RaiDrive vs. Mountain Duck: Which WebDAV Client Is Right for Windows?

Both clients mount WebDAV storage in Windows. RaiDrive offers a free starting point; Mountain Duck documents selective offline access and background synchronization.

For a straightforward Windows WebDAV drive, start by checking whether RaiDrive’s free Standard tier supports your server and the access you need. Choose Mountain Duck if its documented selective offline files, local cache, and background uploads better fit your workflow—or if you need one of its additional protocols, such as SMB. Neither is a universal winner: the server’s WebDAV implementation, required features, and licensing all matter.

What both clients do in Windows

Both RaiDrive and Mountain Duck can mount WebDAV storage for access through Windows File Explorer. RaiDrive also connects to a range of cloud services; Mountain Duck mounts server and cloud storage, and its Windows Version 5 offers Integrated Connect using the Cloud Files API. A mounted drive is a way to access remote storage, not a guarantee that files will perform like files on a local disk.

The key difference for many users is how they want to work with files. RaiDrive describes opening, editing, and saving cloud files, with features varying by plan. Mountain Duck documents more explicit controls for caching files and choosing which items to keep offline.

Which one fits your workflow?

Need RaiDrive Mountain Duck
Map WebDAV in File Explorer Supports WebDAV and many cloud connections as drives. Supports mounting WebDAV and other server or cloud storage.
Choose files to keep offline Plan features vary; the reviewed product information does not establish the same selective offline controls documented by Mountain Duck. Smart Synchronization lets you select items to keep offline and caches opened files.
Use additional protocols Lists WebDAV, SFTP, FTP, and cloud services; write access to some services depends on plan or add-ons. Lists WebDAV, FTP/TLS, SFTP, SMB, object storage, and major cloud services.
Try a free option Standard is listed as free, with a limit of eight drives; features and service access vary by plan. Version 5 is sold per seat. A stable checkout price is not stated in the reviewed purchase information.
Use a license across computers Check current plan terms for your needs. One user may use a seat license on that user’s multiple computers; a license applies to one major version.

Choose RaiDrive for a simple WebDAV mapping or a free starting point

RaiDrive is a sensible first option if you mainly want a Windows drive mapping, want to try a free tier, or need a connection to a service in its catalog. Confirm that the specific service supports the read or write access you need on the plan you select; a broad service list does not mean every service is writable on every plan.

#1 Best Overall

Choose Mountain Duck for documented offline and cache controls

Mountain Duck is a better fit to evaluate if you need to designate selected files for offline access, cache opened files, and have changes upload in the background after connectivity returns. It may also suit you if you need a listed protocol such as SMB. Confirm that your particular server or service is supported and that the Windows connection mode meets your requirements.

How Mountain Duck handles offline files and changes

Mountain Duck’s Smart Synchronization distinguishes online-only files from locally cached files and items marked to stay offline. In connect mode, opened files are copied to a local cache; changes are cached first and uploaded in the background when a connection is available again. This helps when you need access to selected files without a live connection, but it does not mean remote changes appear instantly or make the cache a backup. The vendor’s documentation describes sync errors and conflicts, so users working offline should allow time for reconnection and resolve any reported issues.

What you need before connecting a WebDAV server

A client cannot mount a server whose WebDAV service is disabled or misconfigured. RaiDrive’s WebDAV guide names Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR, and Nextcloud as examples and recommends enabling WebDAV on the server first. You will generally need the server hostname or IP address, port, and a user account unless anonymous access is enabled. Use HTTPS where the server supports it.

Nextcloud address pattern

RaiDrive’s guide gives this Nextcloud URL pattern: https://<host>/remote.php/dav/files/<username>/. Replace the placeholders with the host name and account name for your installation. A subfolder can also be specified as the mounted drive’s root.

RaiDrive connection settings

The guide describes HTTPS as the default and provides settings for TLS version, timeout, read-only access, and an alternate server address for fallback. If a connection fails, check that WebDAV is enabled, the address and port are correct, TLS settings match the server, and any external firewall or port forwarding allows the connection.

Server behavior can matter more than the client

WebDAV behavior and performance depend on the server implementation. RaiDrive warns that NAS WebDAV is typically slower than SFTP and that performance and file-handling behavior vary by server. It also notes that preserving original modification dates when copying differs among server brands. These are not universal speed results; if your NAS supports SFTP and your use case allows it, compare that option on your own setup.

Slow directory listings or failed large transfers may reflect server limits rather than a client preference. RaiDrive’s troubleshooting notes include server request-size limits, TLS mismatches, incorrect ports, disabled WebDAV, and external network configuration among possible causes. Check the server’s own documentation and limits before attributing a problem to either client.

How to decide

  1. Confirm the server and protocol. Check that WebDAV is enabled, note the correct HTTPS URL and port, and verify that the client supports your specific service.
  2. Decide whether you need offline files. If you want explicit selective offline storage and cache-backed background uploads, evaluate Mountain Duck’s Smart Synchronization behavior against your needs.
  3. Check the required access level. Confirm whether you need read-only or write access, and verify the selected client’s plan or service entitlement supports it.
  4. Compare current licensing terms. RaiDrive’s free tier has stated limits and paid-plan conditions; Mountain Duck’s seat covers one user’s multiple computers, with major versions licensed separately.
  5. Troubleshoot the server before switching clients. Verify its WebDAV configuration, TLS compatibility, network access, and transfer limits; client choice cannot fix a server-side restriction.
