Why temperature and storage conditions matter
Most power banks use lithium-ion cells. Heat accelerates battery degradation and can increase the risk of an internal failure; physical damage, moisture, short circuits, and unsuitable charging conditions add further hazards. Cold weather presents a different problem: a cell may deliver less power and may be outside the safe charging range specified by its maker.

Choose the storage location first
Use a cool, dry indoor place
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says to “store the power bank in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.” A cupboard in a dry room is usually better than a windowsill, enclosed porch, attic, shed, or garage that becomes very hot or damp. Keep the bank away from radiators, stoves, heating vents, and other heat sources. The ACCC’s Power banks guide provides the consumer-safety advice.
Never use a parked vehicle as storage
Do not leave a power bank in a parked car, even if the outside air feels mild. A closed passenger compartment can heat rapidly in sunlight, and a bank left in a glove box, center console, or trunk may remain hot long after the vehicle is parked. The ACCC and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) both specifically warn against hot cars and direct sunlight.
Keep it dry and physically protected
Store the bank where it will not be crushed, dropped, soaked, or exposed to loose metal objects such as keys, coins, tools, or jewelry. Metal contacting both terminals can create a short circuit. Do not put a power bank loose in a bag with those items.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStoring a power bank in hot weather
Bring it indoors before the heat builds
If a power bank has been in a backpack, car, tent, or sunlit room, move it to a shaded indoor location. Shade reduces direct solar heating but does not guarantee a safe internal temperature; an enclosed vehicle can stay dangerously hot without visible sunlight on the device.
Let a hot bank cool before charging
The ACCC advises letting a power bank cool after use before recharging. Disconnect it from a phone or charger, place it on a dry, nonflammable surface away from combustible materials, and allow it to return naturally to the range in the product instructions. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer, and do not use ice packs, water, or a hair dryer to force the temperature down. Sudden temperature changes can create condensation or damage the enclosure.

Watch for abnormal heat or behavior
A bank that becomes unusually hot while idle, swells, smells chemical, leaks, hisses, or vents gas is not a normal “hot-weather” issue. Stop using and charging it immediately. If it is safe to do so without touching a damaged area, move people and flammable items away and follow the manufacturer’s emergency guidance. Do not open the casing or attempt a cell repair.
Storing and using a power bank in cold weather
Do not invent a universal minimum temperature
General sources do not establish one cold-storage cutoff for every power bank. The product manual may distinguish among storage, operation, and charging, and those ranges can differ. Check the model’s documentation before leaving it in an unheated room, vehicle, or outdoor pack.
Warm it naturally before use or charging
When a bank has become very cold, bring it indoors and let it reach the temperature specified by the manufacturer before connecting a phone or charger. Keep it disconnected while it acclimates. Never apply direct heat from a radiator, heating pad, oven, hot-water bottle, or hair dryer. If moisture has condensed on the case, do not connect it until the exterior is completely dry.
Charging below freezing can be unsafe
The USFA’s general lithium-ion guidance says not to charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C). This is broad public-safety guidance, not a replacement for a model manual. Some manufacturers publish a narrower charging range; use the narrower, model-specific instruction when it differs.
Temperature ranges from published guidance
The figures below illustrate why the manual for your particular power bank takes priority. They are not a universal specification.

| Source and scope | Published guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Fire Administration, citing NFPA, general battery safety | Store lithium-ion batteries at room temperature when possible; do not charge below 0°C (32°F) or above 40°C (105°F). | Use as general safety guidance. The USFA page was reviewed November 7, 2024. |
| Anker Power Bank Safety Guide | Operating and storage temperature: 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). | This is Anker’s published range for the products covered by that guide, not every power bank. |
| Anker Portable Charger Maintenance Guide, March 15, 2022 | Optimized operating temperature: 0°C to 25°C; avoid hot or humid storage. | The narrower “optimized” range shows that one manufacturer can publish more than one temperature recommendation for different purposes. |
Read the label, manual, or support page supplied with your model and identify whether a stated range covers storage, operation, charging, or all three. Do not combine numbers from different manufacturers to create a new limit.
Long-term storage: charge level and maintenance
Follow the maker’s charge recommendation
For storage over several weeks or months, check the instructions for the recommended state of charge. Anker’s Power Bank Safety Guide recommends about 60% charge for long-term storage. That percentage is Anker’s advice for the products covered by its guide, not a rule for all brands or models.
Set a periodic inspection reminder
The same Anker guide recommends recharging every three months during long-term storage. If your manufacturer gives a different interval, use that interval instead. At each check, inspect the case for cracks, swelling, leakage, corrosion, or other changes; confirm that the storage area is still cool and dry; and verify that no metal objects have been placed against the terminals.
Do not store a questionable unit
Do not put a power bank into long-term storage if it is already damaged, unusually hot, swollen, leaking, or showing erratic behavior. Isolate the issue by stopping use and contacting the manufacturer or an appropriate hazardous-waste authority for instructions.
Using a protective pouch correctly
A sleeve or protective pouch can prevent drops, keep the bank separate from keys and coins, and reduce abrasion while travelling. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lists a case, sleeve, original retail packaging, tape over terminals, or a snug plastic bag as ways to protect spare battery terminals from short circuits. Its PackSafe lithium-battery guidance concerns air travel and spare batteries.

A pouch is not thermal insulation. It will not make a power bank safe in a hot car, stop heat accumulating in direct sun, or replace the temperature limits in the manual. Use a pouch for physical separation and protection, while keeping the bank in a suitable environment.
Air travel and seasonal packing
The FAA states: “Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, including power banks and cell phone battery charging cases, must be carried in carry-on baggage only.” Before flying, check the current airline and destination rules as well as the FAA requirements. Keep the terminals protected, place the bank where cabin crew can access it, and do not pack it in checked luggage when it is a spare battery.
For a winter or summer trip, pack the bank in your carry-on rather than leaving it in a checked bag exposed to uncontrolled temperatures. Once you arrive, do not leave the carry-on in a parked vehicle; take the power bank indoors with you.
When to stop using a power bank
Warning signs
- Swelling, bulging, cracks, or a case that no longer closes normally.
- Liquid leakage, a chemical odor, hissing, smoke, or gas venting.
- Heat that is excessive or continues while the bank is idle.
- Visible burn marks, melted plastic, or damage after a drop, crush, or puncture.
- Abnormal charging, repeated shutdowns, or other behavior that begins after physical or heat exposure.
Unplug the bank and stop using it when any of these signs appear. Do not press on a swollen case, puncture it, open it, or keep testing it with another device. Follow the maker’s instructions for isolation and return, and ask your local hazardous-waste authority whether it accepts the specific battery. Acceptance and drop-off procedures vary by location.

Why checking matters
On September 17, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to stop using specified Hererod jump starters and power banks. The notice reported 16 fires, including seven reports of property damage, and estimated about 12,500 units. Those figures describe the products in that warning only. Read the CPSC Hererod warning for the affected models and instructions.
A separate CPSC recall dated November 13, 2025, covered specified Belkin portable power banks and wireless charging stands. The record estimated about 83,500 units in the United States and about 2,385 sold in Canada. Those numbers concern that named recall, not the power-bank market generally. See the CPSC recall notice to determine whether a particular unit is included.
A practical hot-and-cold storage routine
- Identify the model. Record the model number and locate the manufacturer’s manual or support page. Note separate storage, operating, and charging limits.
- Pick the location. Use a dry indoor place out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Do not use a parked vehicle, attic, shed, or other location that routinely exceeds the model’s limits.
- Prepare the bank. Disconnect cables, remove it from damp or overheated gear, and inspect the case. Do not store a unit that is damaged, swollen, leaking, or abnormally hot.
- Adjust for weather. After hot exposure, let the bank cool naturally before charging. After cold exposure, let it warm naturally to the manufacturer’s stated range. Keep it disconnected during acclimation.
- Protect the terminals. Use a sleeve, case, or other snug protection that separates the bank from metal objects. Remember that this protects against physical short circuits, not temperature extremes.
- Schedule long-term checks. Apply the maker’s charge-level and inspection interval. Anker’s published example is about 60% charge with a recharge every three months; another model may specify something else.
- Recheck before use. Look for swelling, leakage, cracks, unusual odor, or heat. If anything is abnormal, do not charge or test the device; use official support or disposal guidance.
Common situations and the safe response
“The bank was in my car for an hour.”
Take it indoors and leave it disconnected on a dry, safe surface. Do not charge it while it is still hot. If the case is swollen, leaking, damaged, or continues heating, stop using it and seek disposal instructions rather than trying to recover it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The bank will not charge after a cold night.”
Do not force charging while it is cold. Let it return naturally to the charging range in the manual, keep it dry, and then inspect it. If it remains abnormal, contact the manufacturer. Do not use direct heat.
“I need to store it until my next trip.”
Use the manufacturer’s long-term storage charge and maintenance instructions, place it in a cool, dry indoor location, protect the terminals, and set a calendar reminder for the specified inspection or recharge interval.
“Can a pouch solve the temperature problem?”
No. A pouch helps prevent drops and terminal contact with metal. It does not cool a bank in sunlight or warm one in freezing conditions.
