A Qi charger sends energy through a changing magnetic field to a receiving coil in a phone or other device, while the charger and device communicate to manage the transfer. To check whether a particular charger is certified, look up its exact product listing in WPC’s database.
What “Qi” means
Qi is a shared wireless-charging standard, not a charger brand or a guarantee that every charger will deliver the same speed. It defines how a transmitter, usually in a charging pad or stand, transfers power to a receiver in a device. WPC says the standard launched in 2010 and reports more than 13,000 Qi-certified products on the market; the organization’s page does not date that product count.

How Qi wireless charging works
- The charger creates a magnetic field. Alternating current flows through a coil in the transmitter, creating a changing magnetic field.
- The device receives energy. The field induces voltage in a coil inside the phone or other receiving device. That voltage can power the device or charge its battery.
- The devices coordinate the transfer. The phone sends control signals to the charging station, including a signal to stop transmitting when the battery is full.
That is why Qi charging is more than placing two coils near each other: the system transfers energy and uses communication to manage it. WPC’s explanation of how Qi works describes the induction and control process.
Qi generations: alignment and power are not the same thing
Qi versions add capabilities, but a charger’s advertised maximum is not a promise of the speed a particular phone will achieve. The WPC’s public standards page highlights these milestones:

In a July 23, 2025 announcement, WPC said 14 devices completed Qi2 25W certification testing during a limited launch. The WPC specification-history page also records revisions through Qi 2.3, while its public standards page highlights Qi v2.2.1/Qi2 25W. Because those pages present different kinds of version information, check WPC’s live specifications page for the latest status rather than treating either milestone as a definitive statement of the current version. WPC says detailed latest specifications are member-only.
How to verify certification and compatibility
“Qi compatible” or “works with Qi” does not, by itself, establish that a product passed WPC certification testing. WPC says certified products undergo independent laboratory testing for safety, interoperability, and energy efficiency. It also cautions that a Qi logo can be printed illegally, so packaging alone is weaker evidence than a database listing.

- Find the exact product. Search the WPC Qi Certified Products database for the charger or receiving device.
- Check the Qi generation and power. Confirm which generation and maximum power the charger supports, then check what the device supports. The charger cannot make a phone accept a capability it lacks.
- Check magnetic alignment if you need it. Qi2’s magnetic attachment and alignment are relevant only when the intended device and accessories support them.
- Confirm the power-adapter requirement. Check what adapter the charger requires; the charging setup depends on more than the pad or stand alone.
WPC describes Qi-certified products as interoperable across manufacturers, but verifying the exact products and matching their supported capabilities is still the practical way to avoid assuming universal speed or features.
Choosing a Qi charger for your device
Start with the receiving phone or device, not the charger’s headline maximum. Choose a charger with verified certification, a Qi generation and power level your device can use, magnetic alignment if both sides support it, and a suitable power adapter. A Qi-certified pad or stand is the transmitter in this setup; a “Qi-compatible” claim should not be presented as certification unless the exact model appears in WPC’s database.
