Quick Share is a sensible default when both people have compatible devices and can see each other. It is not a universal one because the other person may be on an unsupported device, Windows needs an app, discovery settings can get in the way, and Apple compatibility is limited to selected Android phones. Google says transfers happen in seconds, but that is promotional language—not a measured guarantee for every file, device, or connection.
What Quick Share does—and where it works
Quick Share is built into Android for sending files and other content to nearby devices. Google supports sharing across Android, ChromeOS and Windows. On Windows, you need Google’s Quick Share app; it supports 64-bit Windows 10 and later, while ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store; Google’s Windows client is no longer supported on Samsung PCs. Google’s Quick Share instructions cover the Windows workflow.

To send from Windows, select files or folders in the app, choose a nearby Android recipient, and wait for them to accept. Android users can start from the system share menu or Quick Settings. A transfer between your own devices signed into the same Google Account is automatically accepted; other recipients generally have to accept or decline. Google’s Android Help page explains the sending and receiving steps.

It works best when both people are already in a compatible setup
Android-to-Android sharing is the simplest case because Quick Share is already integrated. Windows adds an app installation, while Samsung PCs need Samsung’s separate client. A recipient also has to be discoverable. Those extra steps matter when someone just wants to send a file to whichever phone or computer is nearby.

Crossing from Android to Apple is still conditional
Direct Quick Share-to-AirDrop sharing is available only on selected Android devices, not every Android phone. Google’s current device-level guidance lists Pixel 8a or later and certain models from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion and Motorola. Exact model and software support matter, so check the current list rather than assuming a brand-wide rollout. For a direct transfer, the Apple recipient must set AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 minutes” and accept the prompt. Google announced an expansion to additional manufacturers on May 12, 2026, but an announcement about a rollout does not establish that every announced model or region has support today. Google’s rollout announcement describes that expansion.
QR sharing broadens reach, but changes the route
When direct Quick Share/AirDrop support is unavailable, a sender can generate a QR code for the recipient to scan and download the files over the web. Google says this route uses end-to-end encryption, uploads files to Google servers rather than the sender’s Drive storage, keeps them available for 24 hours, and requires internet access on both devices. It is a useful fallback, but it is not the same as a nearby transfer that stays on the local device-to-device path. Google’s Android Help page describes QR sharing.

Setup and discovery: what to check when a device does not appear
For Android-to-Windows sharing, Google says both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet enabled. The Windows device should be within 5 metres (16 feet), according to Google’s product guidance. Some Windows devices without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Extended Advertising may not be discoverable on certain networks. If a transfer fails, Google’s troubleshooting advice is to bring devices within 30 centimetres (1 foot)—a troubleshooting step, not a replacement for the ordinary proximity guidance. Windows setup and requirements and Android troubleshooting steps explain the conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check that Bluetooth is on and that both devices are on Wi-Fi or Ethernet as required for the Windows workflow.
- Move the devices closer; try within 30 centimetres if discovery is failing.
- Toggle airplane mode, make sure another share is not already in progress, and restart if needed.
- On Android 12 or earlier, check that location is enabled.
- On Windows, check notification settings and Focus Assist if the receive prompt does not appear.
The practical issue is often discovery rather than the act of selecting a file: if the recipient’s device is not visible, there is nothing to accept yet.

Privacy, consent and visibility controls
Android lets users limit who can discover their device: “Your devices,” “Contacts,” or “Everyone for 10 minutes.” The temporary Everyone setting reverts to the previous visibility choice when the window ends. A recipient can accept or decline incoming transfers. Google says Windows Quick Share transfers are protected by end-to-end encryption and that users control who can discover their device. Google’s Quick Share guidance documents the visibility and Windows protections.
QR sharing has a different privacy trade-off from a direct nearby exchange: the files are temporarily hosted on Google servers, though Google says they are end-to-end encrypted and not stored in the sender’s Drive. The 24-hour availability window and internet requirement apply to that QR route, not to every Quick Share transfer. Google’s QR-sharing guidance explains the distinction.

Is Quick Share faster than AirDrop, email or cloud links?
Google’s Android explainer says Quick Share is faster than email or cloud storage and says transfers happen in seconds. It also says there are no content-size or file-number limits, subject to app limitations. Those are Google’s claims, not results from a controlled comparison: the explainer does not give measured transfer times, test file sizes, device and network conditions, or a repeatable comparison with AirDrop or cloud links. So Quick Share may be the fastest and least cumbersome choice for a compatible nearby pair, but no general speed winner is established by those claims. Google’s Quick Share explainer presents the promotional speed claim.

Quick Share, AirDrop and cloud links compared
| Option | Compatibility and setup | Discovery and consent | Internet or cloud handling | Speed evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Share | Built into Android; ChromeOS and Windows supported. Windows requires an app, and Samsung PCs need Samsung’s client. Direct AirDrop interoperability is limited to selected Android models. | Visibility can be restricted; recipients generally accept or decline. Same-Google-Account transfers between your own devices auto-accept. | Nearby sharing is proximity-based; the QR fallback requires internet and temporary Google-server hosting. | Google says “in seconds,” but supplies no controlled measurements in the cited explainer. |
| AirDrop | Apple-device route; Android interoperability is available only for selected Android devices with compatible software. | For the direct Android-to-Apple route, the Apple recipient sets AirDrop to “Everyone for 10 minutes” and accepts. | The cited Android guidance describes a direct nearby route; no broader claim about AirDrop’s internet requirements is established here. | No controlled comparison with Quick Share is established by the cited sources. |
| Cloud or link sharing | Can reach people outside a nearby-device ecosystem, depending on the service and recipient access. | Recipient uses a link or service-specific access method; the cited sources do not establish one universal consent flow. | Quick Share’s QR fallback specifically uses internet and encrypted temporary hosting on Google servers for 24 hours. | No measured speed comparison with Quick Share or AirDrop is established by the cited sources. |
The table reflects only the workflows and evidence documented in the linked Google sources; it is not a benchmark of transfer speed or reliability.

So, should you make it your default?
For Android users who regularly share with other Android devices, Quick Share is a strong default: it is built in, starts from familiar system controls, and supports recipient approval and visibility limits. It is also useful for Windows when the app and discovery requirements are already in place. It is less dependable as a universal habit for mixed-device groups because support, installation, visibility and network conditions vary. For an iPhone recipient, first verify direct support on the specific Android model; otherwise QR sharing can bridge the gap, with its internet and temporary-hosting steps.
In short, the feature is not held back by a lack of usefulness so much as by the uneven reality of sharing across ecosystems. Google’s May 2026 announcement framed that pain point through a family video being sent to people with different phones; the broader compatibility and setup constraints explain why a convenient feature has not become everyone’s default. Google’s announcement includes that framing.
