Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your racing wheel is missing or unresponsive in a Steam game, check it in three layers: confirm it powers on and connects, verify that its manufacturer software and Windows recognize it, then check whether the specific game supports the wheel and has its controls bound. A wheel’s absence from Steam’s controller list alone does not prove it is faulty, and there is no single Steam setting that fixes every wheel and game.
1. Check the wheel’s power and startup
Before changing Steam settings, see whether the wheel powers on and performs its expected startup calibration. If it does not, check the power supply and model-specific setup first. For the T248, Thrustmaster says incomplete or absent calibration can be related to power; its guidance suggests trying another outlet, USB port, or cable and, if possible, another platform. Thrustmaster’s T248 instructions cover this model specifically.

2. Check the mode and USB connection
Connect the wheel directly to the computer while troubleshooting. Try another USB port, and temporarily unplug other unnecessary USB devices to see whether the behavior changes. Steam’s general USB guidance says port-dependent behavior or intermittent disconnections can point to USB contention; reconnect devices one at a time if disconnecting them helps isolate the cause. Testing on another computer, if available, can also help distinguish a computer-specific issue. Steam’s USB troubleshooting guide is general advice, not wheel-specific.

For a Thrustmaster T300
Set the T300’s platform switch to PC when connecting it to a PC. Thrustmaster recommends trying another USB port, including a rear port on a desktop if available, and avoiding USB hubs or extension cables during diagnosis. Follow the instructions for your exact wheel model; do not assume another model uses the same switch or setup. See Thrustmaster’s T300 support page.

3. Confirm the computer recognizes the wheel
Logitech G923, G29, and G920
Open Logitech G HUB and check whether it detects the wheel and receives input. Then use Windows’ native controller module to check whether the wheel appears and responds there. Logitech’s troubleshooting guide for the G923, G29, and G920 says its former Steam troubleshooting step is no longer applicable because Steam no longer detects wheels. That statement is scoped to the models and troubleshooting context in Logitech’s guide; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every wheel or platform.
Thrustmaster wheels
Check the driver and firmware instructions for your exact model. Thrustmaster’s T248 guidance calls for the latest available PC driver; its T300 documentation notes that firmware may be needed for optimal operation in a compatible PC game. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support page rather than installing a driver intended for a similar-looking wheel: T248 support and T300 support.

4. Check whether the game supports the wheel and bind its controls
If the manufacturer utility or Windows detects the wheel but one game does not, the problem may be that game’s support or configuration rather than the USB connection. Check the game publisher’s supported-device information for your exact model or input standard. In the game’s controls or options menu, assign the steering axis, pedals, and buttons manually, then test each input.
Thrustmaster recommends manually mapping the T248’s buttons and axes in PC game settings, while warning that it cannot guarantee its wheels will work with every PC game. Its T300 guidance likewise says compatibility depends on the devices the game publisher chose to support. Those qualifications apply to the respective Thrustmaster support articles, not to every wheel manufacturer. See the T248 article and the T300 article.

Some games publish their own wheel troubleshooting steps, such as temporarily disconnecting other controllers or using a game-specific diagnostics log. Follow those only for the game that documents them; they are not universal Steam instructions.

If the wheel fails to power on, remains undetected by its manufacturer utility and Windows after connection checks, or does not respond on another computer, consult the manufacturer’s support process for that model. A wheel that works in Windows but not in one game calls for a game compatibility and binding check before assuming hardware failure.

Do not begin by editing the Windows registry. Logitech presents registry work as an advanced step for calibration problems or a blank Windows Controller Properties test page, after checking connection and input through G HUB and Windows. If that situation applies, follow Logitech’s model-specific instructions carefully rather than making registry changes based on generic advice.
