Quantum batteries remain a research concept demonstrated on specialized platforms, while solid-state batteries are an emerging battery technology facing practical manufacturing and scale-up hurdles.
What the two terms mean
Quantum batteries
A quantum battery is a system in which researchers study how energy can be stored and released through controllable quantum states and interactions. The research asks whether quantum effects—such as coherence, entanglement, or collective behavior—can improve measures such as charging power or energy transfer. It does not mean an ordinary battery is a quantum battery merely because quantum physics helps explain its materials. A 2024 Reviews of Modern Physics colloquium surveys theory, experimental work, and open-system issues, while describing a field with promising implementations and preliminary results: the 2024 review.
Solid-state batteries
A solid-state battery remains an electrochemical battery. Its defining feature is a solid lithium-ion-conducting electrolyte in place of a liquid electrolyte. The solid electrolyte and electrode materials determine how a particular design performs; the label alone does not guarantee a specific level of safety, energy density, cost, or lifespan. Reviews discuss possible benefits alongside unresolved technical and manufacturing problems: a 2025 perspective in the Journal of Power Sources and a 2025 review in the Journal of Energy Storage.
How they differ
| Question | Quantum battery | Solid-state battery |
|---|---|---|
| What does the name describe? | Energy storage and charging behavior in a controllable quantum system. | Electrochemical architecture using a solid electrolyte. |
| Main research question | Can quantum effects or collective interactions improve energy transfer, capacity, or charging power? | Can solid electrolytes and compatible electrodes deliver practical performance, safety, lifetime, and manufacturability? |
| Evidence and development | Theory and proof-of-principle experiments on specific platforms. | Materials research, prototypes, and industrialization work; significant scale-up challenges remain. |
| Useful measures | Charging power and its scaling, stored energy, capacity definition, losses, stability, and the platform used. | Energy and power density, operating conditions, cycle life, safety, manufacturing yield, cost, and scale. |
| Practical takeaway | An active research area, not a consumer battery category. | A developing electrochemical technology, not a universal drop-in replacement. |
There is no standardized head-to-head test that makes a universal performance ranking fair: the terms describe different things, the technologies are at different stages, and the relevant measures are not interchangeable.

What quantum-battery experiments have demonstrated
Capacity measured on an optical platform
A 2024 experiment used two-photon states in an optical platform to verify a quantum-battery capacity measure and examined its relationship to entropy, coherence, and entanglement. That is evidence about a defined property in a specialized quantum system—not a demonstration of a consumer-scale device storing electricity for a phone or car. See the 2024 Cell Reports Physical Science study.
Charging behavior in material platforms
A 2025 Advanced Materials perspective surveys candidate platforms including organic microcavities, quantum wells and dots, perovskites, and superconductors. It discusses experimental superextensive charging in organic microcavities. In that context, the result means a single cavity containing many molecules may charge in less time than an equivalent set of separately charged single-molecule cavities. It is not evidence of greater everyday battery capacity or faster electric-vehicle charging. The perspective describes materials research for quantum batteries as early-stage: the 2025 article.
A 2026 Nature Reviews Physics perspective likewise presents quantum batteries as an emerging field spanning fundamental theory, possible quantum advantages, proof-of-principle architectures, and scalability challenges: the 2026 perspective.

- SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
- ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
- QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
- DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
- FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.
What solid-state batteries may offer—and what remains difficult
Replacing a liquid electrolyte with a solid one is the architectural change; practical advantages are design-dependent prospects, not promises that apply to every cell. Researchers continue to work on:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Electrolyte and electrode compatibility: materials must work together effectively.
- Interfaces: the boundaries between electrolyte and electrodes need to support reliable operation.
- Processing and throughput: production methods must work efficiently at industrial scale.
- Long-term performance: cells must retain useful performance over operation.
- Cost: materials and manufacturing processes affect whether a design can be produced economically.
The 2025 Journal of Power Sources perspective notes that polymer-electrolyte concepts have entered niche markets, while a wider industrial-scale transition remains difficult. That does not establish broad availability of solid-state cells for consumer electronics or electric vehicles.
The 2025 Journal of Energy Storage review estimates fabrication costs above $100/kWh for the solid-state designs it surveys, associating that estimate with material-processing costs and low-throughput manufacturing. It is a review-level estimate for the designs and manufacturing context covered—not a universal current price, a retail price, or a quotation for every solid-state chemistry. The same review says that, in its assessment, room-temperature solid-state batteries combining high energy and high power density had not yet been demonstrated.

The 5,000mAh cell gives a modern iPhone roughly one full top-up, and you can charge wired and wireless at the same time.
- TITANIUM SHELL, BUILT TO LAST: A titanium-reinforced shell resists dents and drops, and titanium's high thermal conductivity helps draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it at the surface during charging. It's premium protection that keeps the Air tough and travel-ready in a remarkably slim form.
- CCC CERTIFIED FOR TRAVEL: CCC certified for battery compliance and travel in China, with FCC, CE and UKCA listings for other regions. Built-in circuit safeguards cover overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short circuits. Magnetic charging suits MagSafe iPhones or a thin compatible case; for Pixel and other Android phones, use a magnetic case or the 20W USB-C port.
Does “solid-state quantum battery” mean the same thing?
No. “Solid-state” can describe the materials or platform used to build a quantum-battery experiment; “quantum battery” describes the energy-storage concept and behavior being investigated. A quantum battery made using solid materials does not make every solid-state electrochemical battery a quantum battery. A 2026 perspective covers quantum batteries as an emerging research area, while the 2025 materials perspective surveys possible material platforms: Nature Reviews Physics and Advanced Materials.
What this means if you are choosing a battery
These terms do not identify two consumer products you can compare as drop-in alternatives. Quantum-battery demonstrations concern specialized experimental platforms, and the evidence cited here does not establish a general-purpose consumer device. Solid-state describes a developing electrochemical design category; whether a specific cell is available, compatible, or suitable depends on the product and its documented specifications. Compare actual products on their stated chemistry, operating conditions, energy and power, cycle life, safety evidence, and availability—not on either label alone.
