Nothing Phone (4b): Who Should Choose It Over the Phone (4a)?

The Nothing Phone (4b) is a battery-focused, design-led Android phone whose value depends on local pricing, regional specs, and whether you need optical zoom.

The Nothing Phone (4b) is the better fit if you want a distinctive, clean-feeling Android phone with strong battery life and can live without optical zoom. Its main camera is capable in daylight, but the Phone (4a) is the more versatile choice for photography, and the 4b’s tested display brightness fell short of its advertised peak. Whether the 4b is good value depends on its current price and configuration in your market.

What the Phone (4b) offers—and what it leaves out

Nothing positions the Phone (4b) as its affordable entry-level phone, not as a direct replacement for the Phone (4a). The trade-off is straightforward: it retains the brand’s distinctive styling and a useful everyday feature set, while cutting back on camera versatility and some display performance.

Specs and prices vary by market. Notebookcheck’s German review covered an 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage model with a 5,200 mAh battery and listed a €329 review price. BGR reported a 6,000 mAh battery in the Indian model. Those are regional review snapshots, not universal specifications or current prices.

Design and display: distinctive, but more restrained

The Phone (4b) keeps Nothing’s visual identity while toning it down compared with some earlier models. Its vertical Glyph Bar uses discrete LEDs for notifications, timers, and charging status. BGR found it could be useful when configured, and Tech Advisor also praised its distinct look and notification function; whether it helps depends on how you use notifications.

The 6.77-inch AMOLED panel supports a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Notebookcheck measured a peak brightness of 1,148 cd/m² in its test, below the advertised 2,000-nit peak. BGR likewise found the display difficult to read in direct sunlight. The measured result is a reviewer test, not a claim about every viewing condition, but outdoor visibility is a reasonable concern if you often use your phone in bright sun.

The body carries an IP64 rating. BGR describes this as dust-tight protection and protection from splashes; Notebookcheck also cautions against treating the phone as waterproof. Keep it away from submersion.

Everyday speed and battery life

The German model reviewed by Notebookcheck used a Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 processor, Adreno 810 graphics, and 8 GB of RAM. BGR found ordinary tasks—including messaging, browsing, streaming, and switching between apps—generally smooth. In demanding games, it reported frame drops and reduced visual quality. The phone makes more sense for everyday use than for sustained, graphics-heavy gaming.

Battery life is a stronger point, though capacity differs by region. BGR reported 5,200 mAh outside India and 6,000 mAh for the Indian model. Tech Advisor recorded more than 17 hours in its PCMark for Android test and said the phone lasted a day of solid use in its experience. BGR also reported a full day in its own use. The PCMark result is a test outcome, not a promise of a particular runtime or screen-on time for every owner.

The European and UK reviews list 33 W wired charging, and BGR says there is no wireless charging. In Tech Advisor’s test, an empty phone reached 42% after 30 minutes; that result depends on test conditions. Tech Advisor also said its review unit did not come with a power adapter in the box, so check local packaging rather than assuming contents are identical everywhere.

Camera quality: good reason to compare the Phone (4a)

The Phone (4b)’s rear cameras are a 50 MP main sensor with optical image stabilization and an 8 MP ultrawide. The front camera is 16 MP, according to BGR and Notebookcheck. There is no telephoto camera, so zoom beyond the main camera’s native view relies on digital cropping rather than a dedicated optical-zoom lens.

BGR found the main camera adequate in daylight but weaker in low light and at digital zoom. Tech Advisor also praised the main camera while criticizing the ultrawide. BGR says the phone records video at up to 4K and 30 frames per second. Taken together, the reviews point to a usable everyday camera, not a uniformly strong system across lenses and lighting conditions.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB | Gemini Live, durable design, 7 years of Pixel Drops, 30+ hour battery, Camera Coach, Call Screen, Car Crash Detection
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

If optical zoom or a more flexible camera setup matters to you, the Phone (4a) is the more relevant in-family comparison: BGR identifies its 50 MP periscope camera and 3.5× optical zoom. Compare the models at their actual local prices; a nominally lower price for the 4b may not be worthwhile if you regularly photograph distant subjects.

Software and update support

BGR reviewed the phone with Nothing OS 4.1 on Android 16 and described the interface as relatively clean, with optional Essential AI tools. BGR and Tech Advisor report a commitment of three major Android version updates and six years of security updates. Tech Advisor considered the OS-update period shorter than some competitors’ support. The reviewed sources do not establish a current official support end date, so check Nothing’s latest regional policy before using one to plan a purchase.

Price and availability: check your market first

Review prices are dated reference points, not current offers: Notebookcheck and BGR listed €329, while Tech Advisor reviewed the UK version at £299. BGR’s review, published August 21, 2026, reported the phone as an Indian and European-market product that was not then available in the United States. That does not establish its availability today; U.S. buyers should verify whether Nothing has since announced local sales before treating the phone as an option.

Notebookcheck’s review was based on a German 128 GB retail configuration, and Tech Advisor reported that 256 GB was exclusive to India for the UK model it reviewed. Before buying, confirm the storage, battery capacity, microSD support, price, and box contents for the exact regional variant you can obtain. Also check whether the Phone (4a) is cheaper locally, since Notebookcheck observed that outcome at some German retailers during its test.

Who should buy the Nothing Phone (4b)?

  • Consider it if you value Nothing’s design, a clean interface, dependable everyday performance, and battery life more than zoom photography or peak outdoor brightness.
  • Compare the Phone (4a) closely if optical zoom and camera flexibility matter, or if local pricing makes the 4a a better deal.
  • Look elsewhere or verify first if you need a phone for demanding games, dependable sunlight readability, microSD expansion, or a confirmed U.S. release.

The 4b’s appeal is not that it matches every more expensive model; it is that its everyday strengths may be enough at the right local price. Because the price and hardware configuration change by region, the useful decision is the one based on the specific model on sale where you live.
