Real-Time Browser APIs: WebSockets vs. SSE vs. gRPC-Web

WebSockets support browser-level two-way messaging; SSE delivers server-to-browser events; gRPC-Web suits browser calls to gRPC services when its streaming limits fit.

For messages flowing both ways over one live browser connection, start with WebSockets. Use Server-Sent Events (SSE) when the browser only needs to receive updates and can send actions through ordinary HTTP requests. Consider gRPC-Web when browser code needs to call an existing gRPC service using unary calls or server streams; the browser guidance cited here does not support client-streaming or bidirectional streaming.

What “bi-directional” means for a browser API

These options do not offer the same message directions. WebSockets enable bidirectional communication between a web application and a server-side process. SSE carries events from the server to the browser over a persistent HTTP response; it does not carry browser commands back over that event channel. gRPC-Web gives browser applications access to gRPC services, but its documented browser streaming capabilities are narrower than native gRPC’s.

That distinction should drive the choice more than the word “real-time.” A page that displays notifications has different needs from a collaborative editor in which browser and server exchange messages over the same connection.

Compare direction, browser interface, and infrastructure

Option Message direction in the browser Browser interface and transport shape Infrastructure considerations Good fit when
WebSockets Bidirectional: browser and server can send messages over the connection. WebSocket browser interface. The server path must support WebSockets. The standard describes the API and protocol, not whether a particular proxy or deployment is configured correctly. The browser and server need to exchange messages over one live connection.
SSE Server to browser only; browser actions need a separate request path. EventSource consumes a persistent HTTP response with the text/event-stream media type. The server can send named events. Check that the application and intermediaries in the target deployment handle the HTTP event stream as required. The browser mainly listens for notifications, feeds, or dashboard updates.
gRPC-Web Unary calls and server streaming are documented in the cited browser guidance. Browser client-streaming and bidirectional streaming are not supported there. A browser-specific gRPC-Web client and protocol; it is not the same transport as native HTTP/2 gRPC. The server must support gRPC-Web. The project names Envoy as its official proxy with built-in support. Cross-origin calls require server-side CORS configuration. The browser needs to call an existing gRPC service and unary calls or server streams meet the requirement.

These are architectural distinctions, not a throughput or latency ranking. No performance winner can be inferred without representative tests for the application’s workload and deployment.

When WebSockets are the right choice

Choose WebSockets when browser and server both need to send messages over the same live connection—for example, interactive sessions that exchange ongoing updates and user actions. The WHATWG WebSockets Standard describes the interface as enabling web applications to maintain bidirectional communications with server-side processes.

The protocol does not define your application’s message format or solve its connection-management decisions. Design those explicitly, including:

  • Lifecycle and recovery: specify what happens on disconnect, how clients reconnect, and whether any missed state must be fetched again.
  • Deployment path: confirm that the server, proxy, and other intermediaries support the WebSocket traffic required by the application.

When SSE is the right choice

Use SSE when the browser primarily receives server-pushed updates and can submit user actions through a separate HTTP API. The browser’s EventSource interface consumes a persistent event stream; the server responds with text/event-stream and can send named events. MDN describes this as one-way communication from server to browser, so a page cannot send commands back through the EventSource channel. See MDN’s guide to using server-sent events and its EventSource reference.

This separation can suit notifications, feeds, and dashboards: the stream delivers updates, while ordinary HTTP requests handle actions such as changing a setting or submitting a form. MDN describes SSE as widely available across browsers and available across browsers since January 2020; check the browser versions your application actually supports before relying on that availability claim.

When gRPC-Web is the right choice

Consider gRPC-Web when browser code needs to call an existing gRPC service and the required interaction fits unary calls or server streaming. The gRPC-Web browser-features documentation explains that browser limitations require a transport different from native HTTP/2 gRPC. The project identifies Envoy as the official proxy with built-in gRPC-Web support.

Do not assume that the browser inherits native gRPC’s full streaming model. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core gRPC-Web guidance documents server streaming but not client-streaming or bidirectional streaming for browser clients. It also calls out server configuration and CORS for cross-domain calls. The gRPC-Web protocol document describes text-encoded response streams using the application/grpc-web-text media type with base64 encoding.

Choose by interaction pattern and deployment

  1. Write down who sends messages. If the browser and server must both send messages over one live connection, start with WebSockets. If messages only need to flow from server to browser, consider SSE. If the browser is calling a gRPC service, assess gRPC-Web against the required call patterns.
  2. Separate updates from commands. If the browser can receive updates over a stream but submit actions with ordinary HTTP requests, SSE may be sufficient. If commands must travel over the same live connection as server messages, SSE does not meet that requirement.
  3. Check the gRPC-Web streaming boundary. If unary calls or server streams suffice, gRPC-Web may fit. If browser client-streaming or bidirectional streaming is mandatory, the cited browser guidance does not establish gRPC-Web as a fit.
  4. Validate the whole path. Check supported browser clients, server and proxy support, cross-origin CORS configuration where relevant, authentication, and operational constraints. A protocol’s documented capabilities do not confirm that a particular deployment is configured to use them.
  5. Test the workload before comparing performance. Expected connection count, message patterns, payloads, and intermediaries matter to deployment decisions. The sources cited here do not establish a universal latency or throughput winner.

Can gRPC-Web completely replace WebSockets?

Not when the requirement is browser-to-server and server-to-browser streaming over one live connection. The cited Microsoft guidance documents server streaming for browser clients, but not client-streaming or bidirectional streaming. gRPC-Web can still be appropriate for browser access to gRPC services when unary calls or server streams are enough; that is a different requirement from full browser-level two-way messaging.
