Before sharing a wildlife photo, check both the image file and the post: remove GPS data from a copy, leave out geotags and identifying details, inspect the frame for clues, and delay or skip the post if attention could disturb the animal. No single privacy setting covers every route by which a location can be disclosed.
Why a wildlife photo can reveal more than its caption
A digital image may carry date, time, and GPS coordinates in its metadata. EXIF is a common format for this information, so a photo can disclose where it was taken even when the post has no map pin. The Nature Conservancy explains the metadata risk and EXIF/IPTC editing in its 2019 guidance on using social media without harming nature.

Location can also come from the post itself: a platform geotag, a place name in the caption, or details visible in the image. A distinctive landmark, nearby sign, or building may help identify a site. Treat those visual clues as an editorial check, not as a risk that has been measured for every species or location.
Disclosure can attract unwanted attention even when poaching is not the concern. The Government of Alberta warns that geotagging can contribute to overcrowding sensitive habitats and disturbing wildlife, especially during breeding and nesting seasons. How to share a photo more safely
1. Prevent location from being recorded when practical
If your phone or camera lets you disable location recording for photos, consider doing so before photographing sensitive wildlife. This avoids embedding coordinates in the first place. Settings and menu paths vary by device and software, so check your device’s current instructions rather than relying on a universal path. Audubon describes prevention at capture as one way to withhold location in its responsible bird photography guidance.
2. Clean a copy of the image before uploading
Keep your original privately, then inspect the copy you intend to share. If it contains GPS or other location fields, remove them with a photo-management or editing workflow and export a cleaned copy. The Nature Conservancy names Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, and Aperture as examples of software that can edit EXIF/IPTC data; those are examples from a 2019 article, not a statement about current product features or recommendations.

After exporting, check the final file’s metadata again if your workflow allows it. Removing metadata from one copy does not change the original, and software behavior can vary. Audubon also notes that some sharing apps may strip sensitive details, but do not assume a platform removes all metadata on every upload path.
3. Check the post as well as the file
Do not add a map pin or precise place name to the post. Avoid caption details that identify a nest, den, roost, or sensitive habitat. Before publishing, inspect the final image for recognizable landmarks, signs, and buildings, and check the post’s own location setting. These checks are separate: omitting a social geotag does not remove GPS data embedded in the image.

4. Decide whether to delay or withhold the post
If a sighting could draw crowds or disturb wildlife, wait until sharing is less likely to affect the animal—or do not post it. This deserves particular care during breeding or nesting periods and when young are present. Audubon recommends considering a delay when a post could attract disruptive attention; iNaturalist’s community guidelines advise obscuring or delaying exact locations for sensitive species and say not to post locations of animals with young. Neither source establishes one delay period that is safe for every species and circumstance.

Using iNaturalist geoprivacy for a sensitive observation
iNaturalist offers open, obscured, and private location settings. Its Help page says obscured mode shows a randomly chosen point inside a 0.2 × 0.2 degree rectangle containing the true location. The page describes that rectangle as about 500 square kilometres at the equator. This is a platform-specific description, not a fixed-radius guarantee or a universal measure of how private a location is. An observer can see the true coordinates while logged in.

In private mode, coordinates are not publicly shown. These settings govern the observation’s location display on iNaturalist; they do not guarantee that a downloaded or separately shared image has had its embedded metadata removed. Check the image file independently before sharing it elsewhere.

When someone asks for the exact location
Do not put sensitive coordinates in a public comment or note. If a trusted researcher or conservation project has a clear reason to need the data, consider sharing it through a private message or a project you trust with hidden coordinates. iNaturalist outlines these options and urges caution in its guidance on requests for hidden locations. You are not obliged to share exact coordinates.
A final check before publishing
- Does the shared file still contain GPS or other location metadata?
- Does the post add a geotag, precise place name, or identifying caption detail?
- Could visible landmarks or nearby signs point to the site?
- Could publishing now disturb wildlife, particularly during breeding or nesting, or when young are present?
- If this is an iNaturalist observation, is open, obscured, or private geoprivacy appropriate—and have you checked the separate image file?
Social services may handle metadata differently depending on the service and upload path. Verify the actual exported file and post rather than assuming a platform strips every location field.
