React Native 0.84: What Its Prebuilt iOS Binaries Change

React Native 0.84 uses precompiled iOS core binaries by default, reducing source compilation during clean builds without removing native app build and release steps.

React Native 0.84 now uses precompiled iOS core binaries by default: CocoaPods downloads the framework during pod install, rather than compiling React Native core from source on every clean build. This article is about those binaries—not Expo’s prebuild command. Your app still has native build and release steps.

What “prebuilt React Native” means in version 0.84

In React Native 0.84, the iOS React Native core is provided as precompiled .xcframework binaries. When you run pod install, CocoaPods fetches and uses those binaries. The default path therefore avoids compiling React Native core from source for every clean build, as the React Native 0.84 release announcement explains.

This change is specifically about precompiled React Native core binaries for iOS. It is not a claim that every native dependency in your app is prebuilt, nor that Android uses the same binary delivery path.

Precompiled binaries versus building React Native core from source

Aspect Default in React Native 0.84 Opting out
What happens during pod installation CocoaPods downloads and uses React Native core’s precompiled iOS .xcframework. React Native core is built from source when installing pods.
Work on a clean build React Native core does not need to be recompiled from source for each clean build. The local source-build work is required.
Platform scope The documented precompiled-core change applies to iOS. The opt-out setting controls the iOS core build described in the release notes.

The 0.84 announcement characterizes the result as significantly reduced iOS build times, but does not give a numeric result in the cited passage. An earlier, experimental 0.81 announcement said compile times could be reduced by “up to 10x” in projects where React Native was the primary dependency. That was React Native’s 2025 upper-bound claim, not a guaranteed outcome or an independent benchmark; results depend on the project and build conditions. See the React Native 0.81 announcement.

  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How to build React Native from source instead

To opt out of the precompiled core and build it from source, set RCT_USE_PREBUILT_RNCORE=0 when installing pods. For example, in a shell where the project’s iOS directory is the current directory:

RCT_USE_PREBUILT_RNCORE=0 pod install

This is an opt-out for cases where you specifically need a source build; ordinary projects can use the 0.84 default without setting it. The release announcement documents this variable for the CocoaPods installation step.

What precompiled core does not remove

A React Native app is not converted into a JavaScript-only deliverable. React Native still integrates with native platform code and toolchains. For example, Codegen generates platform-specific native artifacts for native modules and components, which are incorporated into app builds; see the Codegen documentation.

For iOS distribution, the documented App Store workflow still uses Xcode’s Release scheme, bundles JavaScript locally, and archives the app for upload through App Store Connect. Precompiling React Native core does not replace those steps. The current workflow is described in React Native’s App Store publishing guide.

How this relates to other build-speed optimizations

Precompiled iOS core binaries are one specific change, not a catch-all name for faster builds. React Native’s build-speed guide covers separate techniques: selecting only the Android ABI needed for a development build, enabling Gradle configuration caching, and using compiler caches such as local ccache or distributed sccache. These techniques have different scopes and are not prerequisites for the precompiled iOS framework. See React Native’s build-speed guide.

Version details to keep separate

React Native 0.84 also makes Hermes V1 the default on iOS and Android and requires Node.js 22.11 or later, according to its release announcement. Those are version-specific upgrade details, not effects of precompiled iOS binaries.

React Native 0.81 introduced precompiled iOS builds experimentally. Its announcement described historical limitations, including inability to step into React Native internals when using those experimental binaries, and an Xcode 26 Beta workaround involving SWIFT_ENABLE_EXPLICIT_MODULES=NO. The 0.84 release post does not establish whether either limitation applies to the current default, so they should not be treated as current 0.84 guidance.
