A refurbished mini PC can match the cost of a fully equipped Raspberry Pi 5 and offer a more capable general-purpose desktop—but that is not a universal price rule. Compare complete systems, not a bare Pi board against a ready-to-use PC, then choose according to the work: x86 compatibility and included storage favor the mini PC; GPIO, camera connections, HATs and low power favor the Pi.
When can a mini PC cost about the same as a Raspberry Pi?
Price parity is possible when the comparison includes everything needed to use the Pi as a desktop or server: power supply, enclosure, storage, cooling and, for an NVMe drive, an adapter or HAT. A mini PC listing may already include memory, SSD, power adapter and an operating system, but check rather than assume.

One dated U.S. comparison illustrates the point. On January 5, 2026, Jeff Geerling priced a GMKtec N100 mini PC with 16GB RAM and 512GB NVMe at $246.99, versus $246.95 for a similarly specified Pi 5 build with a case, cooler, power adapter and other listed components. Those figures describe that particular configuration and date, not a current market average or a typical refurbished price. See Geerling’s itemized comparison; Tom’s Hardware also summarizes the comparison and other examples.
Raspberry Pi’s announced U.S. board prices in 2025 were $45 for the 1GB Pi 5, $55 for 2GB, $70 for 4GB, $95 for 8GB and $145 for 16GB. These are board prices—not a complete system cost or a guarantee of what a retailer charges now. Raspberry Pi’s announcement lists the models and prices.

What does each platform do better?
| Decision | Raspberry Pi 5 | Refurbished mini PC |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase cost | Add the board, power, case, storage, cooling and any adapter needed for the intended setup. | Verify the exact CPU, RAM, SSD, power adapter, operating system, condition and warranty in the listing. |
| Software and workload | ARM system suited to Pi-specific projects and light services. | x86 system generally better suited to broad desktop software compatibility and workloads that benefit from a PC-class platform. |
| Hardware projects | 40-pin GPIO, camera connections and HAT ecosystem are built-in advantages. | Usually lacks built-in GPIO; direct hardware projects may need external interfaces or a separate controller. |
| Power | Low draw can be valuable for a light, always-on role. | Consumption varies by exact machine and workload; check measurements for the model you are considering. |
| Condition and support | New boards and accessories are covered by their respective seller or manufacturer terms. | Refurbishment standards, warranty and return terms depend on the seller and listing. |
A recent comparison describes Intel N100/N150 systems as faster than a Pi 5 in many disciplines, while noting the Pi’s lower power draw and GPIO as key strengths. Its benchmark and wall-power figures belong to that comparison’s test conditions; they should not be treated as universal results for every refurbished PC. Read the N100/N150 and Pi 5 comparison.

Which should you buy for your workload?
Choose a mini PC for a general desktop or heavier home-lab work
Look for a mini PC when you need conventional x86 software compatibility, want a ready-built system with storage included, or expect a workload to benefit from a PC-class processor and memory configuration. “Mini PC” does not guarantee a particular performance level, though: compare the exact processor, RAM and storage rather than relying on the category name.
Keep the Pi for electronics and board-level projects
The Pi makes more sense when your project needs its 40-pin GPIO, camera connections or HAT ecosystem. A mini PC without those interfaces may require extra hardware or a separate controller, adding complexity and cost that a desktop price comparison misses.

Weigh power for an always-on service
Lower power draw can make the Pi attractive for light services that run continuously. In LinuxLinks’ 2025 comparison, the estimated Pi saving was about £6–£7 per year under an assumption of eight hours a day of light use. That estimate reflects its test setup and tariff context; it does not establish the saving for a 24/7 server, a different electricity rate or another mini PC. For a specific machine, use measured idle and workload draw with your own electricity price.
How to check a refurbished mini PC before buying
- Confirm the configuration. Check the processor model and generation, RAM capacity and whether it can be upgraded, and SSD type and capacity.
- Check what is included. Verify the power adapter, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, video ports and operating system are part of the exact listing. Do not assume a low-priced system includes an SSD or Wi-Fi, or has a current supported operating system.
- Read the condition and terms. Look for cosmetic grade, return window and warranty length. “Refurbished” alone does not define the inspection standard or support you receive.
- Compare complete, same-date costs. For the Pi, total the components needed for your intended setup. For the PC, include any missing parts or required upgrades. Compare equivalent memory and storage where they matter to your workload.
Terms vary by seller and program. Lenovo says eligible devices in its Certified Refurbished program use original Lenovo parts and carry a one-year warranty; that statement applies to the certified program, not refurbished devices generally. Check Lenovo’s certified-program details. Dell’s refurbished store shows configuration and cosmetic-grade details on its listings, but stock and prices are specific to each listing. Is switching away from Raspberry Pi the right move?
For a desktop replacement or a general-purpose machine, a refurbished mini PC may deliver more capability for a similar total cost, especially when its RAM and SSD are already included. For electronics projects, direct GPIO work or a light service where low power matters, the Pi remains a distinct tool rather than an inferior version of a mini PC. Check live prices and exact listing terms before deciding: the available evidence shows that parity can happen, not that every refurbished PC costs the same as every Pi setup.
