QuestLHSync vs. Space Calibrator: Which Lighthouse Calibration Method Should You Use?

QuestLHSync uses headset cameras and requires SteamVR 2.0 base stations; Space Calibrator offers paired-device calibration and a tracker-based continuous mode. Choose by compatibility and workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on your hardware and workflow, not an assumed accuracy advantage. QuestLHSync uses a Quest headset’s cameras to observe SteamVR 2.0 base-station flashes; Space Calibrator’s standard method aligns a controller and tracker that you hold together, and it also offers a continuous mode using a tracker mounted on the headset. If you have SteamVR 2.0 stations and a supported Quest model, QuestLHSync may suit you. If your headset and Lighthouse devices match Space Calibrator’s listed combinations—or you want its headset-mounted-tracker mode—consider Space Calibrator.

Check compatibility before choosing

The first decision is whether the method fits your existing headset, base stations, SteamVR setup and network. The compatibility details below come from project documentation and a Steam product listing; they are not independent certification or per-device test reports.

Check QuestLHSync Space Calibrator
How calibration works Headset cameras observe SteamVR 2.0 base-station flashes; the project says alignment continues during play. Standard calibration pairs a device from each tracking system by holding them together and moving through orientations. Continuous mode uses a tracker attached to the headset.
Base stations SteamVR 2.0 required; 1.0 is unsupported. The Steam listing describes SteamVR-compatible use cases and does not specify the same 2.0-only requirement. Verify your exact hardware combination.
Headsets and devices The README lists Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S. It marks Quest Pro tested; Quest 3 and Quest 3S untried. It also documents an installation route for Steam Frame, which is not an independent performance test. The Steam listing names full-body trackers or Index controllers with Quest/Pico, and Vive Ultimate Trackers with SteamVR headsets. It does not provide per-model test results.
Additional hardware At least one Lighthouse device must be powered on. The documented method does not specify a tracker mounted on the headset as a requirement. Standard calibration uses a controller and tracker together. Continuous mode calls for a tracker attached to the headset.
Platform and network Windows with SteamVR; headset and PC must be on the same local network. The listing specifies Windows 10/11 and SteamVR-compatible devices.
Cost and distribution Distributed through a public source repository; the cited README does not state a price. Listed as free-to-play on Steam.

How the methods differ

QuestLHSync: camera observations of base-station flashes

QuestLHSync uses the Quest headset’s cameras to detect Lighthouse base-station flashes and align the coordinate systems. That makes it distinct from Space Calibrator’s standard paired-device procedure: QuestLHSync does not describe its main method as requiring you to strap a tracker to the headset. The project says its correction continues while playing. See the QuestLHSync README for its stated requirements and setup guidance.

Space Calibrator: pair devices, or use a headset-mounted tracker

In upstream OpenVR-SpaceCalibrator’s standard workflow, you select a reference-space device and a target-space device, hold them together without letting them slip, then move and rotate them slowly through varied orientations. The software saves a profile and applies it as devices turn on. Its README recommends recalibrating after changes to the space; for wireless setups, it says slow or very slow modes can reduce initial error. These instructions are for the upstream project, and should not be assumed to match every fork’s interface or behavior. The Space Calibrator Steam listing also describes continuous calibration with a tracker mounted on the headset.

HTC Vive SteamVR Base Station 2.0 (Single) – Precision Room-Scale Tracking for PC VR, Black
  • Includes One base station and one power adapter per order
  • Fits standard threaded mounting points
  • Cord: 8' 2'' L
  • Compatible with Vive Pro, Vive Pro Eye, Vive Pro 2 and Vive Cosmos Elite headsets

Which one fits your setup?

  • Consider QuestLHSync if you have SteamVR 2.0 base stations, a headset and PC on the same local network, Windows with SteamVR, and a Quest model whose support status fits your tolerance for untried hardware. The project marks Quest Pro tested; it lists Quest 3 and 3S as untried.
  • Consider Space Calibrator if your device pairing matches its listed mixed-tracking use cases, or if you specifically want the continuous mode that uses a headset-mounted tracker. Confirm support for your exact devices rather than treating the listing as a model-by-model test.
  • Do not choose based on a claimed accuracy winner. The cited documentation does not establish a controlled head-to-head accuracy or stability result.

Set up the chosen method carefully

QuestLHSync

  1. Confirm that your base stations are SteamVR 2.0, not 1.0; have at least one Lighthouse device powered on; and connect the headset and Windows PC to the same local network.
  2. Turn off Space Calibrator, OpenVR-SpaceSync or any other software that adjusts Lighthouse-device poses. QuestLHSync explicitly warns that two tools correcting the same devices fight each other.
  3. During first acquisition, look around so the headset cameras can see both base stations. The README says initial acquisition takes about half a minute and suggests wearing a tracker or holding a controller while stations are first identified.
  4. If available, bring a third station into view. QuestLHSync says three visible stations let it level its reference frame with headset gravity; with two, its README says device accelerometers level the frame as the devices move. These are the project’s explanations, not independently measured performance results.

Space Calibrator

  1. Select a device from the reference tracking space and one from the target space.
  2. Hold the devices together so they cannot slip relative to one another.
  3. Move and rotate them slowly through varied orientations, following the controls and prompts in the version you installed.
  4. Save the calibration profile. The upstream README says the profile is applied as devices turn on; recalibrate if the room or tracking space changes.

For broader drift context, the upstream OpenVR-SpaceCalibrator README cautions that inside-out and Lighthouse tracking can drift after extensive movement around a room, and that wireless Quest use may require recalibration. Treat this as a stated caveat, not proof that either method always drifts or a quantified comparison of the two.

QuestLHSync’s local-network privacy detail

According to the QuestLHSync README, its headset-side service responds to requests from anyone on the local network without authentication. It sends bright-spot positions, camera calibration, headset serial number, model and firmware; the project says it does not send camera images. Consider whether that local-network exposure is acceptable in your setup.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The project README and Steam listing describe requirements, workflows and compatibility claims. They do not provide a controlled comparison showing that QuestLHSync or Space Calibrator is more accurate or stable overall. QuestLHSync’s listed Steam Frame installation route is not an independent Steam Frame performance test, and the Quest 3 and 3S entries are explicitly untried by the project.
