Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchBack up important files first, then check whether the Pi detects the card, review system logs for repeated storage errors, and inspect the filesystem while it is unmounted. These steps can reveal current faults; for most ordinary microSD cards, they do not show a reliable percentage of remaining life.
What a health check can—and cannot—tell you
There is an important difference between finding a problem that is happening now and predicting when flash memory will wear out. Boot diagnostics, Linux logs, filesystem checks, and read/write verification can help identify detection failures, errors, or corruption. A normal boot or clean filesystem check is not proof that a card has substantial life remaining.

Some specific cards expose vendor-specific health information, but that is not a universal feature of microSD cards. Do not assume that generic SMART tools or a Raspberry Pi’s built-in card slot can report a wear percentage.

Back up before testing
If the Pi still starts, copy important files to another device or a network location before running tests. If the card is unstable, avoid unnecessary writes and shut the Pi down cleanly before removing it when possible. When cloning or imaging a card, verify the source and destination carefully so you do not overwrite the only copy of your data.

Check whether the Pi detects the card
On Raspberry Pi 4 and later flagship models, boot diagnostics can show SD-card detection status and partition information on an HDMI display. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes powering down, removing boot media, and powering on to bring up the diagnostics screen. It helps narrow down boot-media detection problems, but it is not a flash-wear meter. Similar boot symptoms can also result from configuration problems. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

Green LED flash codes can also indicate where startup failed. Check the documentation for your exact model; for example, seven short green flashes indicate that the kernel image was not found. That is a boot-stage clue, not a direct diagnosis of worn NAND flash. Raspberry Pi configuration documentation

If the Pi is running, review recent kernel messages for repeated card, I/O, or filesystem errors. These commands search the current boot’s kernel log and the kernel ring buffer; output varies by Raspberry Pi OS release and kernel:

- Up To 48MB/s Read Speed
- 10-year warranty
- Easily Back Up Files With "SanDisk Memory Zone" App

sudo dmesg -T | grep -Ei 'mmc|I/O error|read-only|ext4|FAT'
sudo journalctl -k -b | grep -Ei 'mmc|I/O error|read-only|ext4|FAT'
Repeated I/O errors, controller timeouts, filesystem errors, or an unexpected read-only remount are warning signs. One message by itself does not prove the card is failing. Correlate it with reproducible symptoms and, if practical, try the card in another reader or host computer to help distinguish card problems from issues with the Pi’s slot, power, or configuration.
Check the filesystem offline
A filesystem checker can find structural damage, but repair tools should not be run against a mounted filesystem. Checking a live root partition is unsafe and can produce misleading results. Repair can also change filesystem metadata, so preserve a backup first when the data matters.

- READY TO BOOT, NO FLASHING REQUIRED: This card arrives with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS already installed, so you can skip downloading images, flashing software, and checking checksums. Just insert it, power on, and go.
- WORKS ACROSS THE RASPBERRY PI LINEUP: Compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5, 500, 400, 4B, 3B, 3B+, 3A+, Zero 2 W, and Compute Module models - a great fit whether you're starting a new build or upgrading an old one.
- U3 / CLASS 10 SPEED: A solid speed rating for responsive everyday use - booting the desktop, running apps, coding, browsing, and general Pi projects all feel smooth and reliable.
- 64GB OF ROOM TO WORK: Plenty of space for the operating system plus your software, files, and projects - with headroom left over as your builds grow.
- THE EASY WAY TO GET STARTED: Perfect for beginners who want a working Pi out of the box, and a real time-saver for pros. Includes a printed instruction sheet with a setup guide and a link to a walkthrough video.
- Identify the partitions. Run
lsblkto see the card’s device and partition names. - Unmount the target filesystem. Shut down the Pi and connect the card to another computer, or otherwise make sure the specific partition is unmounted.
- Use the appropriate checker. Linux ext filesystems are commonly checked with
fsck; a FAT boot partition needs a suitable FAT checker. Follow the tool’s instructions for the partition you identified.
Filesystem damage can follow abrupt power loss as well as storage trouble. A clean check says nothing definitive about remaining write endurance.

Use write-and-read tests cautiously
A full-capacity write-and-read verification can expose counterfeit capacity or unreliable blocks, but it overwrites data and subjects the card to substantial writes. Use it only after backing up the contents or when the card is expendable, and carefully confirm the selected device. Raspberry Pi Imager’s write-and-verify workflow checks whether an image was written as expected; it does not estimate the card’s remaining life. Raspberry Pi setup tutorial

Do not treat a speed result as a health score. Performance depends on the card, reader, interface, filesystem, workload, and test method. A slowdown may justify more investigation, but it does not by itself diagnose flash wear.
When card-specific health data is available
A guide describes querying a SMART-like block and card-life data from Transcend 430T and 450I microSD models using a modified mmc-utils build on a Raspberry Pi. That procedure is limited to the named card models and a custom tool flow; it does not establish that ordinary microSD cards expose comparable metrics through a Pi’s native slot or a generic USB reader. Confirm the exact card model, reader/interface compatibility, utility support, and vendor documentation before relying on a reported percentage. RaspberryPi-SDcard-SMARTQuery guide
When to replace the card
Treat the card as untrusted if problems recur, especially after checking with another reader or host where practical. Preserve what data you can, then replace the card and restore from a tested backup rather than relying on one clean check.
- Repeated I/O errors or controller timeouts
- Persistent filesystem corruption or failed read/write verification
- Unexpected read-only behavior not explained by configuration
- Recurring boot failures that follow the card to another reader or Pi
For workloads that write constantly, USB mass-storage boot may be an alternative on supported models. Bootloader, device compatibility, and power requirements matter, so check the Raspberry Pi documentation before changing storage. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation
