To digitize DVDs, use a computer with a DVD drive to make a video file from each disc, choose whether to preserve the video stream or re-encode it to save space, then organize the files and test them on the devices you actually use. The practical choices are remuxing with MakeMKV or transcoding accessible video with HandBrake. Copy-protection rules and copyright laws vary, so first confirm that you have the right to make a copy where you live.
What you need before you start
- A computer with an optical DVD drive. If your computer has no built-in drive, use a compatible USB external DVD drive that reads DVDs. Check the connection and disc-format support before buying; a Blu-ray drive is unnecessary for a DVD-only collection.
- Enough storage for your chosen workflow. Remuxed files retain the source video stream and generally use more space than smaller transcoded files. There is no reliable universal file size per DVD: extras, tracks, and encoding choices affect the result. Process a small trial batch and use its actual size to estimate your library.
- Software suited to the task. MakeMKV can remux accessible disc content into MKV. HandBrake can transcode accessible video into common file formats and reduce file size.
- A playback plan. Decide whether you will watch files on a computer, TV, tablet, or through a media library such as Plex. Compatibility depends on more than the file extension.
Choose between remuxing and transcoding
Remuxing places the disc’s existing media streams in a different container without re-encoding the video. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes video, which can reduce file size or target a device, but takes processing time and can affect quality depending on settings. Plex’s guide to disk-image conversion describes the storage trade-off between these approaches; MakeMKV documents its handling of video and audio in its FAQ.

Step 1: Make a remux or transcode from an accessible disc
Option A: Remux with MakeMKV
- Insert the DVD into the computer’s optical drive and open MakeMKV.
- Select the disc and the titles, audio tracks, and subtitle tracks you want to keep.
- Choose an output location with enough free space and create the MKV file.
- Play the resulting file before moving on to the next disc. Check the picture, audio, and subtitle tracks you intend to use.
This keeps the source video stream rather than encoding it again. It cannot make an old DVD higher-resolution. MakeMKV notes in its FAQ that it does not change or compress video and audio except for some audio options.

- Open an accessible video source in HandBrake and choose a device-appropriate preset.
- Select an output format, such as MP4 or MKV, and set picture options such as cropping or resizing only if needed.
- Choose the audio and subtitle tracks to retain. Confirm that the chosen tracks and formats are supported by your playback devices.
- Encode one sample and inspect its picture, sound, subtitles, playback compatibility, and file size before deciding whether to process more discs with those settings.
HandBrake’s About HandBrake documentation describes its conversion features and makes clear that video is converted rather than passed through unchanged. HandBrake also says it does not defeat or circumvent DRM and does not work with DRM-protected video. It is an encoder for sources it can access, not a universal way to copy protected commercial DVDs.

Step 2: Organize the files for easy browsing
Use a consistent folder and filename scheme that identifies each film or episode. For example, keep films in individual, clearly named folders; group episodes by series and season. If you care about the original disc edition or track choices, record the disc label, edition, language, and retained audio or subtitle tracks in a simple inventory. These are practical organization choices, not a required naming standard.
Keep the files in a normal media format rather than relying on a disc image for a server library. Plex’s guidance says it does not support DVD ISO or IMG images, or VIDEO_TS folder structures, as library videos. Its disk-image format explanation describes the limitation.

Step 3: Test playback on the device you will use
A file that plays on the computer may not play directly on a TV, tablet, or media player. The container, video and audio formats, and selected subtitle streams all affect compatibility. Plex explains that unsupported media may require server-side transcoding or may fail to play directly in its Direct Play and Direct Stream guide.
- Test a sample file on the least capable device you plan to use.
- Check the audio track and subtitles you expect to watch, not just whether the picture appears.
- If direct playback fails or triggers unwanted server transcoding, try a more compatible transcode and test it again before converting the collection.
- For local playback, a media player such as VLC can open files; for a personal catalog, Plex can organize and play media you have the right to provide.
Plan storage and backups
Estimate storage from a trial batch made with the settings and tracks you plan to keep. Remuxing favors source-stream retention and simpler processing; transcoding can reduce file size but requires computing time and a quality-versus-size choice. Keeping extra audio, subtitle, and bonus-content tracks also changes how much space the library needs.

An external hard drive or NAS can hold the working media library. If preservation matters, keep a separate second copy on another drive or backup target: the drive or server holding the library is not itself a backup, and no single drive is failure-proof.

Owning a DVD does not establish a universal right to bypass copy protection or make a digital copy. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. HandBrake advises users to copy only material they own or have the right to copy, and says it does not circumvent DRM. VideoLAN’s documentation notes that use and distribution of libdvdcss raises legal concerns in some countries, including the United States under the DMCA.
