Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To record an external HDMI source on a computer, connect it through a compatible HDMI capture device, then add that device to OBS as a Video Capture Device. This works for unprotected content you are authorized to record; HDCP-protected video generally will not appear in the capture. [OBS Project]
What you need to record HDMI output
- An HDMI source, such as a game console, with content you are authorized to record.
- A compatible HDMI capture device, usually a USB capture card for an external computer setup.
- A computer running OBS and a supported connection for the capture device.
- HDMI cables, plus any device-specific drivers or firmware required by its manufacturer.
A computer usually cannot record an external HDMI signal directly: the capture device receives the source video and audio and makes them available to recording software. OBS’s console-capture guidance describes using a game capture device as a video capture source. [OBS Project]

Connect the HDMI source and set it up in OBS
- Connect the source device’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture device to the recording computer using its supported USB or internal interface. Install any required driver or firmware by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open OBS and add a source: in the Sources panel, select the plus button and choose Video Capture Device. Create a new source if prompted.
- Select the capture device in the source’s device settings. Check that both video and audio are present, then adjust resolution, frame rate, and other available settings to match the source and capture device.
- Make a short test recording and play it back. Confirm that the picture is visible, sound is recorded, and audio stays in sync before recording a longer session.
Specific controls and recommended settings vary by capture device. Plugable’s NIX setup guide, for example, shows its device being added in OBS as a Video Capture Device; use the instructions for your own model rather than assuming its settings apply to other cards. [Plugable setup guide]
Choose a capture device that fits your source
Check the device’s specifications and the manufacturer’s support information before buying. A model that accepts an HDMI signal is not automatically a match for every computer, operating system, video format, or recording setup.

- Resolution and frame rate: Confirm the device supports the output you plan to capture, and distinguish capture capability from any separate passthrough specification.
- Operating-system compatibility: Verify support for your exact operating system and device model. OBS recommends preferring USB Video Class (UVC)-compatible capture devices on macOS and Linux for best compatibility, but UVC alone does not establish support for every device or OS version. [OBS Project]
- HDR and capture format: For external HDR capture, OBS says the capture device needs to support a 10-bit format such as P010. Its cited HDR guidance applies to Windows, so check current compatibility before choosing a device. [OBS Project HDR guidance]
- Passthrough and latency: If you want to view the source on a separate display while recording, check that the device has HDMI passthrough. Capture delay and passthrough behavior are separate considerations; consult the model’s specifications.
- Audio synchronization: Look for device-specific information on keeping captured audio and video in sync during long recordings.
OBS’s certified-device criteria include native OBS compatibility, under 80 ms average additional latency, zero-latency passthrough where present, and audio synchronization for at least four hours of consecutive use. These are criteria for OBS certification, not guarantees that every capture device meets them. Its certified-device page lists models and their certification information. [OBS certified devices]
HDR support needs a specific check
In HDR guidance dated August 2, 2022, OBS listed ASUS CU4K30, ASUS 4KPRO, and EVGA XR1 Pro among OBS-certified devices supported for HDR, as well as tested models from AVerMedia and Elgato. Device support can change; confirm current firmware, drivers, and compatibility with the manufacturer and OBS before purchasing. [OBS Project HDR guidance]

Why the capture preview may be black
Check for HDCP protection
HDCP is content protection used on some HDMI signals. A capture card is not a way to record HDCP-protected content. Elgato’s support documentation states: “If you connect an HDMI signal that has HDCP protection, then your Elgato Game Capture device will not display video.” That statement describes Elgato’s devices; Plugable likewise says its NIX card does not support HDCP and notes that some media playback apps activate it. [Elgato support] [Plugable setup guide]
Some cable and satellite boxes also block HDMI capture with HDCP, according to Hauppauge’s support information. Protection behavior depends on the source and content; do not assume that every HDMI output is recordable. [Hauppauge support]

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check the connection and device setup
- Verify that the HDMI cable runs from the source’s output to the capture device’s input.
- Confirm OBS has the correct capture device selected and that the device is connected and recognized by the computer.
- Check the manufacturer’s driver, firmware, and setup instructions for your exact model.
- Confirm the source’s output format is supported by the capture device and that the OBS source settings match.
- If you need a separate display while recording, verify the model offers passthrough and connect the display as its instructions specify.
Record only content you are allowed to capture
Use this workflow for unprotected content you have permission to record. If a source or app enables HDCP, choose a lawful, authorized way to access or record that content rather than trying to bypass its protection.
