In his article about building JustUser, Boran Tunç describes a native C++17 command-line utility that sends requests to online platforms and checks whether a username appears to exist there. The article reports coverage of more than 45 platforms and identifies libcurl as the networking library.

The small-binary premise is part of the project’s appeal: the author reports an executable of approximately 473 KB, under 500 KB. That number is not accompanied in the available account by the operating system, processor architecture, compiler version, build flags, or linking and packaging details. It should therefore be read as the author’s result for a particular build, not a size readers can expect on every machine.

A checker generally makes a request associated with a username and interprets the response. The important complication is that there is no single response convention shared by every website. A platform may signal an existing account through an HTTP status, text in the response, or a redirect; another may handle unknown usernames differently. The documentation for a separate username-checker project describes these different detection strategies, but it does not establish which strategy JustUser uses for every site.

One endpoint, one documented contract
GitHub’s official Get a user API documentation takes a username as a path parameter and documents responses including 200 OK and 404 Not Found. Those meanings apply to that documented endpoint. They should not be assumed to describe the behavior of unrelated websites or even every way a platform exposes account information.
Why results can be uncertain
A result is an observation about how a particular endpoint responded at the time of the check. It is not a universal reservation or registration check. A site can change its page or response behavior, block automated requests, or return an error that does not clearly mean either “username exists” or “username is free.” If a result matters, verify it on the platform itself, especially before making account, branding, or availability decisions.

What the reported size does—and does not—show
An approximately 473 KB binary is a useful indication of the scale the author reports for this build. Without build conditions, it cannot establish that the executable is portable across operating systems, has no runtime dependencies, uses little memory, or is faster than another checker. The article’s size claim is not an independently reproduced measurement.
Likewise, the reported 45-plus platform coverage is a project claim, not a measure of how reliably each platform can be checked. Coverage and confidence are different: a checker may have a definition for many sites while each definition still depends on a site-specific response pattern that can change.

Extending the platform list
The article says JustUser’s site definitions can be extended through sites.json. This offers a configuration-based route to adding or adapting platform entries, rather than requiring the supported list to remain fixed. The article extract does not specify the file’s schema or the exact fields required for an entry, so it would be unsafe to invent a sample configuration.
For any added site, the key implementation question is how the checker distinguishes a real account response from an unavailable, blocked, redirected, or otherwise ambiguous response. A definition that only recognizes one expected status or message may become inaccurate when the platform changes its behavior. The separate username-checker repository documentation illustrates status-code, message-comparison, and redirect-based approaches; it is a different project, not documentation of JustUser’s exact detection rules.
