A RIP may be built into a printer or supplied as separate software or hardware; it is a processing stage, not necessarily a separate product you need to buy.
What does a raster image processor do?
A design or document describes page content and layout. In a print workflow, that description may be supplied in a page description language (PDL), which tells the output system what to place on the page. The RIP interprets that information and rasterizes it: it turns text, lines, curves, and other content into a grid of output data the printer can mark on paper. Adobe describes the RIP as taking over after the PDL file has been sent for printing (Adobe Embedded Print Engine FAQ).

Put simply, the RIP translates a description of what a page should look like into the dot or pixel pattern the particular output device can render. The resulting raster is device-oriented; it is not just a picture preview of the document.

Where does the RIP fit in the printing process?
- The document is prepared. A design or application file contains text, images, and layout instructions.
- Page content is described for output. A workflow sends the job in a format or PDL the print system can process. PostScript and PDF are common examples, although accepted inputs and any intermediate conversion vary by system.
- The RIP interprets and rasterizes the job. It converts the described page elements into raster output appropriate to the printer or other output device.
- The output device renders the raster. The printer uses the raster data to produce marks on the chosen medium.
The precise sequence and supported formats depend on the printer and print system. Some modern print engines process PDF natively; other workflows may convert or process a file differently (Adobe Embedded Print Engine FAQ; HP’s overview of RIP software).
#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for: Technical line drawings, renders requiring precise, accurate line-quality and crisp text, posters, maps, and professional sewing patterns.
- Media Sizes: Up to 24-inch wide media rolls (large format), and up to 13-inch by 19-inch sheets (wide format) using the optional automatic sheet feeder accessory.
- Media Handling: Sheet feed, roll feed, automatic horizontal cutter.
- Simple & Cost Effective: Print multi-size projects automatically, without needing to manually switching the media source. Cost saving efficiencies like using 95% less ink for routine maintenance vs. other competitor plotter printers.
- Simplify Printing with Included HP Click Software: Save time, ink, and paper waste with PDF error checking, alerts, and auto-nesting. Predefine your print settings and easily print files (PDF, JPEG, TIFF, DWF, HP-GL/2, PNG) by simply dragging and dropping them. HP Click Driver is integrated with your workflow. Print directly from your design and common CAD applications.
Which functions can a RIP handle besides rasterization?
Depending on the implementation and workflow, a RIP may also manage color and fonts, handle transparency, or perform halftoning—the conversion of tone into printable dot patterns. These are possible additional functions, not a feature set shared by every RIP. Adobe lists color and font management, transparency handling, and halftoning among RIP capabilities (Adobe Embedded Print Engine FAQ).
Rasterization is the core idea: interpreting page content and producing raster data. Other print operations may be integrated with that work, but they should not be assumed without checking the documentation for the particular printer and RIP.

Is a RIP software, hardware, or part of a printer?
It can be any of these. A printer may include its own RIP; a workflow may use separate RIP software; or a dedicated hardware setup may process jobs. HP describes third-party RIP solutions for printers, including large-format devices, and notes that hardware RIPs can run on a dedicated workstation or PC (HP’s overview of RIP software).

These arrangements are different ways to provide the processing stage, not different definitions of rasterization. For a particular setup, check the printer’s documentation for supported input formats, the required output path, and whether RIP functions are already integrated.

When might a separate RIP matter?
Some large-format workflows use a separate RIP for job control, scheduling, or handling memory-intensive graphics and CAD files. HP identifies these as potential reasons to use one, but that does not mean a separate RIP will improve every job’s speed or quality. The benefit depends on the printer, files, and overall workflow (HP’s overview of RIP software).
For a routine print job, the fact that a printer uses a RIP does not by itself mean you need to install or purchase another program. First establish whether the printer already has the required processing and whether your workflow needs capabilities beyond its built-in support.
