Raspberry Pi vs. Used Mini PC: Which Is Better for a Low-Cost Home Server?

A Raspberry Pi suits some compact, focused server builds; a used mini PC may be a better buy when its exact specs and complete-system price fit your workload.

Neither a Raspberry Pi nor a used mini PC is automatically the cheaper or better home server. A Raspberry Pi can make sense for a compact, low-power, single-purpose setup—or when you need GPIO. A used mini PC can be the stronger fit when a specific machine offers the processor compatibility, memory, storage, and ports your services require for a good complete-system price. Compare actual configurations, and measure power at the wall if 24/7 electricity use matters.

Start with the server you need to run

List the services you plan to host before choosing hardware: for example, a lightweight file share, a small web app, a home-automation service, or several services running together. Then check the software’s supported operating systems and processor architectures, its memory and storage requirements, and whether it needs features such as media transcoding or virtualization.

The cited comparison of a Raspberry Pi 5 and an Intel N100 mini PC describes those particular example platforms: the Pi 5 uses a four-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, while the N100 is a four-core Alder Lake-N processor. That comparison can help frame an Arm-versus-x86 decision, but an N100 is not a stand-in for every older used mini PC. Check the specifications of the exact machine you are considering and confirm that your intended software supports its architecture.

Compare complete systems, not category labels

A Raspberry Pi board is only part of a usable server. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance says a system needs boot media and an appropriate power supply; a case is optional, but can protect the board. Add any storage, adapters, or other accessories your setup requires before comparing costs.

A used mini PC listing may include some or all of its memory, storage, power adapter, and other accessories. Verify what is actually included, and account for likely replacements or missing parts. The total cost depends on the exact Pi build or PC listing—not simply on whether the device is called a board or a mini PC.

Comparison point Raspberry Pi Used mini PC
Upfront cost Include the board, suitable power supply, boot media, and any needed case, storage, or expansion. Check the exact listing price, included parts, condition, and likely replacement needs.
Processor and software Confirm that the server software supports the Pi’s processor architecture and operating system. Check the exact processor and software support; used mini PCs vary widely, and an N100 comparison does not describe every model.
Memory and storage Choose a configuration and storage arrangement that meet the workload’s needs. Verify installed RAM, storage type and capacity, and upgrade options on the specific machine.
Connections and expansion Check networking, USB, storage connections, display needs, and whether GPIO or a HAT is useful. Inspect the exact ports and storage interfaces; do not assume they are the same across models.
Condition and support Consider cooling, accessories, and replacement parts for the chosen setup. Assess wear, firmware, cooling, replacement parts, and the seller’s return terms.

Do not confuse power-supply capacity with power use

Raspberry Pi’s official setup instructions recommend a 5 V, 5 A supply for Raspberry Pi 5. With a 5 V, 3 A supply, peripheral current is limited to 600 mA. Those figures describe the supply recommendation and peripheral limit, not the board’s continuous consumption: a 5 V, 5 A rating does not mean the Pi constantly draws 25 W. Connected USB devices and storage can also change system draw.

Raspberry Pi documentation lists Raspberry Pi 5 off-state consumption at around 1 W to 1.4 W by default, and around 0.01 W with a configurable setting. These are off-state figures, not active server idle-power measurements, so they cannot establish what a running home server will use.

Measure power if electricity cost is part of the decision

The cited sources do not establish a matched, general-purpose idle-power comparison between a Raspberry Pi 5 and used mini PCs. To compare your candidates, use a wall-power meter and test each system with equivalent networking and attached storage. Record both idle draw and draw during a representative workload; include the drives and peripherals you expect to leave connected.

To estimate ongoing electricity expense, use the measured consumption, your local electricity tariff, and the number of hours you expect the server to run. A category-wide figure would be misleading because configurations and workloads differ.

Use current local prices, not launch figures

Raspberry Pi listed launch prices of $60 for the 4GB Raspberry Pi 5 and $80 for the 8GB version in 2023. Those are historical launch prices, not current retail quotes. Tom’s Hardware also reported example Pi and mini PC configurations and prices on January 6, 2026; those dated examples illustrate how market prices vary and should not be treated as current offers.

For a decision today, compare current local listings and the complete cost of each usable system, including any required accessories or replacement parts. For used hardware, factor in its condition and the seller’s return terms rather than judging by the listing price alone.

Choose by fit, then verify the exact machine

  • Consider a Raspberry Pi for a light, focused server where its compact size, low-power design, or GPIO is valuable, provided the required software supports the platform.
  • Consider a used mini PC when a particular unit has the compatible processor, sufficient memory and storage, and necessary ports at a compelling total price.
  • Compare power empirically if always-on electricity use could change your choice: measure the complete systems under comparable conditions.

Raspberry Pi Documentation describes the device as commonly used either as a desktop computer or as a headless (remote) computer. A headless setup can suit a server managed over the network, but the right hardware still depends on the services you intend to run.
