React and Three.js 3D Portfolio: What to Know Before You Build

A practical guide to adding an interactive Three.js scene to a React portfolio with React Three Fiber, from version compatibility and Canvas sizing to assets, performance, and deployment.

You can add an interactive 3D scene to a React developer portfolio with React Three Fiber, while keeping navigation, project details, and contact information in ordinary page markup. The key decisions are how the scene fits into the React app, which React Three Fiber version matches your React version, where assets live, and how you will test performance and deployment.

How React Three Fiber fits into a React portfolio

React Three Fiber is a React renderer for Three.js. It lets you describe a Three.js scene with React components, so the scene can use component structure and React state while the rest of the portfolio remains a conventional React site. Three.js provides the underlying 3D capabilities; Fiber connects them to React.

This approach suits a portfolio that already uses React and benefits from keeping scene elements in the same component-oriented codebase. Direct Three.js is another route when you want to work with Three.js without adopting its React renderer. The right choice depends on your app, how you want to organize scene logic, and the amount of direct Three.js control you need—not a universal speed or simplicity advantage.

How to add a scene to the app

1. Set up the project and verify versions

The Three.js installation guide describes using npm with a build tool for local development. React Three Fiber’s introduction lists three, @types/three, and @react-three/fiber for installation. Its version guidance pairs Fiber v8 with React 18 and Fiber v9 with React 19. Check the current documentation and your installed package versions before copying commands or dependency versions, since these details can change.

2. Place Canvas inside the React layout

In the official first-scene guide, Canvas is imported into the React app. It initializes the scene and camera, renders the scene, and sizes itself to its parent. That makes the parent’s dimensions part of the implementation: give the scene a deliberate height and decide how it should resize across screen widths.

Use ordinary React elements for headings, navigation, project cards, and contact links; use the Canvas subtree for the 3D experience. This keeps essential portfolio information available as page content rather than making visitors navigate an immersive scene just to find your work.

3. Add models and textures

The Three.js installation guide describes keeping static files such as models and textures in a public/ directory. A portfolio repository example also organizes model and texture assets. The precise paths and loading approach depend on your build tool and project structure, so adapt the example to your app rather than assuming every React setup handles assets identically.

How to make the scene interactive without neglecting performance

Interaction can make a scene a useful demonstration of implementation choices, but it also adds rendering work. React Three Fiber’s performance guidance discusses the continuous animation-loop context, reusing resources loaded from the same URL, instancing, and performance scaling. A portfolio project example also describes lazy loading, level of detail, and quality adjustment. These are techniques to evaluate, not measured guarantees for a particular portfolio.

  • Reuse loaded resources where appropriate instead of needlessly loading duplicates.
  • Consider instancing when a scene repeats the same geometry many times.
  • Use lazy loading or level of detail where they fit the experience and assets.
  • Scale scene quality to suit the device, and profile the actual page rather than assuming it will perform well.
  • Test the finished layout at target screen sizes, including lower-powered devices.

The cited material supplies no benchmark for this portfolio implementation, so it cannot establish a frame rate or performance improvement. Measure your own scene under the conditions your visitors are likely to use.

How to deploy the portfolio

Deployment depends on the build tool and hosting workflow you choose. Build and test the project using its current framework instructions, and confirm that the published site can retrieve its models and textures from the paths used in development. The Three.js guide covers local development with npm and a build tool, while the JavaScript Mastery walkthrough includes hosting setup and deployment chapters; neither establishes one host as the best choice.

The official React Three Fiber introduction explains the renderer’s role, installation, and version pairing. The first-scene guide covers Canvas setup and sizing. For project setup and static assets, consult the Three.js installation guide; for rendering techniques, see React Three Fiber’s performance guide.

The portfolio walkthrough is available from JavaScript Mastery. Its date matters: it was published in 2024, so confirm its package and deployment instructions before relying on them. For a code example of asset organization and performance approaches, see the Three.js 3D Portfolio repository.
