Recovery Mode on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac: What to Know

Recovery mode provides repair and reset tools, but the steps differ across iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac. Learn how to enter each environment and avoid data-erasing options.

Recovery mode is a built-in environment for repairing, updating, restoring, or resetting a device when its usual operating system is not working normally. The name covers different tools on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac, so the steps—and the risks—depend on your device and the option you choose.

What recovery mode does—and what it does not mean

Recovery mode starts a device in a maintenance environment instead of its normal operating system. Depending on the platform, it can provide options such as repairing startup problems, reinstalling software, or resetting the device.

Entering recovery mode does not, by itself, erase your files. Choosing an option such as Restore, Wipe data/factory reset, or an erase/reset tool may. Read the confirmation screen and understand the selected action before proceeding.

Recovery mode is not interchangeable with Safe Mode, Fastboot, DFU mode, BIOS/UEFI, or firmware recovery. Those are separate startup or maintenance functions.

iRecovery Stick - iPhone Recovery Stick for Data Extraction Tool
  • The iRecovery Stick extracts messages, call history, contacts, web history, calendar appointments, photos, voice memos, email accounts, and map history directly from iPhone and iPad devices. Running entirely from the USB stick with no software installed on the device or computer, it leaves no trace that an extraction was performed.
  • Uncover images concealed using photo-hiding apps and use the iSearch keyword function to search for specific words, names, phone numbers, or symbols across the entire device at once, eliminating the need to manually browse through individual apps and folders. Bookmark important findings and export content for reporting and analysis.
  • The iRecovery Stick processes phone backup files stored on your Windows PC or copied from a Mac computer. If a device was backed up to a computer before items were deleted, those items may still be recoverable from the backup. Photos sent in text message conversations but deleted from the photo library may also be recovered if the conversation was not deleted.
  • The iRecovery Stick requires physical access to the target device. The user must be able to disable the passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID before extraction begins. If the device was previously backed up to a computer using a password, that password will also be required to process the backup data.
  • Use the iRecovery Stick on as many iPhone and iPad devices as needed with no per-device fees. Free lifetime updates ensure ongoing compatibility with future iOS versions, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.

iPhone: connect to a computer to update or restore

Enter recovery mode

  1. Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC with a compatible USB cable that supports data. Check that the cable and computer ports fit your devices.
  2. Open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on a PC, and leave the iPhone connected.
  3. Use the button sequence for your iPhone generation:
    • iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Hold the Side button until the Connect to computer screen appears.
    • iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Top or Side button and Volume Down together until the Connect to computer screen appears.
    • iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold the Home button and the Top or Side button together until the Connect to computer screen appears.

Choose an option

When the computer offers Update or Restore, Apple advises trying Update first if you have not already tried it. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone’s data.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the Connect to computer screen. Let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode entry steps. If the iPhone cannot be updated or restored, or a required button does not work, Apple says service may be needed.

Android: follow the instructions for your manufacturer and model

Enter recovery mode

There is no single button sequence that applies to every Android phone. Check the phone manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that a sequence for one brand—or for a Google Pixel—will work on another device.

On a Google Pixel, the documented manual route goes through Fastboot: select Recovery Mode, then open the Android Recovery menu. The button combination used to reach Fastboot varies across Pixel generations, so use the instructions for your Pixel model.

Use the menu carefully

Opening Android Recovery is different from choosing Wipe data/factory reset. Google says a factory reset erases data. Before confirming one, check whether your important data is backed up and whether you know the account credentials needed to set up the phone again. Google also recommends charging the phone and maintaining network access for setup after a reset.

All three tools work on Windows XP or newer with no additional software required.

  • The Digital Investigation Kit includes everything needed to begin an investigation immediately — a Data Cable Kit with iPhone, USB-C, and Micro USB cables, a universal SIM Card Adapter compatible with all SIM card sizes, and a Softshell Compartmentalized Protection Case to organize and transport all eight tools securely.

Exit recovery mode

If the menu offers a reboot or restart option, use it to leave recovery. If it does not, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions instead of guessing at a button combination; there is no universal Android exit procedure established for all manufacturers.

Windows: open Windows Recovery Environment

Enter Windows RE

Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) is a built-in collection of tools for diagnosing and recovering from Windows startup problems. Microsoft documents these access routes for Windows 10 and Windows 11:

  • Auto Detection: The engineering repair box automatically identifies whether the connected device is for iPhone or for , switching to the correct mode with zero manual input.
  • No Disassembly Required: The no disassembly required design means repair professionals never need to open the device housing to perform mode switching or forced restarts.
  • Portable Build: Lightweight and pocket-sized, this portable repair box weighs less than a coin, making it easy to carry in any tool kit for on-site repairs.
  • Dual Compatibility: Features a dual head Type-C design that supports for iPhone, for iPad, and for devices all in one compact unit.
  • One-Click Entry: This DFU mode tool lets technicians enter DFU or recovery mode instantly without pressing any physical buttons, saving time during repairs.
  • From Settings: Go to System > Recovery > Advanced startup, then select Restart now.
  • From the power menu: Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  • After repeated startup failures: Windows may enter Automatic Repair. Microsoft documents interrupting startup twice so Windows RE may appear on the third start.
  • From recovery or installation media: A recovery drive, repair disc, or Windows installation media can provide another route. Some manufacturers also provide a recovery button.

Choose a repair or recovery tool

Windows RE is a set of options, not one operation. A repair tool, restore option, and PC reset can have different effects. Reset is available from Windows or Windows RE; check the choices and data consequences shown on your PC before confirming it.

Exit Windows RE

Select Continue to Windows when it is available, or use the on-screen restart or power option appropriate to the menu. If the PC keeps returning to Windows RE, it is still experiencing a startup problem and needs troubleshooting.

Mac: enter macOS Recovery based on the processor

Identify your Mac and start Recovery

Check About This Mac to identify whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor; the startup method differs.

  • Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, select Options, then select Continue.
  • Intel: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears.

Use the recovery utilities

macOS Recovery can include utilities such as Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall macOS, and Disk Utility. Reinstalling macOS is distinct from erasing the startup disk. Erasing and reinstalling can delete user accounts, network settings, files, and folders, so back up files before erasing. Reinstalling may require an internet connection.

Exit macOS Recovery

Choose Restart or Shut Down from the Apple menu.

Which recovery environment should you use?

Use the environment and instructions for your specific platform, model, and goal. Apple’s iPhone recovery workflow uses a connected computer; Android button paths depend on the manufacturer; Windows RE has several entry routes; and Mac startup depends on whether the computer uses Apple silicon or Intel. These differences are why a procedure for one device should not be applied to another.
