They protect against different financial shocks: you may need one, both or neither, depending on who relies on your income, your essential costs, existing workplace benefits and the policy terms. This guide is UK-focused; it is general information, not a personal recommendation.
What is life insurance?
Life insurance pays a benefit if the insured person dies during the cover period. Some policies also include a payment following a terminal-illness diagnosis, but only if the policy’s definition and other conditions are met. The benefit is often a lump sum, though some policies pay an income instead.

The payment may go to a named beneficiary, a surviving joint policyholder or the estate, depending on the policy and how it has been arranged. Check the beneficiary and trust arrangements rather than assuming who will receive the money.

Life cover is most directly relevant when someone else would face financial hardship after your death—for example, dependent children or a partner who relies on your earnings. It may also help with a mortgage, other debts or funeral costs. If you have cover through work, check the amount and terms of any death-in-service benefit before deciding how much additional cover to consider.

What is income protection insurance?
Income protection is designed to pay the insured policyholder a regular benefit if illness or injury prevents them from working, as defined by the policy. It can help with living costs such as rent or mortgage payments and household bills while earnings are interrupted. It does not pay simply because income falls for any reason: eligibility depends on the policy’s incapacity definition and claim conditions.
MoneyHelper says income protection policies typically replace 50%–65% of income. That is not a guaranteed percentage: the benefit depends on the particular contract and how the insurer assesses income. Do not assume it will replace your full salary.

Benefits usually start only after a deferred period, the waiting time between a valid claim and the beginning of payments. MoneyHelper describes common periods of four, 13 or 26 weeks, and one year. A longer wait generally lowers the monthly premium, but means you need another way to meet costs for longer before benefits begin. The policy also sets when payments end; do not assume they continue until retirement.

| Question | Life insurance | Income protection |
|---|---|---|
| What event triggers a benefit? | The insured person’s death; some policies may also cover terminal illness under specified terms. | Illness or injury that prevents work under the policy’s definition of incapacity. |
| Who receives the benefit? | A beneficiary, surviving joint policyholder or the estate, depending on the arrangement. | The insured policyholder. |
| How is it paid? | Often as a lump sum; some policies pay regular income. | As regular payments, usually replacing part of income. |
| What financial problem does it address? | Financial support for dependants or other obligations after the insured person dies. | Living costs when the policyholder cannot earn because of illness or injury. |
| What terms deserve close comparison? | Benefit amount and type, cover term, single-life or joint arrangement, exclusions, and beneficiary or trust arrangements. | Benefit amount, deferred period, incapacity definition, policy term or benefit end point, exclusions, premium basis, and how income is assessed. |
Neither product automatically does the other’s job. Life insurance is not a substitute for income protection if you are alive but unable to work; income protection is not a death benefit for your dependants.
How to know what kind of protection insurance you need
Start with the financial shock you are trying to manage, then account for benefits and resources you already have. Work through these questions:
- Who would be affected if you died? Consider whether children, a partner or anyone else depends on your income, and whether they would need money for housing, debts or day-to-day costs.
- What happens if your earnings stop while you are alive? Add up essential monthly costs and consider how long savings or another household income could cover them if illness or injury prevented you from working.
- What cover is already in place? Check workplace death-in-service cover, employer sick pay and any existing income-protection or other relevant insurance. Read the eligibility and payment terms, not just the benefit name.
- What gap remains? Compare the support already available with the needs you identified. Include debts, savings, household income and the period before any insurance benefit could start.
- Can the policy terms meet that need? Check the exclusions, definitions, benefit amounts and payment periods in the actual policy wording before relying on a product description.
Someone without dependants may have less reason to prioritise life cover, but debts, funeral costs or other obligations can still matter. They may nevertheless want to consider income protection if losing earnings would make essential bills difficult to pay. Conversely, someone with dependants may want to assess both risks: their family’s finances after their death and their own costs if they cannot work while alive.
MoneyHelper gives saving three months of living expenses as a general goal, while noting that needs vary. Treat it as a planning prompt, not a required threshold or a substitute for checking what your workplace benefits and policy would actually pay.

For life insurance
- Amount and form of cover: Check whether the proposed lump sum or income would address the obligations you identified.
- Term: Confirm how long cover lasts and whether that matches the period when others may rely on you or a debt remains outstanding.
- Single or joint cover: Check whose life is insured and what happens to the policy after a claim.
- Exclusions and arrangements: Read exclusions and confirm who is set to receive the benefit, including any trust arrangements.
For income protection
- Benefit level and income assessment: Check how the insurer calculates eligible income and the benefit payable. The stated cover may not equal your take-home pay.
- Deferred period: Match the waiting time to sick pay, savings and other resources that could cover costs before payments start.
- Incapacity definition: Understand the policy’s test for being unable to work and how it applies to your occupation and circumstances.
- Payment duration and end point: Check how long benefits can be paid and the conditions that stop them.
- Exclusions and premium basis: Review what is excluded and whether the premium can change under the policy terms.
For either product, eligibility and premiums can depend on factors including age, health, smoking, occupation, cover level and policy duration. Answer insurer questions accurately; compare equivalent cover and review the contract rather than choosing on price alone.

What does income protection cost, and what does the FCA say?
In its January 2026 consumer research report, the Financial Conduct Authority reported that 66% of surveyed income-protection holders viewed their policy as essential if they had to cut spending. The report also gave a £40 median monthly premium for income protection. These are survey findings, not a population-wide measure, a current quote or a prediction of what an individual will pay. Personal circumstances and policy choices affect premiums.
The FCA published its final pure protection market study on 21 September 2026. Its summary says competition generally delivers good outcomes for existing policyholders and sets out action intended to close the protection gap. That market-level finding cannot establish whether a particular policy is suitable for you.
When should you get help comparing cover?
Policies can use different definitions, exclusions and methods for calculating benefits, so comparison is not just a matter of matching headline amounts. A specialist adviser or broker may help when your needs or existing arrangements are complex. MoneyHelper notes that advisers may charge a fee or receive commission. If you use one, check their authorisation and understand how they are paid.
