Choose the PC edition if you want control over resolution, HDR, ultrawide or multi-monitor layouts, graphics settings and potential for higher frame rates—and your computer is powerful enough to deliver them. Choose PS5 if you already own the console and want the least complicated setup. The important qualification is that Rockstar’s documented PS5 option is the PS4 edition running through PS5 backward compatibility, not a separately established native PS5 edition. Official sources reviewed through October 13, 2026, do not publish a model-specific resolution or frame-rate specification for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5.
What you are actually buying on PS5
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a PS4 game that Rockstar announced as playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. That distinction matters when you compare it with PC. You should not describe the PS5 purchase as a confirmed native PS5 release unless a later official announcement establishes one.

Disc ownership
A PS4 disc can be used on a PS5 that has a disc drive. It cannot be used on the PS5 Digital Edition because that console has no optical drive. The disc remains the license and must normally be present when you launch the game, just as with other disc-based backward-compatible titles.

If you own the digital PS4 edition, access it from the PlayStation account that purchased it. Open your game library on the PS5, find Red Dead Redemption 2, and install the available PS4 version. Do not assume that a digital PS4 entitlement automatically represents a separate native-PS5 product.

Feature and performance limits
The PlayStation product information warns that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5. The official material reviewed does not provide a current, model-by-model table for resolution, frame rate, HDR behavior or visual modes on PS5. Consequently, a claim such as “the PS5 version runs at 4K/60” is not established by these sources and should not guide your purchase.
For a console owner, the practical benefit is predictability: install the PS4 edition, use the DualSense-compatible PS5 environment, and play without choosing dozens of rendering options. You trade away the ability to target a specific PC-style resolution or frame-rate mode.
What the PC edition adds
Display flexibility
Rockstar’s PC announcement lists HDR, 4K resolution and beyond, widescreen configurations, multi-monitor setups and faster frame rates. These are capabilities of the PC edition, not guarantees for every computer. The graphics card, processor, memory, cooling, display and in-game settings determine what your system can actually render.
A 21:9 ultrawide monitor, a two- or three-screen desktop, or a high-resolution monitor is therefore a meaningful reason to choose PC. The console route is tied to the output and modes supported by the PS5 backward-compatible version, while PC lets you match the game to the display you already use.
Settings and benchmarking
Rockstar’s support guidance recommends using the game’s quality slider, changing individual advanced graphics settings and running the built-in benchmark. The slider adjusts background parameters according to your system capability, resolution and preference for image quality or performance. The benchmark gives you a repeatable way to check whether a change improves the balance you want instead of relying on a single busy scene.
This flexibility is useful but adds responsibility. Two PCs with the same graphics card can produce different results because of processor speed, memory configuration, drivers, thermal limits and resolution. A feature list cannot promise a universal frame rate.

Launcher and account requirements
The PC listing requires Rockstar Games Launcher and a Social Club account for installation and activation. Internet access is required for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. Those requirements are part of the ownership experience even if you intend to spend most of your time in Story Mode.

Choose PS5 when convenience matters most
You already own a PS5
If the console is already connected to your television and your PS4 entitlement is available, PS5 is the low-friction option. There is no graphics menu to balance, no launcher installation to maintain and no need to test several hardware profiles before playing. The decision is especially simple when you are comfortable with the PS4 edition being delivered through backward compatibility.
You play from the couch or share the television
A console fits a living-room setup without moving a tower PC, routing a long display cable or configuring multiple input devices. This is not a claim that PS5 has a particular visual advantage; it is a setup and usage advantage. If your priority is sitting down and continuing a save with minimal configuration, the console route aligns with that priority.
You have a PS4 disc and the right PS5 model
Check the hardware before buying or keeping a used copy. A PS4 disc is useful only with a PS5 that includes a disc drive. On a PS5 Digital Edition, choose a digital entitlement instead; the physical copy cannot be converted into a disc-free license by the backward-compatibility announcement.
You do not want to troubleshoot PC performance
PC graphics options are valuable only if you want to manage them. If adjusting resolution, image-quality settings, drivers and benchmark results sounds like work rather than a benefit, PS5 avoids that layer. You still need to accept that the official sources do not establish a specific PS5 resolution or frame-rate target.

You want ultrawide, multiple monitors or very high resolution
These are explicit PC features in Rockstar’s announcement. A widescreen or multi-monitor setup can show more of your desktop environment, while 4K-and-beyond output lets a high-resolution display operate closer to its native mode. The result remains dependent on the computer’s graphics headroom and the settings you select.

You prefer a higher frame-rate target
Rockstar lists faster frame rates as a PC capability, so PC is the only choice in this comparison that gives you a documented path to tune toward a higher target. “Higher” is relative to the hardware and settings; it is not a promise of 120 frames per second, 144 frames per second or any other universal number. Use the benchmark to see what your machine sustains in the scenes the game stresses.
You enjoy tuning image quality
The quality slider provides a quick starting point, while advanced settings let you trade visual detail for performance in a controlled way. This is useful if you are willing to make one change at a time, measure the result and keep a profile that suits your display. It also lets you lower demanding settings when a new monitor or higher resolution exposes a performance limit.
You already have a capable gaming PC
PC is easier to recommend when the computer is already built for modern 3D games. The Rockstar Store listing checked October 13, 2026, shows a graphics requirement of a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of memory or a Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB. The listing excerpt does not establish that these figures are a complete current minimum or recommended specification, and requirements can change, so verify the live store page before purchasing or upgrading.

PC requirements and setup checklist
Use this process before you commit to the PC edition:
- Check the current store listing. Confirm the latest operating-system, processor, memory, storage and graphics requirements. The GTX 1060 6 GB and RX 480 4 GB figures are the graphics examples shown in the listing reviewed on October 13, 2026, not a complete performance guarantee.
- Confirm your display target. Decide whether you are aiming for standard widescreen, ultrawide, multiple monitors, 4K or a different resolution. A higher target increases the rendering workload.
- Install Rockstar Games Launcher. The PC edition uses the launcher for installation and activation.
- Sign in to or create the required Social Club account. The account is part of entitlement management and online services.
- Provide internet access for activation. The store also states that internet is needed for online play and periodic entitlement verification, so do not assume a permanently disconnected installation.
- Install the game and update it. Allow the launcher to complete its files and any available updates before judging performance.
- Run the built-in benchmark before fine-tuning. Record the result at your intended resolution, then adjust settings and test again.
How to tune the PC version without guessing
- Start with the quality slider. Choose whether your priority is image quality or performance. Let the game establish a baseline rather than immediately changing every advanced option.
- Set the output resolution to match your goal. If performance is below your target, test a lower resolution before making many unrelated changes. This makes the effect easier to understand.
- Run the benchmark. Use the same benchmark after each meaningful change. Note average behavior and any obvious dips or stutter instead of judging only the opening seconds.
- Open advanced graphics settings. Change one demanding setting at a time, run the benchmark again and keep the change only if the visual trade-off is worthwhile.
- Choose a stable compromise. A slightly lower image-quality setting that remains smooth is generally more useful than a maximum preset that repeatedly falls below your preferred performance.
- Re-test after hardware, driver or display changes. A new monitor resolution or graphics driver can alter the balance, so retain a known-good profile and compare against it.
This method follows Rockstar’s documented advice: the slider is a starting point, advanced options provide finer control and the benchmark confirms the result for your particular system.

Buying specifically for a PS5
Label the purchase accurately as the PS4 edition playable on PS5. Confirm whether you are buying a disc or digital copy and match it to your console model. Do not pay a premium based on the assumption that the package represents a separate native PS5 edition; the sources reviewed do not establish one.
Already owning both platforms
Use the display and convenience test. Select PS5 for a living-room session with no tuning, and select PC when you want a particular resolution, ultrawide or multi-monitor output, HDR configuration or frame-rate target. Your existing hardware and licenses matter more than a generic “best version” label.
Choosing between a PC upgrade and the console
Do not buy a new graphics card solely because the PC announcement lists advanced features. First compare the current store requirements with your computer, then decide whether the cost and time of upgrading are justified by the display and performance control you actually want. If your computer meets the requirements but cannot sustain your preferred resolution, the console may be the simpler purchase; if you already have the hardware, PC may provide the extra flexibility at no new platform cost.
Performance claims you should treat carefully
No confirmed PS5 number in the cited material
The official sources reviewed do not publish a current PS5 table with exact Red Dead Redemption 2 frame rates and resolutions by console model. Avoid articles, listings or forum comments that turn an unverified figure into a guarantee. The safe comparison is PC adjustability versus PS5 simplicity.
Do not confuse the original game with the sequel
Rockstar support notes updated March 3, 2026, describe a 60 FPS option for Red Dead Redemption, the original game, through PS5 backward compatibility. That update is not evidence of a 60 FPS update for Red Dead Redemption 2. The titles are related but technically distinct, so the original game’s patch cannot establish sequel performance.
Do not treat PC features as measured results
HDR, 4K-and-beyond output, widescreen, multi-monitor support and faster frame rates describe what the edition can support. They do not prove that every PC reaches a given frame rate at a given resolution. Hardware capability, settings and the benchmark result are the relevant evidence for your machine.

- Pick PS5 if you already own the console, have the digital PS4 license or a compatible disc, play mainly on a television and want minimal setup.
- Pick PC if you own a capable system and care about graphics tuning, high-resolution output, ultrawide or multi-monitor layouts, HDR configuration or the possibility of higher frame rates.
- Verify before buying if you are relying on a PS4 disc, using a PS5 Digital Edition, or shopping for PC hardware. The disc-drive requirement and current PC requirements affect whether the product you purchase will work as intended.
- Keep expectations precise: PS5 is the PS4 edition through backward compatibility in the documented route, while PC offers adjustable capabilities whose final results depend on your hardware and settings.
Bottom line
There is no single winner for every player. PS5 is the sensible choice for an existing console owner who values a straightforward, couch-friendly experience and accepts the PS4 backward-compatible edition. PC is the better fit for players who want to control resolution and image quality, use ultrawide or multiple displays, or pursue higher frame rates with hardware that can support those goals. Choose according to the experience you want to configure—not an unsupported promise of a particular PS5 frame rate.
