They are not universal, and finding a tool for a named family does not guarantee that it will work on every version or victim’s files. If you are responding to an incident, identify the ransomware first, check trusted sources for a matching tool, preserve evidence, and consider restoring from tested backups on clean systems.
What a ransomware decryptor can do
A decryptor is software designed to reverse encryption for a particular ransomware family or supported case. Its stated coverage matters: a tool for one family does not necessarily work on another, and even a family match is not proof that the tool supports the exact variant, key, or files involved.

The No More Ransom decryption-tools catalog lists tools for named families, including CERBER V1, CrySIS, and CryptoMix. Check the specific tool’s coverage and instructions before using it. A catalog listing is a useful lead, not a promise of complete recovery.
How to identify the ransomware and check for a tool
Do not rely on a file extension alone to identify a strain. Use multiple clues, such as the ransom demand and encrypted-file samples, and seek qualified help if you cannot identify it confidently.

- Preserve relevant evidence. Avoid deleting ransom notes, logs, or other incident artifacts. For organizations, CISA advises preserving system images, memory captures, and relevant logs where appropriate.
- Use Crypto Sheriff. The No More Ransom Crypto Sheriff accepts encrypted-file samples and information from the ransom demand to help identify ransomware and check for available tools. Submit only material you are authorized to share.
- Check the tool’s stated scope. If a tool is listed, read its instructions and confirm that its supported family or case matches the identification evidence before proceeding.
- If no tool is listed, do not treat that as a final answer. The available catalog may change; no listing does not prove that a decryptor will never become available.
Europol describes Crypto Sheriff as comparing submitted information with available decryption tools. No More Ransom’s ransomware Q&A also explains why paying criminals is not a dependable way to obtain a key.
What decryptors cannot promise
- Universal support: A tool for one family or case is not a general-purpose way to break ransomware encryption.
- Complete recovery: Even a relevant tool may not support the victim’s exact variant, key, or files.
- A guaranteed success rate: The official pages cited here do not publish a current, authoritative success rate for decryption tools.
- Recovery of stolen data: CISA explains that ransomware incidents can include both encryption and data exfiltration. Decrypting files does not retrieve data that attackers copied or resolve the response needed for a possible breach.
Decryptor or backup restoration?
These are different recovery routes. A decryptor may restore supported encrypted files; a backup can restore data from a separate copy, subject to how current and intact that copy is. Neither option, by itself, addresses every part of an incident.

- The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
- Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
- Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
- No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
- Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
| Recovery route | What it may do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Decryptor | Recover files covered by the tool’s supported ransomware family or case. | Confirm identification evidence, tool coverage, and instructions. A family match does not guarantee recovery. |
| Backup restoration | Restore backed-up data or systems to a clean environment. | Verify that the backup is intact, sufficiently current, and tested; restore in a way that avoids reinfection. |
Practical recovery steps
For organizations responding to an incident
- Follow your incident-response procedures and preserve relevant evidence where appropriate.
- Consult federal law enforcement about possible decryptors. CISA notes that security researchers may discover flaws in some ransomware variants and release tools.
- Set recovery priorities and restore from offline, encrypted backups on clean systems, taking care not to reinfect them.
- Bring in qualified incident responders when the scope exceeds your team’s ability to handle safely, especially if data theft may have occurred.
See CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide, dated September 2023, and its guide resource page, revised October 19, 2023, for incident-response and recovery guidance.
For backup preparation and restoration
CISA recommends keeping backups offline, encrypting them, and regularly testing their availability and integrity. Physically separate storage, such as a hard drive or other removable storage device, can serve as one possible backup location; cloud options are also discussed in CISA’s guidance. A storage device does not decrypt files already encrypted in an incident. Keep backup copies appropriately isolated from routine access, and test restoration before an emergency.

Does paying the ransom guarantee recovery?
No. The FBI says, “The FBI does not support paying a ransom to the adversary,” and warns that payment does not guarantee access to data; some victims have paid without receiving decryption keys. Treat payment as an unreliable recovery method, not a substitute for incident response or tested backups. The FBI statement appears in its ransomware fact sheet.
