Choose Raspberry Pi Connect when you need to reach a supported Raspberry Pi OS device for screen sharing, remote shell, or remote updates. Choose Chrome Remote Desktop when you want Google’s documented unattended computer access or temporary support sessions and can install a supported host. Both provide browser-mediated remote access, but they serve different workflows; their published privacy explanations also differ in detail.
How the two services differ
| Area | Raspberry Pi Connect | Chrome Remote Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Supported devices running Raspberry Pi OS | General computer access and remote support |
| Remote functions | Screen sharing, remote shell, and remote updates | Unattended computer access and temporary support sessions |
| Sign-in and access | Link a supported Pi OS device to a Raspberry Pi ID, then select it through Connect in a browser | Configure a host, then use a PIN for unattended access; use a temporary code for a support session |
| Published privacy detail | Detailed account of encryption, connection routing, and metadata retention | States sessions are fully encrypted and discloses anonymized network-delay and session-duration data collection |
| Individual cost in cited official materials | Listed as free on Raspberry Pi’s Connect product page accessed October 7, 2026 | No price stated on the cited Google product and help pages |
Connect’s feature set is oriented around Raspberry Pi OS, while Chrome Remote Desktop’s documented workflows center on accessing a computer or helping someone through a support session. The overlap is remote desktop access; the services are not interchangeable in every setup.

What Raspberry Pi Connect offers
Raspberry Pi says Connect requires Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later. It is included by default in the Desktop and Full editions. On Raspberry Pi OS Lite, Connect Lite provides remote shell access without screen sharing. Connect also supports remote updates. See Raspberry Pi Connect documentation for current device and feature requirements.
Set up a Raspberry Pi
- Install Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later on a supported device. Desktop and Full include Connect; Lite offers Connect Lite for remote shell.
- Link the device to a Raspberry Pi Connect account.
- Open the Connect site in a browser, select the device, and choose an available remote method.
For a headless first setup, Raspberry Pi’s setup guide describes using Raspberry Pi Imager to configure the operating system, networking, remote access, and credentials. Most Pi models typically boot from a microSD card, though other compatible storage options are possible; remote access does not require buying a card if the device is already set up or uses another compatible drive.

What Chrome Remote Desktop offers
Google documents two distinct workflows: unattended access to a configured computer and temporary remote support using an access code. The official guide explains Linux host installation using a 64-bit Debian package, but that instruction alone does not establish compatibility with every Raspberry Pi model, architecture, or Raspberry Pi OS image. Do not assume universal Pi compatibility from the Linux instructions.
Set up unattended access
- Configure the computer as a host through remotedesktop.google.com/access.
- When connecting, select the computer and enter its PIN.
Start a support session
- The person providing help opens remotedesktop.google.com/support.
- The person sharing access supplies the temporary access code required for the session.
Google’s instructions also note that internet connectivity is required and identify outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 (STUN) as traffic that may need to be allowed through a network firewall. If a connection fails on a managed or restricted network, those requirements are useful starting points for troubleshooting. See Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop help for the full setup and network guidance.

Privacy and security disclosures
Raspberry Pi publishes a comparatively detailed technical description. It says screen-sharing and remote-shell traffic is encrypted using DTLS between the Pi and browser. For each connection, the device creates a fresh public/private key pair; the private key remains in memory and is discarded after the session. The browser and device derive session encryption keys directly, so Raspberry Pi says its servers cannot derive those keys.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The encrypted session channel carries screen frames, input, clipboard, shell traffic, and credentials, while the API handles connection setup and device state. Traffic is generally peer-to-peer; if a direct link cannot be made, encrypted traffic may pass through TURN relay servers. Raspberry Pi says WebRTC connection setup information, which can include device and browser IP addresses, is retained for at most one minute. Its documentation says organization audit logs cover 90 days, while personal accounts have no connection log. These are distinct retention categories, not a single retention period. Details are in the Connect security and privacy documentation.

Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop Help says, “For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” It also says Google collects and stores anonymized information about network delays and session duration to improve the service. The cited help page does not provide an equivalent account of session-key handling or metadata retention, so its shorter disclosure is not enough to conclude that one service is categorically more private than the other. Read Google’s official help page for its statements and links to its broader privacy policy.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Raspberry Pi Connect if the device you need to reach runs a supported Raspberry Pi OS release and you want the integrated screen-sharing, shell, or remote-update workflow.
- Consider Chrome Remote Desktop if you need Google’s documented unattended access or temporary support workflow and can install a supported host on the target computer.
- For a security-sensitive environment, compare each service’s published data handling with your organization’s account, device, and software policies. Raspberry Pi’s public documentation is more detailed on session routing and retention; that difference in disclosure does not by itself establish a privacy winner.
Cost and administration
Raspberry Pi’s product page lists individual Connect use as free and Connect for Organisations at $0.50 per device per month, with fleet-management features. The price is the listing accessed October 7, 2026, and may change; check the current Connect product page before relying on it. The cited Google product and help pages do not state a Chrome Remote Desktop price. Raspberry Pi’s organization plan is the only one of these cited materials that specifies fleet controls.
