You can play Doom on a digital camera, but there is no universal camera version. The best-documented current route is Doom550D, a Magic Lantern module for the Canon EOS 550D (also sold as the Rebel T2i and Kiss X4) running Canon firmware 1.0.9 with a matching Magic Lantern build. A separate CHDK port targets the Canon PowerShot SD1000, also known as the IXUS 70, on firmware 1.02a. Each setup is specific to its camera and software; installing Magic Lantern or CHDK alone does not make a camera compatible.
Start by checking your exact camera and firmware
Before downloading anything, identify the camera model and firmware version. Then use a Doom port built for that exact combination. The Doom550D project says: “Do not install this binary on another camera or firmware version.” That warning comes from the project documentation, not Canon. Doom550D project documentation

For the 550D route, the documented target is Canon firmware 1.0.9, plus a compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 core and the matching 550D_109.sym symbol file. Doom550D is experimental, and its release binary is not intended for other camera models or firmware versions. Keep the module, autoexec.bin, and symbol file from compatible builds together: a module built against different exported symbols may fail to load.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe instructions below describe the Doom550D project’s documented setup. If your camera is not the exact target, do not try this binary as a substitute for a port built for your device.

Install Doom550D on a Canon EOS 550D
- Back up the SD card. Confirm that Magic Lantern already works normally on the camera before adding the game module.
- Check the Magic Lantern files. Make sure
autoexec.binand550D_109.symcome from a compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 build. - Copy the Doom module. Put the release module at
ML/MODULES/doom.moon the card. - Add game data. Create
ML/DOOM/if it does not exist, and put a legally obtained, compatible Doom IWAD in it. - Select and launch the game. Choose the WAD from Magic Lantern’s Games menu. Restart the camera after changing the selected WAD, then start the game.
The module does not include Doom, Freedoom, or other WAD data. The project lists doom1.wad (shareware), doom.wad (Doom / The Ultimate Doom), doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, freedoom1.wad, freedoom2.wad, and freedm.wad as supported Doom-family IWAD filenames. Check the game-data license and source before copying files to the camera. Doom550D project documentation
PWAD and mod selection is not implemented. Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Doom 64, PK3 files, and source-port-specific IWADs are unsupported. Hacx 1.2 is recognized by filename but is not playable in the current module because its required embedded compatibility-patch handling is absent.

- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Use the 550D’s physical controls
| Camera control | Doom action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move forward or backward and turn |
| Hold zoom in (+) | Run |
| Hold zoom out (-) and press left or right | Strafe |
| SET | Fire; confirm in menus |
| PLAY | Use doors and switches |
| Rear wheel | Choose the previous or next weapon |
| DISP (called INFO internally by Magic Lantern) | Open the automap; go back in menus |
| MENU | Open or close the Doom menu |
The port leaves ISO, depth-of-field, and shutter buttons unused because Canon may handle them below the module’s input layer. Pressing them can trigger camera overlays, autofocus, or take controls away from the game.
What a camera Doom port has to get right
A Doom engine is only one part of a working camera port. The software also has to bridge the engine and the camera’s hardware and firmware.

- Execution and memory: The camera needs a way to load the program and enough usable memory for the engine and game state. The build must match the camera’s processor and firmware environment.
- Display: The port must render to the camera’s screen buffer and account for its palette and layout. Doom550D documents assumptions about the camera bitmap, pitch, VRAM, and palette, and calls out display and palette restoration.
- Input: Camera button events must map to movement, turning, firing, menus, and key release behavior. A control that appears available may be intercepted by the camera before the module receives it.
- Storage: The port must locate the IWAD and handle configuration and saved games reliably. Doom550D keeps WADs, settings, and saves in separate directories and documents save-compatibility checks.
- Audio: If sound is supported, the port needs to use the camera’s audio output and fit the platform’s timing. Doom550D uses camera audio output and an AdLib-like software synthesizer, not cycle-accurate OPL2 emulation.
- Safe exit: The game should restore display, input, and audio state when it exits. Repeated launches and error handling matter too; a game that starts once is not necessarily a complete or reliable camera port.
Other documented camera routes
| Route | Documented target and setup | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Doom550D with Magic Lantern | Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i / Kiss X4; Canon firmware 1.0.9 with a compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 core and 550D_109.sym. Uses a module on the SD card. |
Experimental and specific to this model and firmware. Requires a separate compatible IWAD. No numeric performance benchmark is stated. Doom550D project documentation |
| sd1000-doom with CHDK | Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70 on firmware 1.02a, CHDK 1.6 for that target, and a bootable SD card no larger than 2 GB formatted in-camera. Uses a standard shareware DOOM1.WAD; launch in playback mode through CHDK’s Games menu. |
Camera-specific setup; the port has no sound. Its developer reported a camera test on 2026-06-27 and describes playability qualitatively, not with a measured frame rate. sd1000-doom project documentation |
DigitaOS DOOMD.CAM |
Historical route documented for compatible late-1990s Kodak and other DigitaOS cameras. | The README excludes the Kodak DC220 for insufficient RAM and says the Kodak DC290 needs firmware 1.0.4 or later. The documentation does not establish that downloads or setup are readily available today. DigitaOS DOOMD.CAM documentation |
The SD1000 port shows why a processor family alone does not make camera binaries interchangeable. Its developer describes loading a 481 KB flat binary into an idle 8 MB raw image buffer during playback, compiling for ARMv5TE, and adapting the palette and button map. The project says other CHDK-supported DIGIC III cameras may be adaptable, but their addresses, buffer sizes, palettes, and keys need camera-specific work. Those implementation details apply to that port, not to Doom550D or every camera.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect from performance and sound
The project materials do not provide a named, independently published frame-rate benchmark for either the 550D or SD1000 route. Doom550D calls version 0.4.1 “the best playable build tested so far”; that is the developer’s qualitative status description, not a measured performance result. The SD1000 project likewise calls its game playable and snappy without publishing a frame-rate figure.

Sound differs by port: Doom550D has camera audio output with its software synthesizer, while the SD1000 port has no sound. Do not infer that a port is fully functional from a successful boot alone; controls, saving, sound, and return to normal camera operation are separate parts of the implementation.
Quick Recap
Before you try a camera port
- Match the camera model and firmware to the port’s stated target.
- Check that the required Magic Lantern or CHDK build is for that same target.
- Back up the card before changing its contents, and follow the project’s card and boot requirements exactly.
- Obtain compatible game data separately; the Doom550D module does not bundle the game.
- Read the port’s notes on controls, saves, audio, and exit behavior rather than assuming every feature works because the game launches.
- Do not copy a binary from one camera or firmware version to another based only on a shared brand or processor family.
