A Sportmicro basketball MCP server can give an AI client a controlled way to query player data, but it should return only what the upstream API actually documents. Before writing one, check Sportmicro’s existing MCP package: it may already provide the tools you need. A custom TypeScript server makes sense when you need a narrower tool surface, stricter input validation, or a particular response shape.
What this server does—and what it does not do
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI application access external tools and data through a standard interface. The protocol defines server capabilities such as tools, resources, and prompts, and uses JSON-RPC 2.0 for communication. MCP does not provide basketball statistics itself; Sportmicro remains the data source for this integration. MCP specification

The title-matched tutorial describes a focused TypeScript module that connects an MCP client to Sportmicro’s basketball data API. Its intended boundary is narrow: accept a defined query, validate it, request upstream data, and return documented fields without inventing unavailable statistics. Those implementation details are reported by the tutorial; the project repository and code were not independently inspected. Original tutorial

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the player endpoint before designing tools
Sportmicro’s basketball documentation, identified as version 1.0.0, lists a Players endpoint. The reviewed documentation landing page does not provide its complete response schema, so do not assume particular player fields, statistics, filters, or identifiers. Check the current endpoint-specific documentation and authentication requirements before implementing a call. Sportmicro basketball documentation
This contract check determines what the MCP server can safely expose. Only create a player lookup tool if the upstream endpoint supports the identifier or filter the tool will accept. Do not promise a field merely because it would be useful to an AI client; include it only when Sportmicro documents and returns it.

Choose a custom server or Sportmicro’s package
Sportmicro now documents a published npm package, @sportmicro/sportmicro-mcp-server. Its guide gives this launch command and requires the SPORTMICRO_API_KEY environment variable:
SPORTMICRO_API_KEY=your_api_key npx -y @sportmicro/sportmicro-mcp-server
The vendor documents tools for supported sports, endpoint discovery, generic calls to documented endpoints, live matches, standings, teams by league or season, players by team, and match details. It also lists prompts and documentation resources. Review that tool surface first; if it supports your use case, using the existing package may avoid maintaining a separate integration. | Approach | What it offers | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sportmicro’s published MCP package | Vendor-documented tools, prompts, and resources; launched with npx and configured with SPORTMICRO_API_KEY. |
You want to use the documented tool surface without building a separate server. |
| Custom TypeScript server | Control over tool names, accepted arguments, validation, and response shaping. The title-matched tutorial reports this approach; its repository was not independently inspected. | You need a deliberately limited interface or output tailored to a particular client. |
Design a narrow, honest tool interface
Start with the smallest query the upstream contract supports. Name the tool for the action it performs, and define arguments that correspond to documented request parameters. Validate those arguments before making an API call; the tutorial reports using Zod for validation, but the exact schema should come from the current endpoint documentation rather than being inferred.
- Keep the API as the factual source. Return values the endpoint supplies; do not fill gaps with guessed statistics or silently substitute another provider.
- Preserve context. Keep identifiers and any returned season or team context with a value so the client can explain what it describes.
- Distinguish outcomes. Treat an empty result, invalid input, unsupported field, missing credentials, and upstream API error as different cases. Do not convert an error into a plausible-looking empty player record.
- Make unsupported requests explicit. If the endpoint cannot answer a requested question, return a clear limitation instead of manufacturing an answer.
Exact player fields, request limits, authentication headers, and response schemas must be checked in the current endpoint-specific documentation; the reviewed basketball documentation landing page does not establish all of those details.

Build and run the TypeScript project
The tutorial reports dependencies on the MCP TypeScript SDK, Zod, TypeScript, and Node type definitions. It also reports scripts named npm run build, npm start, and npm test, with a compiled runtime entry point. These are details attributed to the tutorial, not independently verified project settings. Confirm the current package manifest and repository instructions before running commands.
- Inspect the repository and API contract. Confirm the actual scripts, runtime entry point, required environment variables, supported player query, and documented response fields.
- Install the project’s declared dependencies. Use the package manager and lockfile present in the repository; do not assume a package-manager command that the project does not specify.
- Build and test. If the checked-out manifest defines the reported scripts, run
npm run buildandnpm test. Resolve compiler or test failures before connecting the server to a client. - Start the server. If the manifest defines it, run
npm startwith the required API key configured in the environment. Use the transport and client configuration expected by the project. - Verify representative outcomes. Test a valid query, a query with invalid arguments, a no-result response, and an upstream or credential failure. Confirm that returned fields match the API response.
Protect the MCP transport and handle failures
For an MCP server using stdio, keep standard output reserved for protocol messages. The official server guide warns that writing logs to stdout corrupts JSON-RPC communication; send diagnostics to stderr instead. MCP server guide

Timeouts, credential checks, and upstream-error mapping are implementation choices to make for your integration; they are not established features of the title-matched tutorial. Whatever approach you choose, return failures distinctly and avoid exposing secrets in tool responses or logs.
When a custom server is worth maintaining
A custom implementation is most useful when the vendor package’s documented tools do not match the interface you need—for example, when you want to expose only a specific supported player query, constrain inputs more tightly, or shape responses for a particular client. If the existing package already covers the workflow, a custom server adds code and maintenance without an evidenced advantage in performance or data coverage.
