Google Messages can automatically resend an RCS message as text if that setting is enabled, or let you switch an undelivered message manually. On iPhone, Messages can try SMS when iMessage is unavailable if “Send as Text Message” is enabled. Whether a message can get through still depends on carrier support, settings, and the required network connection.
What changes when a message falls back?
RCS, SMS, and MMS are different ways to deliver messages. RCS supports features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and richer media where the app, carrier, and participants support them. SMS is primarily for text; MMS is used for media and some group messaging. Carrier and app limits can affect how media and group conversations work.

A fallback can help deliver a message when RCS or iMessage is unavailable, but it is not a full-featured substitute. SMS/MMS does not provide RCS typing indicators or read receipts, and SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, according to Google and Apple. The connection required also changes: RCS and MMS need Wi-Fi or mobile data in the documented guidance, while SMS uses cellular service; Apple notes that SMS may also work through Wi-Fi Calling where the carrier offers it.

Google Messages uses RCS when all participants in a conversation have RCS available and enabled. RCS availability varies by carrier and region, and RCS messages use Wi-Fi or mobile data. If someone is offline or lacks data, Google says SMS or MMS may still be available. You control whether the app automatically tries that fallback.

Set automatic text-message fallback
- Open Google Messages and go to Settings → RCS chats.
- Check the RCS connection status and whether Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS) is enabled.
- If enabled, Google Messages can retry an unavailable RCS message as SMS/MMS. The resulting message uses the capabilities and connection requirements of SMS or MMS, not RCS.
If an RCS message remains undelivered, Google Messages may keep trying. To attempt another delivery method, tap the message timestamp and select Switch to text (SMS/MMS). Google warns that SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted.
What happens to encryption?
Google’s end-to-end encryption applies to eligible Google Messages conversations when both participants use Google Messages, both have RCS enabled, and both have data or Wi-Fi. If an eligible conversation loses RCS access or its data/Wi-Fi connection, it can downgrade to SMS, which is not end-to-end encrypted. This guarantee applies to that Google Messages setup; it should not be assumed for every RCS app or cross-platform conversation.

What happens in Apple Messages on iPhone?
Apple Messages can send iMessage, RCS, or SMS/MMS. RCS is provided by the carrier and requires iOS 18 or later plus a carrier plan that supports RCS on iPhone; availability varies by carrier and region. When iMessage is not being used, RCS may be used if supported. If neither iMessage nor RCS is used, SMS/MMS depends on the carrier plan and service.

Try SMS when iMessage is unavailable
To have Messages try SMS when iMessage cannot be used, turn on Send as Text Message in Messages settings. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking carrier support and whether the phone has the right network connection for the message type.

Read bubble colors carefully
Blue bubbles indicate iMessage. Green bubbles can indicate RCS, SMS, or MMS, so green alone does not identify which service delivered the message. Check the message type or RCS status instead. Apple says SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted; its RCS security depends on carrier and participant conditions, so do not assume a universal encryption status for iPhone RCS.

How RCS, SMS, and MMS differ

How to troubleshoot a message that will not send
- Check the message service and settings. In Google Messages, open Settings → RCS chats and inspect the connection status and automatic resend option. On iPhone, check Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging if that option is available for your iOS version and carrier, and check Send as Text Message for iMessage fallback.
- Confirm carrier and account support. Check that your carrier, region, plan, and account support the service you are trying to use; verify any required account balance or credit.
- Check the right connection. RCS and MMS need Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS needs cellular service, subject to carrier features such as Wi-Fi Calling. Check signal and make sure Airplane Mode is off.
- For Google Messages, verify the app setup. Google recommends updating Messages and making it the default SMS app. For MMS trouble, confirm a data connection and restore default APN settings if they were changed.
- Consider a temporary group issue. Google notes that an RCS group connection problem can result in an individual SMS/MMS conversation.
- If you switched from iPhone to Android and messages are missing, Google advises deactivating iMessage for your phone number; also check the number and default messaging app.
