Its author, Mike Demo, describes Sanity as the content backend behind the project’s screens, filters, searches, and visualizations. The design illustrates how reviewed, structured records can serve more than one interface—though the project’s reported figures and implementation are described by its author, not independently audited.
What QueerCade is
Mike Demo describes QueerCade as a retro, 8-bit pixel-art database for LGBTQ+ video games. Its stated aim is to help people discover games with LGBTQIA stories, themes, characters, and creators. The project submission describes curated collections—including cozy queer games, visual novels, and dating sims—and a personal-library feature for tracking games. In the submission, Demo reports 746 games, 930 companies, 79 platforms, and 22 genres in the catalog, along with four human-assembled collections. These are figures reported in the 2026 submission, not independently verified totals.
Three ways to explore one catalog
The arcade-style storefront
The familiar storefront organizes game records into browsable collections and supports searches and filters. The author says those screens draw data from Sanity using GROQ queries. Rather than maintaining separate content stores for each view, the project uses the same backend records to serve multiple discovery experiences.

The Queer Character Constellation
The constellation presents selected LGBTQ+ characters as an interactive star map. Users can pan and zoom, then change views to connect characters through identity categories, release decades, and narrative tropes. Selecting a character opens information, portraits, sources, and a link to the associated game.
Demo’s submission describes more than 870 characters; its summary gives the specific reported count as 874 character stars. Both numbers are the author’s figures from the 2026 submission, rather than an independently checked count. The interaction turns character attributes and game context into paths through a catalog: a visitor can follow a theme or time period instead of starting with a title in mind.

The Emoji Game Oracle
The recommender takes a different route. A user chooses three to five emojis representing mood, vibe, setting, and playstyle; an AI agent then returns a game match from the catalog with a retro-style explanation. The constellation offers links among characters and their contexts, while the Oracle returns one game recommendation from a user’s selected signals. The submission does not establish that either method is more accurate or useful than the other.
How Sanity and editorial review fit together
Demo characterizes Sanity as “the whole content backend,” saying screens, filters, searches, and graphs obtain their data from Sanity through GROQ, with no other content database. In the submission’s account, the project uses TanStack Start, React 19, and NES.css, while an HTML5 Canvas and seeded d3-force simulation turn character records into graph nodes and connect them across identity categories and time periods.

The described import and review workflow separates incoming game metadata from editorial decisions. The author says game metadata comes from the IGDB API, is normalized, and is written to Sanity through a server-side client. The client token is held in cloud secrets rather than the browser. Each sync creates an import record tracking created, updated, refreshed, and skipped items. Demo says field ownership rules let imported details such as ratings, covers, and release dates refresh without overwriting editorial data.
The project’s stated review path
- Imported: Game metadata enters the project through the described IGDB import pipeline.
- Under review: Editors assess records and add project-specific editorial information.
- Approved: The record passes the project’s stated approval stage.
- Featured: An approved record may receive the project’s featured status.
For character records, the submission says editors add character names, source URLs, identity tags, and narrative tropes. It also says editor notes, source records, and character arrays are isolated from the automated sync engine. That makes provenance and human review part of the described design, but the submission does not independently verify the controls or the accuracy of individual character interpretations.

- Expansive game engages both new and experienced players
What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
In addition to the catalog and character counts, Demo reports 1,754 tracked import operations and zero content databases besides Sanity. These figures describe the project as presented in the author’s 2026 submission. They are not an external audit of the database, import history, current availability, or user activity.

It does not provide independent evidence about data accuracy, user outcomes, uptime, or how QueerCade compares with other game databases. Its counts and workflow should therefore be read as the author’s account of the build, not as third-party validation.

Why the design is notable
QueerCade’s central technical idea is to treat character identities, narrative tropes, and release years as structured dimensions rather than details trapped in prose. Once those attributes are represented as records, the project can reuse them in a conventional catalog, a graph-like constellation, and a recommender interface. The editorial workflow matters to that idea: the value of multiple routes through a catalog depends not only on the interface, but on how records are curated and contextualized.
For readers, the result is a project that frames queer game discovery as more than searching for a genre or title. It offers a way to browse collections, follow character connections, or describe a desired mood through emojis. The submission documents the author’s design and implementation claims; it does not establish how often people use these routes or what outcomes they produce.
