It is not a physical tether between particles or a way to send messages faster than light. Entanglement matters both to fundamental physics and to research into quantum information technologies.
What is quantum entanglement?
In ordinary thinking, two objects have separate properties whether or not anyone looks at them. Quantum mechanics allows a different situation: two or more particles can share a joint state that cannot be fully described as a set of independent states for each particle. When measurements are made on the parts of that system, their results can be correlated in ways that reflect the shared state.

The key point is the relationship between the outcomes, not a hidden signal or a physical connection stretching through space. The Nobel Prize’s explanation describes entangled particles as behaving like a single unit even when separated. Nobel Prize popular-science explanation

How can particles be connected when they are far apart?
“Connected” is a shorthand for the fact that quantum theory describes the particles together and predicts correlations between measurements on them. It does not mean that one particle carries a complete private instruction sheet for every possible measurement, or that a material thread links the pair. The joint state is what the theory uses to predict the outcomes.

To see why this was a profound issue, consider measuring a property of each particle along a chosen direction. The individual outcomes are not a controllable message from one site to the other; the striking feature is that, when results from many trials are compared, the pattern of correlations can be stronger than local hidden-variable accounts allow.
What do Bell’s inequalities show?
John Stewart Bell developed inequalities in the 1960s that made the debate testable. They set limits on the correlations expected from a class of local hidden-variable explanations. Quantum mechanics predicts that certain entangled systems can exceed those limits, and experiments can check which pattern nature follows. A measured violation rules out the tested class of explanations under the experiment’s assumptions. It does not prove that every imaginable hidden-variable theory is impossible. Nor does it mean that quantum mechanics allows an observer to choose an outcome and use it to transmit a message instantaneously.

No. Entangled measurements can be correlated across distance, but correlation is not a controllable communication channel. A measurement gives a local result; the unusual pattern becomes apparent when the results from both sides are brought together and compared. The Nobel Prize’s account describes the correlations and their experimental study, not a means of sending a faster-than-light message. Nobel Prize popular-science explanation
How did scientists test entanglement?
The experimental story spans decades, from a testable inequality to increasingly refined photon experiments. The Nobel Prize awarded in 2022 recognized Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science.” Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 2022 Nobel Prize press release
- 1960s: Bell developed the inequality that allowed competing predictions about correlations to be tested.
- 1972: John F. Clauser and doctoral student Stuart Freedman reported an early photon result violating a Bell inequality.
- 1981–1982: Alain Aspect conducted experiments with entangled photons. A later experimental approach changed measurement settings after the photons had been emitted, addressing an important loophole.
- Subsequent work: Anton Zeilinger’s group refined photon experiments and explored applications of entanglement in quantum information.
- 2022: Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for this experimental work and its connection to quantum information science.
The sequence is not a single experiment repeated unchanged: the work developed through different experiments and refinements. The Nobel Prize’s popular account describes the early result, Aspect’s changing measurement settings and later photon experiments. Nobel Prize popular-science explanation

Why does entanglement matter for technology?
Entanglement is a resource studied in quantum information science. The 2022 Nobel Prize press release identifies quantum computers, quantum networks and secure quantum-encrypted communication as areas connected with this research. Those are active technology and research areas, not finished products that entanglement alone makes available. Turning the physics into useful systems requires more than creating an entangled pair.
Its significance therefore has two sides: experiments test a central feature of quantum mechanics, while researchers investigate how the same feature might support new ways to process, connect or protect information. The Nobel Prize recognized both the experimental demonstrations and pioneering work in quantum information science. Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 2022 Nobel Prize press release
