One naming clarification matters: Nova is a style in Meta’s separate Meta Glasses collection, not a Ray-Ban Meta generation. The comparison below is Gen 3 versus Gen 2.
What changed between Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and Gen 3?
Meta announced Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 in September 2026. The table compares the manufacturer’s launch claims and listed specifications; it is not an independent test.

| Feature | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | Up to 8 hours of typical use, per Meta’s September 2025 announcement; charging case said to add 48 hours. | Up to 9 hours, per Meta’s September 2026 announcement; Ray-Ban lists the case as providing up to 50 additional hours. | Meta claims an extra hour for the glasses. Actual runtime depends on use and conditions. |
| Camera and video | 12 MP camera and 3K Ultra HD video were among the Gen 2 launch features. | 12 MP ultra-wide camera and 3K Ultra HD video; Ray-Ban lists 3K at 30 fps, 1080p+ at 30 or 60 fps, and 720p+ at 120 fps. | The headline 3K resolution is not exclusive to Gen 3. Gen 3’s listed modes give more detail about available capture options. |
| Microphones | Five-microphone array listed by Ray-Ban. | Six-microphone array listed by Meta and Ray-Ban. | Gen 3 adds one microphone. Meta says the array cuts more than 90% of background noise; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified comparison. |

Battery: a modest claimed increase
Meta’s stated maximum rises from up to eight hours of typical use for Gen 2 to up to nine hours for Gen 3. The case figures also differ: Meta said Gen 2’s case added 48 hours, while Ray-Ban lists up to 50 additional hours for Gen 3. These are company-provided figures, not a promise of a particular owner’s daily runtime. Streaming, recording, calls, and other use can affect how long a charge lasts.
Camera: more capture detail, but not a generational resolution jump
Both generations launched with 3K video, and Gen 3 retains a 12 MP camera. Ray-Ban’s Gen 3 specification page lists several resolution and frame-rate combinations, including 3K at 30 fps and 720p+ at 120 fps, as well as stabilization and capture modes. Those options may matter if you want to choose between resolution and frame rate, but the headline 3K figure alone does not make Gen 3 a clear camera-resolution upgrade over Gen 2.

Microphones and controls: the more distinct everyday changes
Six microphones instead of five
Ray-Ban lists five microphones for Gen 2 and six for Gen 3. Meta attributes more than 90% background-noise reduction to Gen 3’s array and says it is intended to improve calls and voice commands, including in windy or crowded settings. That percentage is Meta’s performance claim; the sources cited here do not provide an independent comparative measurement.
A customizable action button
Gen 3 adds a customizable action button alongside its capture control. Meta describes it as a way to reach Meta AI quickly. If you use voice assistance often, an additional dedicated control could be useful, but the available specifications do not show how much faster or easier it is in practice.

Fit, styles, and the Nova naming mix-up
Meta describes Gen 3 as slimmer and says its temple tips can be professionally adjusted for fit. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not a guarantee that the newer frame will feel better on every face. Try the fit if possible, particularly if you plan to wear the glasses for long stretches.

Its September 2025 Gen 2 announcement listed Wayfarer, Skyler, and Headliner. In that same 2026 announcement, Meta introduced Capri and Nova as styles in the separate Meta Glasses collection. Nova is not another name for Gen 3, and it should not be treated as a Gen 2-versus-Gen 3 model.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 worth upgrading to?
For a Gen 2 owner, the cited specifications support a conditional decision, not an across-the-board recommendation. Consider Gen 3 if an extra claimed hour between charges, the additional microphone, the customizable action button, adjustable temple tips, or one of the newly announced styles addresses something you want. If your Gen 2 meets your needs and you are mainly hoping for a major camera-resolution improvement, the shared 3K headline gives little reason on its own to rush to upgrade.
