There is no clear single winner across current buying guides. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) lead Tom’s Guide’s noise-cancelling guide, while What Hi-Fi? names Sony WH-1000XM6 its best overall. RTINGS also favors the XM6 over the XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra in its comparison, but says everyday differences among these strong performers can be small. Choose by the advantage that matters most to you—not by treating any one ranking as universal.
The available comparisons do not establish ten products as a consistently ranked, personally tested list. These recommendations are attributed to the publications that reviewed or compared them; they are not a claim of testing by this article’s writer.

Which noise-cancelling headphones should you buy?
Use this shortlist as a starting point, then match the pick to your priorities. The outlets do not agree on one overall winner, and models bearing similar names may be different generations with different specifications.
| Model | Best fit | What the cited guide or review says |
|---|---|---|
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Noise cancellation-focused buyers who want the newer Bose generation | Tom’s Guide’s best-overall pick; rated battery life is 30 hours, or 24 hours with Immersive Audio, according to that guide. |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Buyers weighing noise isolation, calls and an overall flagship pick | What Hi-Fi? names it best overall. TechRadar highlights it for call quality among standard ANC headphones; RTINGS favors it over the XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra on isolation, battery life and microphone in its comparison. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones | Buyers considering the original Ultra generation | TechRadar’s overall pick; its guide gives this reviewed model 24 hours of rated battery life. Do not treat that figure as the specification for the 2nd Gen. |
| JLab JBuds Lux ANC | Shoppers looking for a lower-cost over-ear option | Tom’s Guide positions it below $100 and reports 40 hours rated with ANC on or 70 hours with ANC off. The guide notes that no carry case is included; check current price and stock. |
| Marshall Monitor III | Buyers prioritizing long rated battery life | Tom’s Guide reports 70 hours with ANC on or 100 hours with ANC off, and highlights comfort and sound. It says the ANC is below its top pick. |
| Sonos Ace Ultra | Buyers who would use Sonos TV-audio features | Tom’s Guide highlights Wi-Fi TV audio swapping, improved ANC and 35 hours of rated battery life with ANC on. It describes the price as steep and the value as dependent on the Sonos ecosystem; confirm current product naming and availability. |
| Apple AirPods Max 2 | Apple users considering Apple’s over-ear headphones | What Hi-Fi? says ANC is improved over the first generation, but that Sony and Bose flagships block noise more effectively. |
| Bose QuietComfort Headphones | Buyers considering a lower-priced Bose option | TechRadar lists the model in an under-$250 price band in its guide. That is a guide-era price observation, not a live-price guarantee. |
| 1More SonoFlow Pro HQ51 | Shoppers considering a lower-cost option | TechRadar lists it in an under-$100 price band in its guide. Check the current price and availability before buying. |
How to choose among the leading models
For a noise-cancellation-first decision
Start by comparing the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) with the Sony WH-1000XM6. Tom’s Guide selects the newer Bose as its best overall, while RTINGS reports that the XM6 leads its comparison against the prior XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra. Those findings reflect different sources and comparisons, not a universal ranking. RTINGS cautions that real-world differences between leading models may be small.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
For calls or frequent video meetings
TechRadar identifies the Sony WH-1000XM6 as its strongest choice for call quality among standard ANC headphones. RTINGS also reports the XM6 leading its XM6/XM5/Bose comparison on microphone performance. These are review judgments, not a guarantee that every caller, device or setting will produce the same result.
For long stretches away from a charger
Compare battery claims only when the ANC setting and exact model are clear. Tom’s Guide lists 70 hours with ANC on for the Marshall Monitor III and 40 hours with ANC on for the JLab JBuds Lux ANC. The same guide gives the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) 30 hours, falling to 24 hours with Immersive Audio. These are rated figures, not a promise of identical runtime in every use.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

For ecosystem features
The Sonos Ace Ultra may make more sense if you will use its Wi-Fi TV audio swapping feature; Tom’s Guide says its value depends on the Sonos ecosystem. Apple users may also weigh the AirPods Max 2’s integration, but ecosystem fit should not be confused with stronger noise cancellation: What Hi-Fi? says Sony and Bose flagships block noise more effectively.

What the Sony WH-1000XM6 announcement does—and does not—establish
Sony announced the WH-1000XM6 on May 16, 2025. The company attributes its noise-cancelling performance to an advanced processor and adaptive microphone system, saying cancellation is optimized in real time. That is Sony’s product claim, not independent proof that the XM6 will outperform every rival in every environment.

What to check before you buy
- Exact generation: Confirm whether a listing is for Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) or the original QuietComfort Ultra. Their cited battery figures differ.
- How you will use ANC: Battery ratings can change when features such as Immersive Audio are enabled, so compare figures with matching settings.
- Fit and comfort: Headband pressure, earcup fit and a secure seal affect whether headphones remain comfortable and isolate well for you. The cited comparisons do not establish a universal fit winner.
- Calls and sound: Microphone performance, preferred sound and EQ flexibility are separate from ANC. If these matter, check the specific review and, where possible, try the headphones with your devices.
- Portability and protection: The JLab JBuds Lux ANC’s cited guide notes no included carry case. Check folding design and case inclusion for any model you intend to travel with.
- Current price and availability: Guide-era price bands and product listings can change. Verify both before purchase.
