Yes—if you configure and use it correctly. Rclone’s crypt remote encrypts file contents on your computer before they are uploaded and decrypts them locally when downloaded. The cloud service stores encrypted objects instead of readable file contents. But rclone is an encryption layer, not a cloud service or a replacement for Dropbox or Google Drive: you still need a storage provider, and you trade some native convenience for control over the encryption workflow.
What rclone crypt changes—and what it does not
Rclone crypt wraps a supported storage remote. When you work through the configured crypt remote, rclone encrypts files before upload and decrypts them after download on your local system. The rclone project describes the data as remaining encrypted at rest in the wrapped remote. Rclone’s crypt documentation explains the workflow.

This is different from simply syncing an ordinary folder with a cloud provider. Files uploaded directly through the provider’s website or app—or through an unencrypted rclone remote—do not become protected by the crypt configuration. Keep the plain remote and the crypt remote distinct, and direct sensitive files through the latter.

Encryption also does not make every part of the workflow private. Your computer must handle plaintext when files are opened; exposed credentials, unlocked devices, and plaintext copies remain risks. Rclone’s configuration file can contain credentials and encryption settings, so protect it separately; rclone documents configuration-file protection in its privacy guidance. Encryption is not a backup: sync can propagate deletions and unwanted changes, so maintain an independent recovery copy when the files matter.

How rclone compares with standard Dropbox and Drive sync
| Question | Rclone crypt over Dropbox or Drive | Standard Dropbox or Drive sync | Google Workspace client-side encryption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the provider read stored file contents? | Files handled through the crypt remote are encrypted before upload. This protects file contents in that workflow, not plaintext copies or an exposed device. | At-rest and in-transit encryption do not, by themselves, mean the provider cannot access content. Dropbox says it does not offer client-side encryption. Dropbox’s security overview and advanced encryption information describe its offerings. Google says Drive content is encrypted in transit and at rest, and describes processing content for features such as spam filtering, malware protection, and per-account search. Google Drive Help | Google says it cannot decrypt files protected by this feature. Availability depends on Workspace eligibility and administrator enablement, and users must verify their identity. Google’s encrypted-files guidance |
| Who manages setup and keys? | You configure rclone and must retain the correct configuration and password, then use the crypt path consistently. | The provider manages the standard sync workflow. The cited standard-storage documentation does not describe user-held content keys for ordinary consumer sync. | The organization’s administrator controls availability; identity verification is required. |
| What happens to previews, editing, and sharing? | Cloud-side objects are encrypted, so do not expect the provider’s ordinary web preview or editing features to work on them as if they were plaintext files. Retrieve and decrypt them through rclone to use the contents. | Native previews, editing, and collaboration work with regular files. | Feature and file-type limitations apply. Google’s cited guidance says Docs, Sheets, and Slides are not yet supported as encrypted files in the described flow. |
| What about local storage? | Rclone crypt is an encryption layer, not a local-storage policy. Local copies depend on how you configure and use rclone. | Drive for desktop offers streaming, which primarily keeps files in the cloud and downloads them when needed, and mirroring, which keeps a full local copy. Google says changes sync across locations in both modes. Drive’s streaming and mirroring guide | Local storage depends on the organization’s and device’s configuration. |
Can I encrypt files before uploading them to Google Drive?
Yes. Configure a Google Drive remote and a crypt remote that wraps it, then send files through the crypt remote. That makes rclone the local encryption and decryption layer; Drive remains the storage and sync backend. Rclone’s crypt documentation covers the encryption setup, while its Google Drive backend guidance covers Drive-specific configuration.
Do not assume that connecting Drive to rclone encrypts everything in your account. Existing files are not retroactively protected merely because you create a crypt remote, and uploads made by Drive’s ordinary app or website do not automatically pass through it. Verify which remote and path a command or workflow uses before placing sensitive files there.

Does Dropbox offer client-side encryption?
Dropbox’s standard encryption is not the same as user-side encryption through rclone. Dropbox describes encryption at rest and says explicitly that it does not offer client-side encryption. That means its standard security statements should not be read as a promise that Dropbox cannot access file contents. See How Dropbox keeps your files secure and Dropbox advanced encryption.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
- 3-year limited warranty
You can use Dropbox as the wrapped storage remote for rclone crypt. In that arrangement, the distinction is the same as with Drive: work through the crypt remote for files that need this protection, and do not send sensitive plaintext through standard Dropbox sync.

Not in the ordinary way through the provider’s web interface. If the provider receives encrypted objects, its native apps generally cannot treat those objects as the original readable documents. Rclone decrypts on download; your local workflow then uses the plaintext file. Plan to have rclone and the right configuration available on every device that needs to read the files.

Filename encryption and filename-encoding choices can also affect usability, path lengths, and compatibility. Rclone’s current crypt and backend documentation should guide those choices; do not assume every provider handles every option identically. Avoid sharing a stored encrypted object as though it were an ordinary document that another person can open in the cloud.
What is the difference between Drive streaming and mirroring?
Streaming and mirroring describe how Drive for desktop keeps files available locally; neither mode is client-side encryption. In streaming, files primarily remain in the cloud and download when needed, with offline access available for selected files. In mirroring, Drive keeps a full local copy as well as the cloud copy, which uses local disk space. Google says changes to streamed or mirrored files sync across locations. See Google’s Drive for desktop guide.
These modes answer a local-storage and availability question, not who can decrypt cloud-stored content. Rclone crypt answers a separate question by encrypting files before upload when the configured crypt path is used.
Quick Recap
When does each approach make sense?
- Choose rclone crypt over a cloud backend if reducing the provider’s access to stored file contents matters more than ordinary cloud previews and hands-off native workflows, and you are prepared to manage configuration, passwords, and recovery.
- Choose standard provider sync if built-in previews, editing, sharing, and simpler setup are more important than client-held encryption of the content.
- Consider Google Workspace client-side encryption if your organization has an eligible Workspace setup and administrator support, and the documented file and feature limitations fit your work. Confirm current availability with the administrator before depending on it.
