How to Set a Video or Animated Scene as Your Windows 11 Background

Windows 11 has no built-in animated desktop wallpaper setting, but separate apps can add moving backgrounds. Here’s how to choose and set one up.

Windows 11 does not provide a built-in setting for animated desktop wallpapers. Its themes set desktop background pictures, while its motion effect applies to the lock screen. To put a video, animated scene, or webpage on the desktop, use a separate app such as Lively Wallpaper or Wallpaper Engine.

First, choose the kind of background you want

  • A desktop picture or rotating set of pictures: Windows themes and background settings cover still images, including changing pictures.
  • A subtly moving lock screen: Windows offers lock-screen options, including a motion effect. This does not animate the desktop.
  • An animated desktop: Use an app designed for live wallpapers. Depending on the app and wallpaper, this can mean animated artwork, video, or a webpage.

What Windows 11 can do without another app

Set a desktop theme or background

To choose a theme, open Settings > Personalization > Themes, select a theme, or browse themes in the Microsoft Store, then apply your choice. Themes customize desktop background pictures and related visual settings; they are not animated desktop wallpapers. See Microsoft’s theme guidance.

Set the lock screen separately

Windows lock-screen settings offer Spotlight, a picture, or a slideshow, and include a motion effect that makes the lock-screen image move slightly as the PC moves. These choices affect the lock screen, not the desktop background. See Microsoft’s lock-screen guidance.

Choose a live-wallpaper app

Lively Wallpaper and Wallpaper Engine are two options supported by the available product documentation. Neither is a universal best choice: consider the wallpaper formats you want, how you prefer to install the app, the app’s privacy information, and how it performs on your PC.

Option What the published information establishes What to check
Lively Wallpaper Its project documentation lists installer and Microsoft Store distributions. The Store version requires no additional setup; the installer handles additional dependencies during installation. The distributions use different storage locations. (Lively installation documentation) Choose the distribution you want, follow its current setup prompts, and check the project’s notes about storage and high contrast mode. The project notes that high contrast mode can prevent some features from working properly.
Wallpaper Engine Steam lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, along with minimum and recommended system requirements. (Steam Support requirements) Review the current listing and requirements before installing or purchasing. Windows N editions require Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack.

Install and set up the wallpaper

  1. Confirm the target: Decide whether you want an animated desktop or a lock-screen image. Windows’ built-in motion effect is for the lock screen.
  2. Select an app and distribution: For Lively, choose its Store version or installer and follow the current prompts. For Wallpaper Engine, review the current Steam listing and system requirements first.
  3. Check Windows edition requirements: If you use Windows N with Wallpaper Engine, install Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack as required by Steam’s documentation.
  4. Choose a wallpaper in the app: Select the kind you want—such as animation, video, or a webpage—where the app offers it, then apply it to the desktop using the app’s current controls.
  5. Try it on your PC: Observe how the chosen wallpaper behaves while you work and whether resource use is acceptable for your machine.

Check privacy and resource use

Use a trusted source and review privacy details

Microsoft cautions that desktop apps do not necessarily use Windows privacy permission prompts and may not appear on privacy-settings pages that manage app access. Read the app’s privacy policy, review its settings, and install desktop apps only from sources you trust. Microsoft’s advice is: “Install apps only from sources you trust.” See Microsoft’s desktop-app privacy guidance.

Performance depends on the wallpaper and computer

A light animation, a video, and a webpage can place different demands on a PC. A 2026 Windows Central writer’s observations on a workstation laptop with 32 GB of RAM illustrate that variation: the writer reported about 1% CPU and 255 MB RAM with other apps minimized for one Lively wallpaper, and about 4.5% CPU and 800 MB RAM when using a YouTube video as wallpaper. With a full-screen Edge window open, the writer reported 0–0.3% CPU and 245.5 MB memory for Lively. These are observations from one system, not a controlled benchmark or a prediction for your PC. See the Windows Central test.
