RCS can bring higher-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, and richer group chats to texts between an iPhone and Android phone—but only when RCS is supported and enabled for everyone in the conversation. Otherwise, messages can use SMS or MMS. On an iPhone, all three appear in green bubbles, so green does not tell you which one is active.
What changes with RCS?
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the richer messaging option for compatible iPhone–Android conversations. Compared with SMS/MMS, it can support higher-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, and more group-chat functions. These features depend on compatible devices, settings, carriers, and regional availability; they are not guaranteed in every chat. Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS and Google’s RCS FAQ describe the supported features and conditions.

| What to compare | RCS | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Supports higher-resolution photos and videos. | Can send photos and videos, but without the richer RCS experience. |
| Chat signals | Can show typing indicators and read receipts. | Do not expect RCS-specific typing and read indicators. |
| Group chats | Supports richer group-chat functions when all participants have RCS enabled. | Can carry group messages when RCS is unavailable. |
| Connection | Uses mobile data or Wi-Fi; carrier and regional support matter. | Delivered through the carrier. |
| iPhone bubble color | Green. | Green. |
Why an iPhone still shows green bubbles
Green means the conversation is not using iMessage; it does not distinguish RCS from SMS or MMS. To check whether RCS is active, look for RCS information in Messages settings or in the conversation’s composer and indicators. Apple’s Messages setup guide explains the iPhone’s messaging settings and bubble colors.

What you need to use RCS on an iPhone
Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan with a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone. Availability varies by carrier and region, so an up-to-date iPhone may still not have RCS available. Google likewise notes that RCS may not be available to iPhone users in every country or on every carrier.

When messages fall back to SMS or MMS
RCS works only when all participants in a conversation have it enabled and available. If that condition is not met, messages may be sent as SMS or MMS instead. Apple describes SMS/MMS as the carrier option when iMessage or RCS is not being used; Google also explains that RCS availability depends on participants’ support. The exact resend controls and carrier behavior can vary.
RCS uses mobile data or Wi-Fi. Google notes that Wi-Fi access that does not charge for connectivity adds no message cost in its description, while mobile-data use is subject to the user’s plan. Carrier terms differ, so RCS should not be assumed to be free in every situation.

Is an iPhone-to-Android RCS chat encrypted?
Do not assume that it is. SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Encryption for RCS depends on the platform, carrier, and conversation. Google says its end-to-end encryption applies to eligible Google Messages conversations with other Google Messages users, and its Android–iOS FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. Apple’s May 22, 2026 support article describes beta end-to-end encrypted RCS in Messages beginning with iOS 26.5 on supported carriers, rolling out over time, and requiring every participant’s carrier to support encryption. These conditions make encryption support evolving and non-universal.
Before treating a conversation as end-to-end protected, look for an explicit “Encrypted” label or lock icon in the messaging app. Apple’s messaging comparison, Google’s RCS FAQ, and Google’s guide to how RCS chats keep conversations secure describe these platform-specific conditions.
