Ray Tracing Explained: What It Does in Games and Creative Software

Ray tracing models light, but most real-time games use it for selected effects alongside rasterization. Learn what denoising does and why performance depends on the workload.

Ray tracing models how light travels through a scene, but a game that advertises ray tracing is not necessarily rendering every pixel that way. Most real-time games use a hybrid: rasterization draws much of the scene, while ray tracing adds selected effects such as reflections or shadows. How much it costs in performance—and whether the result looks better—depends on the specific game, settings, hardware, and denoising implementation.

What ray tracing means

Rasterization efficiently converts scene geometry into pixels. Ray tracing instead follows rays through a scene to model aspects of how light interacts with objects. These techniques are not mutually exclusive: an application can use rasterization for most of an image and trace rays only for particular effects.

That distinction matters because “ray tracing” is not a single visual setting with one predictable result. It describes a family of rendering techniques. The effect being traced, the scene, sampling, and implementation all shape the output.

How games use ray tracing

Real-time games commonly use hybrid rendering: rasterization handles much of the scene, and ray tracing supplies chosen effects. Khronos describes this approach as typical for real-time games and identifies reflections, ray-traced shadow-map generation, and asynchronous dynamic light baking as examples. Khronos Group’s Vulkan ray-tracing overview explains the approach.

A game may therefore offer a ray-traced reflection or shadow option without using ray tracing for every part of the frame. The label alone does not tell you which effect is enabled, how it is implemented, or how large its visual and performance impact will be; check the game’s settings and documentation.

Selective ray tracing and path tracing

Selective ray tracing applies rays to chosen effects, such as reflections. Path tracing uses ray-based sampling to approximate broader light transport. The terms are related, but a feature described as ray tracing is not automatically path tracing. Neither label alone guarantees a particular level of realism: the result depends on the scene, implementation, and settings.

Why denoising matters

Tracing only a small number of rays can produce a noisy image. One response is to cast more rays, which requires more computation. Another is denoising: processing the sampled result to reduce visible noise, potentially making an image with fewer rays usable. Khronos discusses denoising and adaptive sampling as optimization techniques in its Vulkan tutorial on denoising and adaptive sampling. NVIDIA also describes denoising as a way to improve ray-traced output and permit fewer rays to be cast in its ray-tracing explainer.

Denoising is part of the rendering tradeoff, not a free improvement. Its quality and cost depend on the algorithm and implementation; denoisers can leave artifacts, and methods that use information from earlier frames can be affected by motion and image history. Image quality and performance also vary with the application, GPU, driver, resolution, scene, and settings.

Does ray tracing make games slower?

Ray-tracing effects add computational work, but there is no single FPS penalty that applies to every game or graphics card. The impact depends on the specific effect, scene, resolution, quality settings, GPU and driver, and the renderer’s sampling and denoising methods. A result from one game or demo cannot reliably predict performance in another workload.

For a useful comparison, look for current tests of the exact game, hardware, resolution, and settings you care about. Compare the same scene and quality conditions, and note whether denoising or other rendering features are enabled. General technology descriptions and vendor demonstrations explain capabilities, but they do not establish neutral, current performance across products.

APIs and graphics hardware

Vulkan ray tracing and Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) are API paths for ray-tracing workloads. NVIDIA OptiX is another API used for CUDA-based applications; NVIDIA describes it as intended for ray-tracing applications using CUDA technology. Khronos’s Vulkan ray-tracing release announcement describes Vulkan’s extension framework and its cross-vendor ecosystem context, including NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.

An API makes a route for developers to build ray-tracing features; it does not mean every application uses the same effects, or that performance is equal across hardware. Likewise, NVIDIA describes its RTX GPUs as having dedicated RT Cores designed for real-time ray-traced experiences. That is a description of NVIDIA’s own technology, not a neutral comparison showing that a particular product is the best choice.

If you are checking whether a system can run a particular feature, consult the application’s requirements and support information, then verify that your GPU and driver meet them. Graphics cards with ray-tracing hardware are relevant to these workloads, but compatibility and performance remain application-specific.

Ray tracing beyond games

Ray tracing is also used in offline production rendering and light-map baking. These workflows can spend longer generating an image or lighting data than a real-time game can spend drawing a frame, so they have different performance constraints. Khronos lists offline rendering and light-map baking among the technique’s uses in its Vulkan overview.

Creative software may use different APIs, hardware paths, denoisers, and quality settings from a game. For a production workload, check the software’s supported hardware and renderer documentation, then seek tests of that application and workflow rather than relying on game benchmarks.

How to judge a ray-tracing claim

  • Identify the workload: Is the claim about a game effect, broader path tracing, offline rendering, or light-map baking?
  • Find out what is traced: A reflection or shadow feature does not mean the entire scene is ray traced.
  • Check the conditions: Useful performance evidence names the application or game, hardware, resolution, settings, and relevant denoising or sampling options.
  • Separate capability from results: API support and hardware features establish what may be possible, not how a particular application performs.
  • Look at the image as well as speed: Noise, denoising artifacts, and the visual benefit of the effect matter alongside frame rate or render time.
