The Events Calendar’s knowledgebase describes a dedicated app route for check-in, together with permissions and a server-side dependency for QR generation. This is a useful contrast: it shows that some WordPress ticketing products do use an app, not that all of them do.

Secure camera access (HTTPS)
The Orange Cat listing states that the check-in page must be served over HTTPS, because browsers require a secure origin before they will grant camera access. If the site loads over plain HTTP, the camera will not open, and the staff member will see no scanning option.
- Symptom: the check-in page loads but the camera never starts or shows a permission error.
- Likely cause: the page is not on HTTPS, or the browser has blocked camera access for the site.
- Fix: confirm the site address begins with https://, then allow camera access for that site in the phone browser’s site settings and reload the page.
Staff access and permissions
A check-in page is only as safe as its login rules. Use the plugin’s own role or capability settings to give door staff the check-in permission and nothing more. Avoid using a site administrator account on the door phone. Confirm the exact role or capability name in the plugin’s documentation, since the products reviewed use different arrangements: a protected capability for Orange Cat, role-based controls for the WooCommerce extension, and a separate permissions model for The Events Calendar.

Offline check-in
A WordPress.org support thread from an earlier period asked: “Can we check-in QR codes when mobile is offline (not connected)?” That thread concerned a different plugin, and the reply stated that offline scanning was not available at that time. It cannot be carried over to other products or to current versions.

For Orange Cat QR Event Tickets, the listing advertises offline check-in with later synchronization. The listing does not state how conflicts are resolved if two door phones check in the same ticket while disconnected, or how long offline data is kept. For the WooCommerce extension, the reviewed documentation does not say. Treat any plugin’s offline claim as unverified until you have tested it on the exact version and phone you will use on the day.

When a QR code will not scan
Torn, dirty, or dim tickets will sometimes fail, and so will a phone whose camera is blocked. Plan a manual route before the doors open.
- Orange Cat: look up the attendee by buyer email or order number.
- WooCommerce extension: enter the ticket code by hand.
- Event Espresso: use manual attendee lookup in the app workflow.
Whichever route you use, confirm during testing that it marks the ticket as checked in, so that the same person cannot be admitted twice.
Ticket QR codes must generate first
The Events Calendar’s documentation warns that QR codes may fail to generate if PHP’s GD extension is missing or disabled. Check the server before event day, because the check-in page cannot scan a code that was never created. If you use a different plugin, ask its support whether it has a similar server requirement.
Rehearsal checklist before event day
- Choose a plugin whose documentation explicitly describes browser scanning, and record the version you install.
- Confirm the site loads over HTTPS and that the check-in page opens in the browser on the actual door phone.
- Place a test order, and confirm its QR ticket is generated and displays correctly.
- Create a staff account with only the check-in permission and log in with it on the door phone.
- Allow camera access in the phone browser and scan the test ticket. Confirm it is marked as checked in.
- Scan the same ticket again and confirm the plugin rejects the duplicate.
- Test the manual route: lookup by email or order number, or manual code entry, depending on the plugin.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data on the phone, repeat a check-in, and note whether it succeeds, fails, or syncs later.
- Keep a printed attendee list at the door as a last-resort backup.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- The feature statements come from plugin listings and product documentation, not from independent testing.
- No controlled comparison of scanning speed, reliability, or security was found, so no product is ranked on those measures.
- No subscription pricing, supported-device list, or independent security audit was established for these products.
- Offline behavior is product-specific and version-specific. The only offline support statement from a plugin support thread is historical and concerns a different product.
The app-free approach is a documented option for some WordPress ticketing plugins, and it needs no special hardware. An ordinary phone with a camera and a current browser is enough, provided the site is on HTTPS and the plugin’s offline and fallback behavior has been checked on the day’s conditions.
