What changes with Gen 3?
A smaller camera opening, not more megapixels
Both generations are listed with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, so Gen 3’s headline distinction is not a higher megapixel count. Ray-Ban says the camera and LED opening is 36% smaller than Gen 2. That may appeal if you care about how conspicuous the camera hardware looks, but it does not establish a difference in image quality.

Video modes and capture
Ray-Ban lists 3K Ultra HD video at 30 frames per second for Gen 3, alongside 1080p and 720p options. The comparison also places Gen 2 in the same broad 3K video class. The published specifications do not establish a tested image-quality advantage between generations.

More microphones and a dedicated shortcut
Gen 3 has six microphones, compared with five listed for Gen 2, and Ray-Ban describes advanced wind-noise reduction on Gen 3. This is a hardware and feature difference, not proof of better call or recording quality in everyday conditions.
Gen 3 also adds an assignable action button. Ray-Ban says it can provide quick access to Meta AI or a favorite feature, alongside the power slider, temple touchpad and capture button. The comparison materials do not establish an equivalent assignable-button feature for Gen 2, but that does not mean Gen 2 lacks other ways to activate functions.

Battery claims
Ray-Ban lists up to nine hours of use per charge for Gen 3 and up to eight hours for Gen 2. Its case figures are up to 50 additional hours for Gen 3 and up to 48 for Gen 2. These are “up to” manufacturer claims, not guarantees or independent measurements; actual runtime varies with use.
Price, frames and prescription lenses
The official US listing shows Gen 3 starting at $449. Gen 2 prices vary by frame and configuration; displayed examples include $379 and $499 for prescription-oriented Optics models. Those figures are not a like-for-like generation price comparison, and listings or inventory can change.

Gen 3 is shown with Clear, Sun and Transitions lens options, with prescription availability. Gen 2 Optics models are described as designed for prescription wearers, and lens options vary by model. If you need prescription lenses, compare the exact frame and prescription configuration, including the lenses included, rather than choosing on generation name alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which generation should you choose?
Choose Gen 3 if its specific upgrades matter
- You want the smaller camera and LED opening Ray-Ban lists.
- You value the additional microphone and the stated wind-noise reduction feature.
- You want an assignable action button for quick access to a function.
- You prefer the longer battery figures Ray-Ban claims, while understanding that real runtime depends on use.
Consider Gen 2 if its exact model fits better
- You find a frame, lens or prescription configuration that suits you better than the Gen 3 options available to you.
- The specific Gen 3 hardware changes are not important enough to outweigh the price and configuration of the Gen 2 model you are considering.
Before buying, check the live US listing for the exact frame, lens type and prescription configuration. The published comparison supports a feature-by-feature decision, but does not establish an independent head-to-head winner for image quality, call performance or everyday battery life.
