A study published in Communications Materials on 7 October 2026 reports a rare-earth-free regenerator blend that increased cooling capacity at 4.2 K by approximately 40% versus CuFe1−xAlxO2 (CFAO) alone. The blend combines MnNb2−xTaxO6 (MNTO) with CFAO and reached approximately 0.163 W at 4.2 K in a two-stage Gifford–McMahon cryocooler test.
What the 2026 demonstration achieved
The reported regenerator contains no rare-earth elements. Instead, it pairs two magnetic oxides whose heat-capacity peaks occur at different temperatures. The authors, led by Noriki Terada, say this complementary behavior raised the combined material’s cooling capacity at 4.2 K by approximately 40% compared with CFAO alone.

This is a regenerator-material advance, not a new refrigerant. In a Gifford–McMahon (GM) cryocooler, solid particles absorb and release heat as gas oscillates through the regenerator. A material that stores more heat over the relevant temperature span allows the cold head to remove more heat each cycle.

MNTO supplies the cold-end heat capacity
MnNb2−xTaxO6 has a large specific-heat peak near 4 K. Placing it at the cold end gives the regenerator substantial heat-storage capacity where a 4.2 K cryocooler needs it most.

CFAO covers a warmer part of the cycle
CuFe1−xAlxO2 contributes a complementary peak at a higher temperature range. Using CFAO together with MNTO broadens the useful heat-capacity profile instead of relying on one narrow peak. Numerical simulations in the paper attribute the improvement to these intrinsic material contributions, rather than to a modeling artifact alone.
The tested particle arrangement
The technical account of the experiment describes a segmented regenerator: MNTO particles at the cold end, CFAO in the intermediate section and lead particles toward the warm end. The two-stage GM cryocooler operated at approximately 1.2 Hz during the reported measurements.

Reported cooling capacities at 4.2 K
The following values come from an AZoM technical report describing the 2026 study. They are capacities for the reported comparison configurations, not guaranteed ratings for every cryocooler design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Material or configuration | Capacity at 4.2 K | Context |
|---|---|---|
| MNTO plus CFAO hybrid | Approximately 0.163 W | Best hybrid configuration reported in the test |
| CFAO with lead (CFAO/Pb) | 0.117 W | Comparison configuration in the technical report |
| HoCu2 | 0.220 W | Benchmark configuration in the reported comparison |
The hybrid’s approximately 0.163 W is about 39% above the 0.117 W CFAO/Pb value when the rounded figures are compared. The paper’s headline result is approximately 40% versus CFAO alone; CFAO/Pb is a specific comparison configuration and should not be treated as an identical baseline in every respect.

How close is it to HoCu2?
HoCu2 remains the stronger benchmark in the cited test: 0.220 W at 4.2 K versus approximately 0.163 W for the best hybrid. Dividing the rounded values gives roughly 74%, consistent with the authors’ statement that the rare-earth-free material exceeded 70% of HoCu2 performance.
That comparison concerns cooling capacity under the reported GM test conditions. It does not establish that the oxide blend matches HoCu2 in particle packing, pressure drop, mechanical robustness, thermal cycling or lifetime.

Why removing rare-earth material matters
Many 4 K regenerators use heavy rare-earth compounds, including HoCu2. The authors present the oxide blend as a response to dependence on both scarce helium and heavy rare-earth elements. Reliable 4 K cooling is important in systems such as MRI scanners, quantum-computing hardware and superconducting magnets, where replacing or reducing constrained materials could simplify long-term supply planning.
The result builds on earlier work from Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), which identified CFAO as an oxide made from abundant elements and showed that it could reach approximately 4 K without liquid helium. The new blend keeps CFAO’s rare-earth-free baseline while adding MNTO’s low-temperature heat-capacity peak.

What the experiment does—and does not—prove
What was demonstrated
- A two-stage GM cryocooler operated with a segmented, particle-based regenerator.
- Combining MNTO and CFAO increased the measured 4.2 K capacity by approximately 40% relative to CFAO alone in the authors’ comparison.
- The best reported hybrid configuration produced approximately 0.163 W at 4.2 K.
What remains unestablished
- No commercial regenerator cartridge, retrofit kit or consumer cryocooler is identified.
- The sources do not report a retail price, production scale, licensing arrangement or supplier.
- Long-duration field operation and lifetime under repeated thermal cycling have not been demonstrated in the cited material.
- Performance in a commercial MRI system, quantum computer or other installed platform remains to be shown.
- Particle-size optimization, packing density, pressure-loss behavior and manufacturing consistency will matter before system builders can assess a practical replacement.
How to interpret the paper’s publication status
The Nature-hosted article is identified as an accepted-paper version that was shared before final editing and is expected to be replaced by a Version of Record. The numerical results therefore represent a recent laboratory demonstration, while wording, presentation or minor details may change in the finalized publication.
Bottom line
The MNTO–CFAO blend is a credible rare-earth-free route to higher 4 K regenerator capacity: it improves on CFAO alone and reaches more than 70% of the HoCu2 benchmark in the reported test. It is not yet a purchasable replacement or a validated drop-in upgrade for deployed cryocoolers; scale-up, durability and system-level integration still require evidence.
