A Raspberry Pi 5 playing YouTube on a locally connected screen costs electricity plus its hardware purchase; a cloud VM costs compute, storage, and possibly network transfer—and does not automatically replace the local screen.
Compare the recurring bills separately from purchase cost. For the Pi, measure the complete setup at the wall. For a VM, price the actual architecture and workload. The provider prices below are reference points, not equivalent all-in quotes.

First define what “a 24/7 YouTube video loop” means
A Pi attached to a display and playing YouTube in a browser is not the same system as a VM that stores or serves a video, or a remote desktop rendered in the cloud and streamed to a local screen. Decide which outcome you need before comparing prices:
- Local playback: the Pi and display are physically at the viewing location. A VM alone cannot show its desktop on that display; you would need a way to deliver the output to a local client.
- Hosted media or control: the VM may store or serve a video, or control playback elsewhere. Storage, transfer, and the playback device still matter.
- Remote desktop output: the cloud machine renders a desktop that must reach a local screen over a network. This adds an output path and makes the VM’s workload and data transfer relevant.
These architectures have different costs. The available provider rates do not establish which VM can handle a particular playback or remote-output setup.

What a fair monthly comparison includes
Use the same uptime assumption for both options. For a simple estimate, take 24 hours per day for 30 days, or 720 hours. Use the same currency and tax treatment, and keep one-time purchases distinct from recurring charges.

How to calculate the Pi’s electricity cost
Measure the complete setup at the wall while it plays at the resolution and in the browser or player you intend to use, with its normal network connection, peripherals, and display. A screen can contribute more to total energy use than the board, so a board-only figure is not the loop’s power bill.

- Run the actual playback setup under representative conditions and measure its power in kilowatts at the wall.
- Multiply that reading by the uptime hours. For the stated 30-day example, use 720 hours.
- Multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by your local electricity price per kWh.
- Show the board and setup purchase separately. If you want a monthly ownership comparison, divide the purchase cost by an explicitly chosen number of months and label it as an amortized estimate.
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply for Pi 5 and reports 800mA typical bare-board active current; actual draw depends on peripherals. That current figure is not a measured YouTube-playback wattage. Raspberry Pi’s roughly 12W figure describes peak power under particularly intensive workloads, not a 24/7 video-loop average. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 announcement and hardware documentation provide capability and power context, but neither establishes the complete setup’s playback consumption.

Cloud prices are tied to provider, region, instance, and use. These published examples give a starting point for estimating compute, not a complete bill or proof that a plan suits your output architecture.

For a 720-hour month, multiplying an hourly compute rate by 720 gives only a simple compute estimate, not a complete cloud total. Confirm billing details for the selected region and plan, then add persistent storage and expected data transfer. A monthly bundle price likewise does not settle whether the instance can handle your actual workload.
Raspberry Pi 5 purchase price and capability context
Raspberry Pi announced Pi 5 on September 28, 2023, with a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, VideoCore VII GPU, dual 4Kp60 HDMI output, 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Its announcement listed launch prices of $60 for the 4GB variant and $80 for the 8GB variant, before local taxes. These are dated launch prices, not current street prices. Check current local listings and what a starter kit actually includes; Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C supply, which may need to be purchased separately.

The specifications establish hardware capabilities, not a guaranteed result for a particular YouTube stream, browser, or peripheral combination. The official H.264 playback table in Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation covers older Pi models, so it should not be treated as a Pi 5 YouTube playback measurement.
Which option costs less?
The available figures cannot support a universal winner. The Pi’s bill depends on measured whole-system power, local electricity prices, setup cost, and any amortization period. The VM’s bill depends on the selected instance and region, storage, transfer, and how cloud output reaches a viewer. A screen and a remote-output path can change the comparison substantially.

To make a decision, calculate each option with your own inputs: wall-measured Pi power and local kWh price on one side; a current provider estimate for the chosen VM, region, storage, and transfer on the other. Keep initial hardware/setup spending visible rather than hiding it inside the monthly operating bill.
