Android combines product flavors with build types to create variants; iOS schemes select build actions and configurations. Make sure each selection maps to real app settings—such as its backend and bundle or application identifier—and that React Native packages JavaScript for builds expected to run without Metro.
How should you define dev, staging, and production?
Start with a short environment matrix rather than adding native build options one by one. The entries below are a planning model, not prescribed values: choose the actual endpoints, identifiers, services, and distribution lanes for your app.

| Environment | Backend and app identity | JavaScript and distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Development | Development backend; use a distinct app name and identifier if it must coexist with production. | Often run with Metro during local development. Use a development signing and install workflow. |
| Staging | Staging backend; use a distinct name and identifier if testers need it installed alongside production. | Decide whether testers use Metro or a self-contained bundle. Select the corresponding signing and tester distribution lane. |
| Production | Production backend and production app identity. | Use a release build with the appropriate signing and store distribution workflow. |
For each row, record the backend or base URL, display name, application or bundle identifier, feature flags, analytics destination, push-notification configuration, deep-link domains, signing and distribution destination, and whether Metro is expected. A scheme or flavor name does not change an endpoint by itself: the selected configuration must feed values into the native app and the JavaScript code that uses them. Do not put secrets in client-side configuration; values compiled into an app can be inspected, so enforce access to sensitive resources on the server.

Decide whether you need environments, build types, or both
Android build types describe build behavior, commonly debug and release. Product flavors describe app variations, such as development, staging, or production. Gradle combines the two into build variants. If your only distinction is debug versus release behavior, build types may be enough. If environments need different identities, resources, or configuration, flavors provide a natural axis for those differences. Avoid adding flavor dimensions for every preference: each dimension increases the combinations the team may need to build and validate.

On iOS, use a consistent environment naming scheme for schemes and the configurations they select. Keep that mapping aligned with Android and CI, but verify how it is implemented in the particular project template and Xcode version; a scheme label alone is not environment configuration.
How do Android product flavors work with React Native?
In a new React Native Android project, the usual build types are debug and release; custom product flavors are not created for you. Add flavors only for the app variations you need. Android’s build variants guide explains how flavors belong to dimensions, can override shared settings, and can use variant-specific source sets for code and resources.

Read and select the generated variant name
With one flavor dimension, Gradle combines the flavor name and build type. For example, a staging flavor and release build type produce stagingRelease. The React Native Gradle Plugin documentation illustrates the multiplication: two flavors crossed with three build types produce six variants, including fullDebug, fullStaging, and fullRelease, plus the corresponding lite variants. That six-variant set is an example, not a required project layout. See the React Native Gradle Plugin guide for its variant and bundling behavior.

Use Android Studio’s Build Variants view or the project’s Gradle tasks to confirm the exact names your project generates. Then select that exact variant locally and in CI. For example, if the project really has a stagingRelease variant, its app module can commonly be built with ./gradlew :app:assembleStagingRelease; use the project’s Gradle wrapper and verify the task exists rather than assuming every project has the same module name or variants.

Keep React Native’s Metro and bundle behavior intentional
React Native’s Gradle Plugin defaults debuggableVariants to only debug. A variant listed there does not receive a shipped JavaScript bundle and needs Metro to run. This is useful for a custom development variant intended for local work, but it is a trap for a staging build meant to install and run independently.
Check the generated variant spelling and case against the project’s debuggableVariants setting. A stagingDebug variant may intentionally use Metro; a stagingRelease distributed to testers should generally have its JavaScript bundled rather than be treated as debuggable. Before distributing a supposedly standalone staging build, install it with Metro stopped. The React Native documentation states: “Variants that are listed as debuggableVariants will not come with a shipped bundle, so you’ll need Metro to run them.”

Separate install identity and environment resources
A flavor can use applicationIdSuffix and versionNameSuffix, and Android’s build configuration can override applicationId. That makes it possible to install a nonproduction build alongside production when the resulting identifiers differ. Decide explicitly which variants should coexist, and ensure the visible name, icon, backend, links, push setup, and analytics destination agree with the selected environment. An identifier suffix alone does not configure those other values.
How do iOS schemes select an environment?
An Xcode scheme determines which build action and configuration Xcode uses. For environment-specific apps, teams commonly maintain schemes mapped to configurations and settings for each environment, including bundle identifiers when separate installs are wanted. Those settings must actually be consumed by the app; renaming or selecting a scheme does not automatically switch a JavaScript API URL.

The exact steps for creating and mapping three schemes are project-template- and Xcode-version-specific. The React Native source cited here establishes how to select Release for distribution, but is not a universal recipe for duplicating configurations, creating schemes, wiring .xcconfig files, or updating CocoaPods mappings. Follow the conventions in the project being built and verify the selected configuration’s values in both native and JavaScript code.
Use Release for distribution
React Native’s App Store publishing guide says that “Building an app for distribution in the App Store requires using the Release scheme in Xcode.” Its Release configuration disables the in-app Dev Menu and bundles JavaScript locally, so a device build can run without the development computer. In Xcode, the guide directs developers to Product → Scheme → Edit Scheme to select Release; it also documents choosing Release with the React Native CLI’s --mode Release option.
For the archive and store workflow, check that the bundle identifier matches the intended Apple Developer account identifier, select an Any iOS Device (arm64) destination, choose signing deliberately, and archive for upload or distribution through App Store Connect. A successful archive does not prove that the app points to the production backend or uses the intended services; validate those settings in the app itself.

- Write the matrix. Record what differs across environments and which builds should coexist on a device.
- Keep shared defaults shared. Put common resources and settings in common configuration, and isolate only intentional environment differences.
- Name selections explicitly. Document the exact Android variant and iOS scheme/configuration developers and CI must select.
- Check Android bundling. Confirm only Metro-dependent variants are listed as debuggable; test a staging artifact with Metro stopped if it should run standalone.
- Validate the candidate. Check its backend, visible identity, push and deep-link settings, analytics destination, signing, and distribution lane before upload.
- Inspect the production artifact. Verify its build metadata and configuration rather than treating a successful compile as proof that production was selected.
Native iOS builds require macOS hardware locally, according to React Native’s 0.81 environment setup guide. That requirement applies to building projects with native iOS code, not to Android-only builds; check the setup guidance for the React Native version used by your project because the cited page is version-specific. Teams using Expo may also consider its optional managed build workflow, but it is complementary context rather than a replacement for the native flavor and scheme decisions described here.
