How to Tell Whether an X.Org Vulnerability Affects Your Linux Distribution

Find out whether an X.Org CVE affects your Linux system by checking the upstream component advisory and your distribution’s status for the exact release and package version.

To find out whether an X.Org vulnerability affects your Linux system, check the CVE against both the upstream X.Org advisory and your distribution’s security tracker. Then match the tracker’s status and fixed package version to your exact distribution release and installed package. An upstream X.Org version by itself does not tell you whether your distribution’s package is vulnerable.

Why one X.Org version number is not enough

“X.Org” can refer to different components, including the X server, Xwayland, and libraries such as libXfont2. Each module has its own version. X.Org says module versions provide the most accurate version information; an umbrella label such as X11R7.7 does not identify every module’s version. See X.Org’s version-numbering explanation.

Upstream advisories identify affected components and upstream fixes, but Linux distributions package and maintain software in their own release contexts. They may apply fixes to an existing package without adopting the same upstream version number. The relevant threshold is therefore the distribution’s fixed package version or its explicit status for your release—not a simple comparison with the upstream version.

Check the vulnerability against your exact system

  1. Record the CVE identifier. Use the identifier shown in the security report or advisory. If there is no CVE, search the relevant X.Org advisory by issue or component.
  2. Identify the affected component. Read the X.Org advisory to determine whether the issue concerns xorg-server, Xwayland, libXfont2, or another module. X.Org’s security advisory index lists issues and upstream fixed versions. It also cautions that an advisory listed under a recent release can affect older releases, sometimes back to when the affected functionality was introduced.
  3. Note your distribution, release, and installed package. Use your system’s usual release-identification and package-management tools to record the precise release and package version. Make sure the package corresponds to the affected component; a desktop environment’s “X11” label is not enough to identify the package.
  4. Open the distribution’s official tracker or advisory for the CVE. Find the row for your exact release and read its status and notes. Statuses can differ between releases, and notes may specify that a fix is deferred, the release is unsupported, or an extended-support channel is required.
  5. Compare the installed distribution package with the distribution’s status or fixed threshold. Preserve the full package version, including any epoch, distribution revision, or backport suffix. Do not strip those parts or compare only the upstream version; use the distribution’s own advisory and package-version rules.
  6. Install an available fix through the supported channel, then check again. Use the distribution’s official repository or any required support channel, and query the installed package afterward to confirm the update is present. X.Org says users should obtain X from their distribution vendor; the project does not provide binaries. See the X.Org project page.

How distribution status changes the answer

A CVE assignment does not by itself establish that every Linux system is vulnerable or that the issue presents the same risk in every release. Debian’s FAQ explains that a CVE ID alone does not necessarily mean an issue is a serious threat to a Debian system, and directs readers to the Debian Security FAQ and Debian Security Tracker for status and context.

The same CVE can have different statuses in different releases. For example, Debian’s tracker lists CVE-2026-56000 as vulnerable in bookworm while fixed in trixie, forky, and sid. Treat this as a dated tracker snapshot, not a permanent status: consult the tracker for the current state of your release.

Support channels can also matter. The Ubuntu page for CVE-2024-9632 lists status by Ubuntu release and shows a fix for Ubuntu 18.04 through Ubuntu Pro/ESM. A fix listed for one release or support channel should not be generalized to another.

Read fixed package versions in their distribution context

When a tracker supplies a fixed version, use the complete string and the release it names. Debian’s DSA-6370-1 says the listed X.Org server issues were fixed for Debian trixie in 2:21.1.16-1.3+deb13u3. That is the Debian package threshold for that release, including Debian-specific revision information—not a universal upstream version requirement. See Debian Security Advisory 6370-1.

As another example of the difference between upstream and distribution versions, X.Org’s security index reports that the July 8, 2026 issues were fixed upstream in xorg-server 21.1.24 and xwayland 24.1.13. Those are upstream reference versions, not fixed-package thresholds for every distribution. Check the advisory for your own release before deciding whether an installed package is affected.

What to do if the tracker is unclear

  • If your release has a fixed status, check whether the installed package meets the distribution’s stated threshold, then install the update if needed.
  • If the fix requires extended security maintenance or another support channel, verify that the channel applies to your system and is enabled or available to you.
  • If the release is unsupported, do not treat the absence of a listed fix as proof that the package is safe. Ask the distribution’s security team or vendor support about the release’s status.
  • If no tracker entry exists or the status is unresolved, ask the distribution rather than inferring vulnerability from the CVE title or upstream version alone.

Distribution processes and tracker labels differ. Red Hat describes its security advisories as documenting flaws fixed in Red Hat products and services, with affected-product information and CVE links; use the advisory for the product and release you run. See Red Hat’s security updates documentation.
