS models. Its US support page describes all DS games as compatible except a few that require the AGB slot; Nintendo UK uses the more qualified wording “most” and “almost all.” These are qualitative descriptions, not a published compatibility percentage. Nintendo’s US compatibility guidance, Nintendo UK’s 3DS guidance, and the Nintendo 2DS product page all describe this backward compatibility.

Why some DS games do not work
Games that need the GBA slot
The original DS and DS Lite have a slot for Game Boy Advance Game Paks. 3DS and 2DS systems do not. A DS game that requires a GBA cartridge or an accessory plugged into that slot cannot use the missing hardware. Nintendo identifies this as the key exception to DS-game compatibility.

Games that start but lose a GBA-dependent feature
Not every game that interacts with a GBA cartridge necessarily fails to start; a feature that depends on the cartridge may instead be unavailable. Nintendo’s DSi compatibility guidance names Guitar Hero On Tour and Guitar Hero Decades as unplayable on DSi, and notes that some other games lose features. That DSi list is not a complete compatibility ruling for every 3DS or 2DS model, so check the requirements of the particular title rather than assuming every exception behaves the same way. Nintendo’s DSi compatibility information gives examples of slot-related limitations.
DS and DSi games do not use 3D
Nintendo states: “Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will not display in 3D.” The games remain 2D even when played on a 3DS system; the 3DS’s stereoscopic 3D slider does not add a 3D mode to them. Nintendo Support’s compatibility page explains this limitation.
Choose expanded or original-resolution display
On 3DS-family systems, DS and DSi software is expanded to fill more of the screen by default. Nintendo’s manual describes a way to display the game at its original resolution instead. This changes how the image is displayed; it does not make an incompatible cartridge work.

- Choose OPEN while continuing to hold the button as the game starts.

Region and imported game cards
Check the exact game’s format and region before buying an import. Nintendo says 3DS-family systems are region locked, and its UK support page cautions that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL 3DS. That guidance is not a basis for assuming that every older DS card is universally region locked: distinguish the card’s format and the console’s region, then check the specific title. Wireless features while playing DS software
Nintendo’s 3DS manual says the HOME Menu, StreetPass, and SpotPass cannot be used while DS or DSi software is running. Nintendo also says wireless-enabled DS games can connect with players using DS, DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS systems. That is a statement about system compatibility, not confirmation that a particular game’s historical online service or servers are still operating. What to check if a DS game will not play
- Confirm the format: make sure it is a DS or DSi card, not a 3DS card.
- Look for a GBA requirement: check the game packaging or instructions for a GBA Game Pak or accessory that uses the DS’s AGB slot.
- Check the title’s specific limitations: some GBA-dependent features may be missing even when the game itself starts.
- Verify region details: identify the card’s region and whether it is a DS or DSi title before ruling out a regional restriction.
- Separate display from compatibility: try the original-resolution launch option if the image looks different, but do not expect it to fix a card that relies on missing hardware.
Nintendo’s documentation establishes the user-facing compatibility and caveats; it does not, in the sources cited here, specify the internal chipset, firmware mode, or execution method used to run DS software. It is therefore more precise to describe the supported results than to label the method as emulation or attribute it to a particular processor.
