Start by printing your printer’s own nozzle check or print-quality diagnostic page. Missing or broken color marks point toward an ink-delivery problem; a clean test page suggests you should check the photo, app, driver, and color settings instead. Then verify ink, paper, and print settings before running any model-specific cleaning cycle.
Start with a printer-generated test
Print a nozzle check, print-quality diagnostic, or equivalent page from the printer’s maintenance menu. Use the instructions for your exact model to find and interpret the test; menu names and locations vary by printer and operating system. Canon and Epson both use nozzle patterns to help identify interrupted color output and streaking (Canon’s TR7120 nozzle-check guidance; Epson’s print-quality troubleshooting).

- Gaps, missing bars, or broken lines: check ink and paper, then follow the model’s recommended head-cleaning procedure.
- A clean test page, but a bad photo: investigate the image, application, driver, and color-management settings before cleaning the printer.
Check ink and paper before cleaning
Confirm ink levels
Check every color’s level in the printer utility or control panel. Low or old ink can contribute to faint output or incorrect colors. Replace ink only when the level and your printer’s model-specific guidance indicate that it is needed. Cleaning cycles consume ink, so checking levels first can avoid wasting it (Epson troubleshooting guidance; HP printer troubleshooting).
Check the paper and media setting
- Use photo paper that your printer supports and load it with the printable side oriented as directed by the paper and printer instructions.
- Choose the matching paper or media type in the print dialog. A mismatch between the actual paper and the selected media can affect print quality.
- Use clean, dry, uncurled paper. If the result is faint, streaked, or unexpectedly dull, check that the sheet is not damaged or damp.
There is no universally required brand or finish: choose media compatible with your printer and match the driver’s media setting to it (Canon’s TR7120 guidance; Epson troubleshooting guidance; HP print-quality guidance).

Clean the printhead only if the test pattern supports it
If the nozzle check has gaps or missing colors, use the printer’s built-in head-cleaning function and then print another check. Follow the procedure for your exact model; do not assume that another brand uses the same steps or limits. Epson’s general guidance for supported inkjet families allows up to three standard cleanings and describes power cleaning as a more ink-intensive option for severe or persistent problems. Those instructions are Epson-specific, not a schedule for all printers (Epson print-quality troubleshooting).
- Run the model’s standard cleaning utility if its diagnostic pattern is broken.
- Print another nozzle check to see whether the pattern improved.
- Use a deeper or power-cleaning option only if your model supports it and its instructions recommend it.
Repeated cleaning without checking the result can consume ink without resolving the cause. Do not dismantle or manually scrub the printhead unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model explicitly call for a procedure.

Correct color and grayscale settings
If the printer-generated page is clean but the photo’s colors are wrong, check the print job’s color and media settings first. Confirm color printing is enabled and grayscale or black-and-white printing is off. Then review color options in both the printer driver and the photo-editing application. If both are applying color corrections, they can conflict; use the application’s and printer’s documentation to choose a consistent color-handling path (Canon’s TR7120 guidance; Epson troubleshooting guidance).

A print will not necessarily look exactly like its on-screen image. Epson’s AM-C400/AM-C550 User’s Guide puts it this way: “Your printed colors can never exactly match your on-screen colors.” Ink can also look different before it dries. Color management can help bring the print closer to the display, but an exact match is not guaranteed (Epson AM-C400/AM-C550 User’s Guide).

When to contact the manufacturer
If the printer’s own diagnostic still shows missing colors or bands after you have followed the correct maintenance steps, consult the manufacturer’s support page or manual for that exact model. Use its warranty or authorized-service options before buying parts or opening the printer. A persistent pattern does not, by itself, establish that a printhead has failed; model-specific diagnostics are needed to determine the next step (Epson troubleshooting guidance; HP print-quality guidance).
