It is not needed to jailbreak the Kindle, and it does not automatically sync reading progress, notes, or highlights. The Pi’s role is that of a networked computer; the Kindle needs compatible jailbreak software and an app such as KOReader.
1. Keep a home library host available
A Raspberry Pi can run without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse and be managed remotely over a network. Raspberry Pi’s official getting-started documentation calls this a headless setup and covers network access and remote management.

That makes a Pi a practical place to keep a home ebook-library service available while you use the Kindle elsewhere in the house. Calibre-on-Pi has been described in a third-party guide, but that guide dates to 2019 and is not current installation guidance. This does not establish a ready-made or verified Calibre-Web deployment; choose and configure a library service separately.
2. Send books over local Wi-Fi with KOReader and Calibre
KOReader documents a Calibre plugin that can receive documents through Calibre’s wireless device connection. In this workflow, Calibre and the reader need suitable connectivity on the same local network. See KOReader’s Calibre documentation for the distinction between wireless transfers and transfers made through a USB-connected device.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
This is useful when the goal is to send a selected book without plugging in a cable. It is a transfer path, not proof that a Pi-hosted library will automatically appear on every Kindle or that reading state will follow the book. The devices, network, Calibre configuration, and KOReader setup all matter.
3. Use SSH or SCP if you prefer a direct transfer
For readers comfortable with command-line tools, a community-maintained guide describes transferring ebooks to a jailbroken Kindle running KOReader with SSH/SCP. This can provide another way to copy a file over the network, but it is less guided than a Calibre workflow.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
The guide notes practical details such as the Kindle’s wake state, IP address, port, and destination folder. A sleeping device, changed network address, or incorrect path can interrupt the transfer. Treat this as an optional technical route, not plug-and-play behavior: KOReader Wireless Ebook Transfer via SSH / SCP.

The Pi does not add reader features to the Kindle; those come from the software installed on the Kindle. KOReader lists support for Calibre metadata and wireless transfer, OPDS browsing, plugins, SSH, FTP, and reading customization. The project describes it as “An ebook reader application supporting PDF, DjVu, EPUB, FB2 and many more formats, running on Cervantes, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook and Android devices.” See the KOReader project page for the software’s documented features and supported platforms.

Vilros Pi 4 Compatible Power Supply with Inline on/off switch (power supply color may vary white/black) 5. Micro HDMI to Standard HDMI cable (5ft) 6. Micro SD to USB adapter to reflash card if desired 7. Neoprene Storage Bag to store all parts when not in use 8. Set of 4 Heatsinks 9. Vilros QuickStart Guide instruction booklet for Pi 4
- PASSIVE & ACTIVE COOLING: The included case is well-vented and the kit also includes a set of heatsinks with thermal stickers for easy application and a pre-installed fan to keep the board cool in any use.
- CONVENIENT ACCESSORIES: The power supply features an inline on/off switch neoprene bag that holds and protects all the parts when not in use and the QuickStart guide is updated and written for Raspberry Pi 4.
- IMPORTANT: Kit does NOT include Keyboard, Mouse or Monitor
Combining a networked home host with these reader-side features can create a flexible way to manage and fetch books. But the specific combination depends on configuration, and the available sources do not establish automatic synchronization of progress, notes, or highlights across Kindle, phone, or other reading apps.
5. Make a small, remotely managed home project
A Pi can be tucked away as a home service host once it is configured. Raspberry Pi’s official setup guidance covers boot media, network access, headless access, and selecting a power supply compatible with the model. Most models use a microSD card as boot media; exact setup requirements depend on the board and operating system.

Before building around it, consider the parts of the setup that affect reliability:
- Board and workload: choose hardware for the library service and other tasks you actually intend to run; this evidence does not compare current Pi models or performance.
- Storage and power: use appropriate boot storage and a power supply compatible with the chosen model.
- Network and remote access: configure the Pi to join your home network and enable a remote-management option if it will be headless.
- Availability: the Pi needs to be powered on and reachable when you want to use a service hosted on it.
Raspberry Pi’s official getting-started guide explains the setup options. The Pi itself does not jailbreak a Kindle; Kindle compatibility and installation are separate questions.

Check Kindle compatibility before building the workflow
Jailbreak and KOReader instructions vary by exact Kindle model, variant, firmware, and jailbreak route. KOReader’s Kindle installation page describes different paths for different jailbreak and firmware situations, including experimental KPM installation where applicable. It is not a universal procedure, and no specific reader’s compatibility is established here. Confirm current device-specific guidance before changing the Kindle’s software.
Choose the transfer route that fits your setup
| Workflow | What it offers | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Calibre wireless device connection | A documented way for KOReader to receive documents from Calibre over a local network. | Compatible KOReader and Calibre configuration, plus suitable local network connectivity. |
| SSH/SCP | A direct file-copy option for readers comfortable with command-line transfer. | Network and SSH details, a reachable Kindle, and correct transfer settings and folder. |
Choose the Calibre route if you want a library-oriented workflow; consider SSH/SCP if you are comfortable diagnosing connection and file-path issues. Either way, a Pi is useful as a host only when the service and network are configured for the reader’s actual devices.
